IMAGINE it is a terribly busy day, you are in Singapore, you have not slept well last night, and you have a bad headache. What would you reach for to put you out of this misery? Chances are, you’ll say “Panadol”.

“Branding is not about getting your prospects to choose you over your competition; it’s about getting your prospects to see you as the only solution to their problem,” says branding expert Rob Frankel. Your product has to be the solution to your niche customers. That means even if you are a car mechanic in a small town, you can be the “Panadol” for car owners living and working in the area, if you are good enough, and if you can market your brand well enough.

For decades, branding has been the domain of large corporations because of their relative ease to get on television and other media to blare out their brands. With limited media choices, consumers simply sit through all these advertising messages. Consumers can only recall the brand that has been advertised long and frequently enough, and that is what they’ll buy.

Not any more. We now have cable and satellite television, and more importantly, and the Internet to distract our attention. To create a strong brand in the Information Age, you need to know what are the components that make up a brand.

A good brand has three characteristics: visibility, positioning, and functionality. Without one of these, the brand will not work.

Visibility refers to the exposure rate the brand has on your target customers. Before the invention of cable, satellite, and the Internet, visibility can be easily achieved through television and print media advertisements. With more choices of media, visibility has somehow been eroded.

Brand visibility is a reason why some dot.coms failed to take off. If you are selling a consumer’s product, you can still place your products in a supermarket, a petrol kiosk or at bus stands. You can still create substantial visibility. In the online world, it’s either you log on, or log off.

To create visibility, many dot.coms turned to heavy advertising, which in turn burned up much of their capital until they went belly up eventually.

To complement the lack of visibility online, you can enhance your brand positioning. Positioning is the battle for the mind, according to marketing gurus, Al Ries and Jack Trout. It is a reflection of your products’ strengths and weaknesses in the customers’ minds. It is about how people perceive you to be, what you can do, and how you do it.

Like the Panadol example earlier, you may perceive that it cures headaches, is low-cost, and easily available. If it fails to work, you’ll simply perceive that you are very ill and need to see a doctor. Somehow, Panadol has achieved this kind of cult status in the minds of its customers even though it has few advertisements. It relies on good positioning.

According to Ries, brands are born with publicity, not advertising. With no advertising, The Body Shop has become a powerful global brand.

Brands are not confined to products. McDonald’s is a great brand, although not many people will admit it serves great food. It’s positioning is about being fast and clean. Its crew is always cheerful and says the exact same things from the time you enter the restaurant, to the time you receive your order.

There is also a functionality aspect to branding. Brands convey a certain message that describes their functionality. This is not to be confused with positioning. While both Chrysler and Mercedes Benz have the same functionality as car brands; they have very different brand positioning, even though they belong to the same company.

Once again, it is the perceived functionality of the brand that matters. Hush Puppy is a popular brand of shoes, but if they introduce Hush Puppy clothing, I don’t think they will achieve much success. Not many will warm up to the idea of wearing shoes on their bodies!

My guess is that Courts will be stronger with its furniture sales, but weaker in its electrical goods because its brand functionality is furniture. That means customers will shop at Courts when they want to buy furniture, and may perhaps add on a couple of electrical items before checking out.

The same principle applies to brand positioning as well. Courts is generally perceived as a low price, normal quality furniture retailer. When it ventures into upmarket furniture at Orchard Courts, it didn’t perform as well as it expected.

To get around the perception problem, NTUC Fair Price launched Liberty, an American-style supermarket that caters to people with more up-market taste. Even though Liberty sells NTUC’s house brand products as well, its brand position is more western, more upmarket and hip. The statue of Liberty is located in America’s fashion capital, New York. This is in contrast with Fair Price’s position as the favourite housewife’s haunt for fair-priced produce, and perhaps explains Liberty’s success in attracting expatriates to its supermarkets.

The plot thickens with the advent of the Internet, and every respectable company with a Web site. If you are the boss of XYZ Enterprises, and you have a Web site with the name XYZ.com, is it a brand, or just an online address?

