Almost everyone knows about grapes: they are fruits, they grow in bunches, they grow on vines, and they are sweet and juicy — well, at least they are supposed to be. Grapes are eaten as is or made into things like raisins, juice, and wine. They are even used in the tanning process of making leather! The vine is the source of nutrition for the grape as it is the part that draws water and nutrients from the ground and distributes them. The vine grows longer and longer over time and can climb up things like rocks and trees.
What if there are no trees or rocks to climb up on? The vine cannot grow vertically on its own as it is neither woody enough nor thick enough. The fruits are not able to develop properly as they are lying on the ground, getting wet and covered with dirt. Thus they do not get enough sunlight and end up being small and sour. This is particularly undesirable when planting grapes. Grape trellis is a requisite of grape cultivation.
A trellis is a grid-like structure made to support vines of any sort. The grid is made either by interweaving wood, bamboo, or even iron strips, or by arranging lengths of sturdy material in a lattice and fixing them in position with wire or rope. Trellises can be decorative, to add beauty to a garden. They can also be plain but functional, made for their utility and not their looks. Ivy trellises are found on some houses and buildings; the trellis is used to decorate the building or house with the natural beauty of ivy. Grape trellis in vineyards is often of the second type; they are built for the singular purpose of supporting the vines.
Grape trellis is used extensively in grape cultivation. It provides a sturdy structure for vine to cling on to and grow on. This means that the grape clusters are raised higher and receive more sunlight as a result. Sunlight is critical to the proper growth of grapes and directly affects their quality. Grape trellises also make harvesting easier — harvesters do not have to stoop over to pick grapes.
For each grapevine planted, about eight feet of trellis are required. The trellis must be very sturdy. It must be able to hold up its own weight, the weight of fully-grown vines, and full crops of grapes. In addition to supporting all that weight, it must be strong enough to resist being toppled over by winds.
There are many designs for grape trellis. Some have canopies made of wire, for utilizing even more space. Designs aside, all grape trellises must be positioned properly, to maximize the sunlight. The sunlight must reach all parts of the plant, with the exception of the roots buried underground.
The grape trellis provides a backbone for the grapevine; a spine for the vine, if you will. This is what allows it to flourish and bear good fruits. Trellises are the most important structures in vineyards, without them; there would be no vineyard to speak of.