According to Al Ries, the domain name is a brand. In addition, traditional companies should never use their company name or existing product name as their domain name because the public perception of a traditional company and that of an online one is very different. Online shoppers will never put traditional companies as their first-choice and vice versa for traditional shoppers. Ries disagrees with New Economy observers who believe brick and mortar companies can also sell online, and if such companies were to go online, they have to operate as a dot.com under a different name.

Rob Frankel suggests that a company should have as many domain names as possible and take on as many “personalities” as possible. Since brand visibility is weak online, why not create multiple domain names, each appealing to different groups of people?

The Internet has become so much a part of our lives that there will be no difference between online and offline shoppers. Consumers are expected to search items on the Internet, find the best product at the best price. Alternatively, they can shortlist a few vendors, go to the shops and inspect the products personally before buying.

E-brand

In this interpretation, the “E-brand” has lost its novelty, and the domain name is another channel of communication, distribution, and transaction. It is also the most cost-effective and efficient one as well. Hence, one-to-one marketing experts Peppers and Rogers suggest merchants offer multiple channels – physical shop front, telemarketing, catalogues, Web sites, online malls – so that the customer can choose whichever channel is the most convenient at the time of purchase.

Despite having poor brand visibility, the Internet offers the possibility of two-way communication. With one-way communication most companies have no idea on what goes through the minds of their audience. They gauge public perceptions by “guess-timation” at best.

Nowadays, you can get very accurate, and yet cost-effective feedback from your target audience through E-mail. Not only is E-mail a two-way communication channel, it also allows you to segment your markets right down to the last individual customer. You can be pro-active in engaging prospects and customers in explaining what your brand is all about and what functions will the brand fulfil. Subsequently, you can even achieve a pinpoint positioning of that brand to each individual customer.

Cost-effective Branding

The impact of the Information Age on brands is lower cost and higher accuracy in communicating the brand positioning and functionality. However, this does not mean that the playing field has been levelled.

Large companies still yield great influences over their markets because they have access to better customer data and have better resources to build efficient online communication channels with their audience. Small companies can also create strong brands to their niche clientele if they can convince its customers of its distinctive benefits over large companies.

Whether you succeed in building a strong brand in the Information Age will depend on your ability to identify unfulfilled gaps in the market and segment your target audience, and then increase your visibility levels through two-way communication and fine-tuning your brand positioning.

Since branding is a matter of managing perceptions and perceived values, the costs incurred should be seen as a secondary factor. The strongest brands will belong to companies that best communicate with customers and manage the clients’ perceptions.

Just what is midlife? Many people define midlife by chronological age – some say it starts at 35 and ends at 50; others say 40-60 and still others 45-65. But age alone does not accurately portray the definition of midlife.  Midlife – or Middle Adulthood – is a normal developmental life stage, and as with all stages of human development from infancy through old age, it can be defined by the developmental tasks that are associated with it rather than just chronological age.  

It’s funny…when you search online for a definition of midlife what you get are a lot of negative connotations associated with it; for example, you may immediately find the term midlife crisis thrown in there. Does there always have to be a crisis in midlife? I’ll examine this issue of “midlife crisis” later in the series. But a short answer to this question is “No” and I think we do this rich stage of life a disservice when we portray only the downside of it. 

Here is where focusing on the developmental tasks of midlife is really helpful; these tasks allow us to see the positive as well as the negative side of midlife. As a student of human development, I especially like to look at the work of Erik Erikson, a German psychologist/ psychotherapist whose work spanned many decades of the 20th century.  He divided life into eight stages that extended from birth to death. 

His theory was revolutionary as most developmental theories only covered childhood.  Psychological-Social (psychosocial) development continues throughout the life span and is not only specific to childhood.   

Each stage of life, Erikson theorized, has a crisis associated with it and the crisis would either result in a positive outcome or in a negative one.  

For example, the developmental crisis of Infancy is Trust vs. Mistrust. If an infant’s physical and emotional needs are met sufficiently, the infant successfully experiences the positive outcome of this crisis – the ability to trust others.   The infant becomes a securely attached toddler and enters the next developmental crisis of Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt having a solid foundation.

The negative outcome of this stage was sadly experienced on a significant scale in the 1990’s when the stories of the developmental deficits of Romanian adoptees hit the media. Most of these children were warehoused in orphanages and never received the nurturing and the interaction from their caretakers that all babies need in order for their brains to develop. The damage caused by never achieving trust in their caretakers and their environment was permanent and resulted in attachment, learning and behavioral problems to name just a few.  

Each developmental stage scaffolds on the previous one and one’s success in later stages really depends on how well the previous stage was navigated.  

Erikson delineated five distinct stages and crises of childhood: Infancy (Trust vs. Mistrust), Early Childhood (Trust vs. Mistrust), Preschool (Initiative vs. Guilt), School Age (Industry vs. Inferiority) and Adolescence (Identity vs. Role Confusion). He divided the stages of adulthood into Young Adulthood (Intimacy vs. Isolation), Middle Adulthood (Generativity vs. Stagnation) and Older Adulthood (Ego Integrity vs. Despair).  

I will get into more specifics about midlife in Part Two of this series but first let me lay the groundwork for the developmental tasks associated with the three stages of adult life. 

In Young Adulthood, the challenge or crisis is to find and create significant and meaningful relationships. It is the time of finding a spouse or life partner, creating a family and developing friendships. As a result of doing so, a person achieves intimacy, the positive outcome of this stage. If a person doesn’t develop these relationships, the negative outcome is isolation. 

In Middle Adulthood, the developmental task is to continue to work creatively and productively on the career and family one has created. During this time, we pass along values and norms to the next generation. Our focus begins to grow beyond the immediate focus of family and friends and extends out into our communities, the nation and the world. Meaningful work is very important in this stage of life. Those who successfully navigate these developmental tasks will achieve a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Erikson referred to the positive outcome as generativity – a sense that we are contributing to the world. The failure to successfully accomplish these tasks will result in the negative outcome of this developmental crisis which is self-absorption or stagnation. 

Older Adulthood is focused on reflecting back on life. If we can look back on our lives and appreciate our accomplishments and our contributions, feel a sense of satisfaction and few regrets, then we will achieve a positive outcome of this stage’s developmental crisis – what Erikson called ego integrity – a sense of wholeness and completeness. If we feel our lives have no meaning, or our lives have been wasted and therefore we have many regrets, we will experience the negative outcome of this developmental crisis which is despair. 

Midlife is a rich stage of life that has more to do with growth and possibilities rather than reaching a certain age and having a crisis. Part Two of this series will focus on the crossroads of midlife and successfully and satisfyingly navigating beyond them.

Although there have been many studies undertaken analysing the most commonly used words in the English language and producing lists ordering words by their supposed frequency, none of these lists can be truly definitive. This is because it would be impossible to analyse every example of English language in use today; although many written texts can easily be obtained, it is challenging to collect numerous and varied enough samples of spoken language.

The list below was created by analysing the Oxford English Corpus, the very large set of texts used by the makers of the Oxford English Dictionary and by the Oxford University Press’ language research programme to carry out hypothesis testing and statistical analysis. This specific text corpus contains more than two billion words, originating from a wide range of sources, from specialist journals and literary novels to everyday magazines and newspapers and the language used in weblogs, emails and chatrooms. The list is also representative of a study undertaken by Oxford Online, in association with the Oxford English Dictionary.

It is important to note that many of the words listed are lemmas; that is, they actually represent more than one word. For example, the item “be”, as the base form of a verb, also includes all the occurrences of “are”, “be”, “was” and “is”.

According to this study, therefore, the ten most common words in the English language are “the”, “be”, “to”, “of”, “and”, “a”, “in”, “that”, “have” and “I” respectively. Prepositions are particularly popular, with “for”, “on”, “with”, “at”, “by”, “from”, “up”, “out”, “into”, and “over” also appearing in the top one hundred most frequent words.

Conjunctions also appear regularly, with “as”, “but”, “or”, “also” and “because”, as well as “and” in the top one hundred. The other most frequent word class is pronouns, the most common examples of which, after “I”, are “it”, “he”, “you”, “this”, “his”, “they”, “we”, “her”, “she” and “my”, which is only number 34. Amazingly, the items in this list of the one hundred most commonly used English words make up fifty percent of all the words in the Oxford English Corpus.

The ten most commonly used nouns are “time”, “person”, “year”, “way”, “day”, “thing”, “man”, “world”, “life” and “hand” respectively, while the most frequent verbs are “be”, “have”, “do”, “eat”, “sleep”, “drink”, “put”, “keep”, “run” and “walk”. The ten adjectives used most frequently, according to this study, are “good”, “first”, “new”, “last”, “long”, “great”, “little”, “own”, “other” and “old”.

Interestingly, this list of the English language’s most commonly used words is not as readily subject to change as one may think. Although changes in society and culture and ever increasing globalisation are constantly shaping and changing our language and forcing our vocabulary and linguistic habits to evolve, most of the most frequently used words are those that are timeless or are functional words, such as pronouns, which have no need to be altered.

Indeed, although most of the words constituting today’s English language do not have Old English roots, but stem from other languages brought over by invaders throughout the history of the language’s development, nearly all of the one hundred most frequently used words do indeed come from Old English. While, for example, words such as “telegram” are ultimately bound to die out, the commonly used “year”, “world” and “life” are far from redundant.

For they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as an eagle; They shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Now, let’s define what a giant is. According to Websters on-line dictionary, a giant is defined as a person or thing of unusually great size, power or importance.

Your Giant. Is it…

Sexual abuse, physical abuse, bankruptcy, divorce, drugs, child abuse, alcohol, rape, molestation, homosexuality, adultery, depression, lying, stealing, low self-esteem, financial instability, prison, lack of education, lack of faith. Insert yours here ___________________________. Which one(s) is it?

For many of us, dealing with issues as the ones listed above is easier said than done. At times we may not realize we even have any giants, and at other times realize that we haven’t gotten over the giant we thought we had.

Has your giant kept you from living a life that is productive, peaceful, happy or on purpose? Has it kept you from enjoying the embraces of your husband or wife because of bad memories? Has it kept you from growing in the Word of God because of secret doubt?

I once wrote an article entitled Giant or Grasshopper: How do you see yourself? In it I mentioned that sometimes we tend to see ourselves through the eyes of limitations and fear. I want you to stop right here and ask yourself these question…How do I really see myself? Why have I allowed my giant to run amok over my heart; my mind, my finances, my marriage; my health; my life?

So why have you? Do you know that although you may see yourself as you are, God see’s you as you will become? How wonderful is that? Just think of yourself as a diamond in the rough. Sometimes it is so hard for us to believe that God really and truly loves us (me, you). But he does. He loved us so much that he gave his only begotten (of his spiritual loins) to be crucified for the sins of this world (read John 3:16).

In the book Facing Your Giants, by Max Lucado, he states, Focus on your giant(s) you stumble. Focus on God and your giant(s) tumble. You cannot fight your giant on your own. You need God to guide and assist you. The Holy Spirit to comfort you when you are feeling down. You need to learn how to transform your mind. Change your thought process and you will change how you view yourself and your situation. Start speaking life over yourself. Philippians 4:13 says, I can do all things through Christ with strengthens me. You have to believe. I cannot emphasize this enough! If you believe in your heart but doubt wants to creep into your mind gate (your mind is your battlefield), ask God to help your unbelief (read Mark 9:23-24)!

Maybe you are saying to yourself that this is all good and dandy. You have tried the belief ‘thing’ several times, but to no avail. The giant is still there. Here is a thought…Did you ASK God for help? Or did you try and do it on your own? The Holy Spirit is our comforter and “wants to be invited into our situations; otherwise, He would violate our free will.” Often times the Holy Spirit is there watching, waiting for us to ask him, to give it up to him. But we are to proud, even times stubborn, to do so. We are trying so hard, but getting nowhere. One of the many functions of the Holy Spirit (The Spirit of Grace) is to do what we cannot do by striving (fighting, or trying to accomplish) on our own power. When the Holy Spirit comes he’s coming with all power. Things must happen.

Maybe you did ask but saw no results. Did you wait? Were you patient? I once heard the First Lady of the church I fellowship at say, that she had waited almost 20 years for a particular situation to change. She kept believing and trusting, and now she is seeing the fruit of her belief. My first thought was ‘hallelujah! God is so great! Then, my second thought was Lord, 20 years?! You mean I may have to wait 20 years for you to change my husband?! And then a second thought flashed through my mind. ‘It could be 30 years. So be patient!’

The Holy Spirit may not be able to do the work he needs to do because although you have asked, you are still trying to help him. Believe me, He doesn’t need our help! So take your hand out of the pot and let him do his work!

Do you know that we tend to attract individuals who are like us? Don’t let your feelings dictate who you are. Let the Word of God replace every negative thought you may have of yourself. Again, speak life over yourself. I am somebody; God loves me; I am forgiven; God is my helper. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:21 that death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. So, if you want good fruit, produce good thoughts and good speech. Clean out your mind of all old, hurtful, painful and discouraging thoughts. Your mind is your battlefield. That’s where all your feelings are first formed, as a thought.

If God has forgiven you of your sins and cast them into the Sea of Forgetfulness, never to be remembered (of Him) anymore, why are you still holding on to them (read Micah 7:18-20)? Let it go! Your mind is your spiritual heart. Renew it daily and you will see how easier it gets on beating your giants.

Last but not least, if you are struggling with giants and do not know the Lord as your personal savior and want to know him. To lean on him and have personal relationship with him. You can do so, right here. Right now. How about praying this prayer, out LOUD:

“Father, I don’t know where to begin but You know all. So here I am. I want a new life, a new beginning. I am truly sorry. I want to turn away from my past; a sinful life. And move towards you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

Your Salvation – You’ve Prayed It; Now What?

If you’ve prayed this prayer of salvation with true conviction in your heart, you are now a follower of Jesus. This is a fact, whether or not you feel any different. Are you supposed to feel some special way? No, not really. If you meant it in your heart, you are now a follower of Jesus. The Bible tells us that your eternal salvation is secure! “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9) Now go find a church that will help you to grow in Christ. That will teach you the Word and not just preach it. Get a Bible and read it for yourself. Talk to God, everyday. Ask for your spiritual eyes and ears to open. Remember He loves you!

Your Homework Assignment

Get a basket, a cup or a bowl. Place within it five (5) smooth stones. Little garden pebbles will work.

On each stone, wrap or write the words: Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Faith, and Salvation around them.

Place the basket, cup, or bowl in the middle of your Bible (which is your sword) which you will have opened to Isaiah 41:10.

Place everything in a visible location where you can see it every single day.

Every time you have a negative thought about yourself, pull out one of those stones and recite the scripture:

Isaiah 41:10

Fear thou not; For I am with thee: Be not dismayed; For I am your God: I will strengthen thee; Yea, I will help thee; Yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Get ready to slay your giants!!!!

The top 10 piano songs of all time may be more a matter of personal preference than anything. Ask any piano student though, and he’ll likely name at least five of these 10. This list contains many of the “staples” of piano instructors worldwide:

1. Beethoven’s “Fur Elise.” Take piano lessons a few years and you’ll certainly encounter this classical piece. Most every young piano student requests Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” early in his or her career.

2. Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer.” Joplin managed to capture audiences during an era when “Negro music” was still controversial. Classical musicians of the early 20th century would have balked at Joplin’s name appearing alongside the likes of Beethoven and Mozart. Today, few would exclude this ragtime song from a top 10 piano songs list.

3. Pachelbel’s “Canon in D major.” Simply referred to as “Pachelbel’s Canon,” it often gets left off of favorite piano songs lists. That’s because it was originally written for stringed instruments. Nevertheless, the piano adaptation is one that most every intermediate to advanced piano student plays during his or her career.

4. Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” Beethoven had one of the most prolific musical careers in history. It’s little wonder that his name appears more than once on the popularity list. His “Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor” is probably more widely recognized by its common name, the “Moonlight Sonata.”

5. Brahm’s “Hungarian Dance.” Brahm may be known better in mainstream culture for his “Lullaby.” Every piano student learns both his “Lullaby” and the “Hungarian Dance.” The “Hungarian Dance” typically refers to his “No. 5 in F sharp minor.” The “Hungarian Dance” is actually a series of 21 songs. A great many of them were simply adaptations of existing songs. “No. 5 in F sharp minor” was one of a few originals.

6. Debussy’s “Clair de Lune.” This song appears as one of four movements in Claude Debussy’s “Suite Bergamasque.” The suite was probably based on Paul Verlaine’s poem of the same name. Its soft, lilting sounds contrast beautifully with the rest of the suite’s joyful parts.

7. Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” Ludwig van Beethoven cracks the list again with this song from his last complete symphony: “Symphony No. 9.” It was unusual in regard to many of his works, as well as others of the time. It was based on Friedrich Schiller’s poem of the same name and included human voices as orchestral instruments.

8. “Minuet in G.” This familiar piece is somewhat controversial. It is historically attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, having appeared in Bach’s “Notebook for Anna Magdalena.” The book was a series of compositions dedicated to Bach’s wife. The authorship of “Minuet in G” and another work was called into question hundreds of years later. Many musical historians now attribute it to Bach’s contemporary, Christian Petzold. Controversy aside, it remains a loved favorite of pianists everywhere.

9. Mozart’s “Turkish March.” No top 10 piano songs list would be complete without a nod to Mozart. His “Turkish March” or “Turkish Rondo” is a difficult piece to play, usually only attempted after several years of piano lessons.

10. Billy Joel’s “Root Beer Rag.” It’s fitting to include at least one contemporary artist in a top ten piano songs list. Billy Joel’s career is often reduced to his influence on pop music. But soulful ballads like “The Piano Man” only provide a glimpse into his musical talent. Billy Joel is considered one of the most proficient pianists alive today. His “Root Beer Rag” is attempted by many advanced piano students. Most agree, however, that few execute this lightning-fast number quite like the master himself.

Growing up, I always loved music, admired musicians, and still do. When I entered college, a friend in my freshman dorm played the harmonica. I was fascinated and envious. I had always wanted to play an instrument but we could never afford lessons, let alone the ability to buy an instrument. But, when this guy told me he bought it for two dollars, my heart leapt. Even I could afford that paltry sum. So I immediately ran down to the local department store and bought my own. It wasn’t until I got back to my room I realized I couldn’t play a note. It drove my roommate crazy and so I had to resort to playing in the bathroom or stairwell. I shouldn’t use the term “playing” at this juncture. It was making noise on a very irritating level at best. But every spare minute between classes and studying, I tackled “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” and other classics.

About three months later, I could play four or five nursery rhymes. Hey, it’s a start. With this major accomplishment under my belt, I moved on to show tunes. My family always had Broadway show music around like Camelot and Oklahoma, so, naturally I gravitated toward what I knew. Later, I would try out the Beatles and the Stones. By my senior year, I could play by ear. If I could hear it, I could play it. Playing the harmonica was very therapeutic and satisfying. Then a few years later, when I was at the home of a friend with a piano, they suggested that perhaps my ear training could translate to the piano. I explained that I couldn’t afford a piano and they told me to consider a cheap electric organ, which still used the same keyboard.

I found a used table-top organ in the newspaper for about twenty dollars and was excited. It was small with only three octaves, but it played well enough. Within a few weeks, I was able to manage my nursery rhymes, all by ear. I was now in my late twenties and continued with the organ for several years. Finally I traded it in for a larger floor model and learned to play just about anything. There was only one problem: I couldn’t read music or play any chords. So I got a few pieces of sheet music for Broadway shows and gave it a try. By the time I was forty, I taught myself chords and how to read music. I bought a cheap keyboard, finally graduating from the organ. A few years later, I bought a proper keyboard with all the great features allowing me to play many instrumental sounds.

With my new toy, I decided to expand my horizons and began collecting sheet music from every genre from classic rock of the 50’s to jazz and blues. Recently, I got a guitar for Christmas and am determined to learn to play my third instrument. I actually played in the church band for a few years and really enjoyed the experience. So why am I telling you this? Because it saved my life. No, I wasn’t dying of a rare disease where music controlled the cancer or anything like that. Instead, it allowed me to close out the rest of the crazy, stress-filled world and play the melodies and harmonies that could soothe my muddled mind. It could transport me back in time to my college days of the Jefferson Airplane when “White Rabbit” ruled the airwaves or to “Tommy, the rock opera.” I could escape the rigors of social or economic issues and relax.

I can’t think of a better way to lose yourself or push away the daily grind. It is more than just therapeutic: it’s regenerating and energizing. I figure that if a forty year old can teach himself to play, then anyone can. I started with the harmonica. But discovered that it was one of the harder instruments to play because you can’t see the holes and, therefore, have to play by ear. You can get a cheap keyboard and tap out a tune in minutes. There are dozens of lessons on the Internet and keyboards that are self-teaching using lights and technology.

The point is, it’s one of the least expensive ways to enjoy yourself and can be enriching and rewarding. You don’t have to become a concert pianist to enjoy yourself. You can plug in some earphones so you don’t annoy anyone around you and it uses almost no electricity. I guarantee, whatever age you are, you can learn to play and will be grateful when you have mastered even a few simple songs. It’s fun, entertaining, and will give you endless hours of pleasure. If you have never considered learning to play, make it a priority this year. No, I don’t work for Baldwin, but I believe in the power of music. It’s an idea and a gift, from me to you. And it just might save your life from boredom.

Heading into the new millennium everyone in the music industry was wishing for a “level” playing field; a field upon which independent music artists with less financial backing could compete with major artists and their major budgets. With the advent of the Internet, consequent evolution of digital music, a faulty music business model, and fleeting commercial opportunities, we can now say, voila! The playing field is officially leveled.

But what does it really mean?

I’m not an astronomer but I do know that as you look up into the galaxy two things determine your ability to see stars: (1) how brightly the star shines and (2) your vantage point. The music industry is the galaxy in which stars are often discovered and seen by their adoring fans. While there are many stars in the galaxy, some shine more brightly than others. It just so happens that in this music industry galaxy some (signed) stars get to shine more brightly because they have the resources (of a label) to do so.

For the longest time an invisible wall existed between “signed” and “unsigned” music artists. The unsigned often felt the stigma of rejection as they secretly sought validation by the record labels that shunned them. Then the 90s approached and talk of the playing field getting leveled became the impetus for a change in attitude about getting signed. Being “unsigned” suddenly became being synonymous with being unchained and unencumbered.

As record labels gained more infamy for being controlling, political, and creatively stagnating (thanks in large part to efforts by Courtney Love and Prince who displayed the word “slave” across his face for months during his bitter dispute with Warner Bros.) the stigma of being unsigned was transformed into a badge of honor and a more favorable business position for artists to be in.

Soon after the floodgates to independence swung open. With each passing decade an even larger constituency of music luminaries including Nine Inch Nails, Madonna, Tori Amos, Bobby Valentino, Keith Sweat, Velvet Revolver, and respected R&B crooner Joe, have joined the ranks of the independents.

And now what?

With the music industry in an overly reported state of flux (though many would say demise) what will become of this new breed of independents (those once affiliated with a major or have been the recipient of financial backing)? What impact will it have on true independents (those never affiliated with a major and have never been the recipient of financial backing)?

Will this independent movement create a rippling gridlock effect in terms of opportunity? How will both this new breed of independents and the true independents fair in a marketplace where there products can be obtained free of charge? Who will determine and create their viability? Without monetary support from a record company, how will they sustain themselves?

The answers to all of these questions can be found in a movie called Back to The Future. Some of you may have seen it. Others may have heard of it. The premise of the movie is this: The lead character played by Michael J. Fox must go backwards in time to change the events of the future, which is where he is from.

Bingo.

Because I teach a course on music industry career planning, I can asseverate that most people don’t know that the music industry was spawned from the music publishing industry. We often hear A&R executives say, “It’s about the song!” but we rarely hear them give an explanation as to why.

The music publishing industry, which began in the 1880s, originated by printers who manufactured a wide array of printed materials from newspapers, flyers, posters, and bibles became suppliers and retailers of sheet music. There was no television. There was no radio. Just families with pianos trying to entertain themselves by singing songs in the comfort of their own homes.

People wanted to share their (sheet) music with others and would buy additional copies from the printers. The printers offered to sell sheet music at their stores upon request in exchange for a percentage of the sale less their printing fees. Sheet music became a valuable product.

Printers hired singers to demonstrate (perform) sheet music in their stores to customers who came in to by other products and discovered that they could generate more sales. They quickly discovered that the more talented a salesman was, the more sheet music they sold. Eventually, these “singing salesmen” were sent to other locations to sell the sheet music that was sold by a particular printer. The advent of the transcontinental railway in the mid 1800s created a means for traveling salesmen to “go on the road” and perform songs for audiences who were eager for them.

This is known as the Vaudeville era; a time when a variety of performers (not just musical) would travel to new regions to entertain audiences. Printers took on more administrative duties in this era, often promoting songs and booking their traveling salesmen. They redefined themselves as publishers. The traveling salesmen became crucial to the sale of sheet music and the livelihood of the publisher. They redefined themselves as entertainers and discovered that they could financially sustain themselves on the road with their performance talent.

Fast forward.

According to the Associate Press, the concert business grossed just under $4 billion worldwide in 2008, the most ever for a year and up almost 13 percent over last year, according to Billboard magazine. In North America, the average box office gross was up 18 percent and the average attendance up 6.3 percent. Bon Jovi’s tour was the year’s highest-grossing, based on the trade publication’s data from November 14, 2007, to November 11, 2008. It grossed $210.6 million and drew nearly 2.2 million fans. Bruce Springsteen was second ($204.5 million gross) followed by Madonna ($162 million). The most lucrative country tours were Kenny Chesney, sixth on the list with $86 million gross; and Rascal Flatts, 10th with $55.8 million.

Compare those numbers with the repetitive theme that’s been reported for the last 5 years since the industry’s peak in 2000:According to data from Nielsen SoundScan, album sales have declined 45 percent, although digital music purchases continue to grow at a rapid rate.

The year’s biggest seller was Lil Wayne’s album “Tha Carter III” (Cash Money/Universal Motown), which sold 2.87 million copies, followed by Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” (Capitol), with 2.14 million. “Fearless” (Big Machine), the second album by the 19-year-old country star Taylor Swift, was third, with 2.11 million. (Ms. Swift also scored the sixth-highest seller this year, for her self-titled debut, released in 2006, which sold 1.6 million copies in 2008.)

The Associated Press goes on to state…”The music industry has grown accustomed to dismal sales numbers, and this year even the good news comes with disappointment. “Tha Carter III” is the first release in SoundScan’s 17-year history to top the year-end list with sales of less than 3 million.”

Back to the future we go. Performing is where the viability is. It always has been. The sale of (CDs) recordings will soon be secondary to the sale of talent that can perform any recording – just like the old days. And what happens to the recordings? They will serve their original intent: promotion of the song and marketing of the talent performing it. Other than that, they will merely be mementos.

Publishers will continue to make their money by exploiting recordings in any way that they can, and performing valuable administrative duties. Much hasn’t changed for them except for new mediums and revenue streams from which they now collect income. Oddly enough, music publishers don’t have to look back to the future; they never really moved forward. Their business model remains strong and in tact.

Record labels…they will have to redefine themselves and their functions – quickly. The market is presently wide open for any financially backed entity to supply operating capital to music businesses that have solid infrastructure; such infrastructure can be accomplished with the help of a competent manager and/or attorney.

Artists formerly signed to major labels and who have been fortunate enough to have hit songs will receive top consideration to perform in venues. New artists will have to step their game up tremendously to attract talent buyers and booking agents, but it can be done – especially with the help of a loyal audience. With MySpace and YouTube as marketing resources, their challenges aren’t nearly as daunting as the Vaudeville entertainers who had to blindly win over audiences.

Today’s new independents and true independents may want to follow their lead by attempting to win the allegiance of music lovers by performing quality songs that inspire them to make their music a part of their everyday lives…music that can be used as a form of escape or discovery, expression or therapy. When that occurs they will be rewarded with fan loyalty and a truly sustainable career will emerge.

It is said that those who don’t know their history are doomed to repeat it. Hopefully that holds true for today’s music artists. Those who will thrive in this new business model will be fully prepared to make the transition from being a successful recording artist (i.e., one who sells a lot of records), to being a successful performing artist (i.e., one who makes a living from his/her/their live performances) by traveling back to the future with great shows and polished talent.
