The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has jurisdiction of over 200 different areas of federal law, these are grouped into three national security categories and five criminal categories. The FBI has a mission statement “to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats and to enforce the criminal laws of the United States”. So therefore, the majority of FBI works lies in investigation, and of course protection of United States citizens and our country.
The three national security Priorities of the FBI are Counter-terrorism, which includes international and domestic terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Then there is Counterintelligence, which includes counterespionage, counter proliferation, and economic espionage. The Federal Bureau of Investigation also handles Cyber Crime such as computer intrusions, online predators, piracy, and internet fraud.
The Criminal priorities of the FBI include public corruption, such as government fraud, election issues, and corrupt foreign policies. Civil Right issues like hate crimes, human trafficking, color of law, and freedom to access clinics. Organized crimes issues like mafia, Balkan, Sports bribery, Asian and African. The FBI is also responsible for white collar crimes like antitrust, fraud of bankruptcy, securities, health care, mortgage, telemarketing and corporate fraud. Then of course the FBI handles all major and violent crimes like art theft, bank robberies, cargo theft, and crimes against children, gangs, jewel thefts and serial killers.
Basically if you go to bed feeling safe at night from cyber criminals to violent gangs and mob bosses, and everything in between thank the FBI. They are the ones that keep our country safe from it all and more through their investigative teams, law enforcement and intelligence partners both in our country and around the world; they are working around the clock around the globe.
As of March 2010 the FBI employed a total of 33,925, this includes 13,492 specialist and 20,433 support personal. In the FBI are intelligence analysts, language specialist, scientist, forensic experts, technology experts and many others.
The budget of the FBI for 2010 is $7.9 billion this includes the $618 million to increase our programs in counter-terrorism, surveillance, weapons of mass destruction and white collar crimes.
The FBI literally has locations around the world; there are 56 field offices in the United States that are located throughout major cities. Then there are over 400 resident agencies in smaller cities across the United States, with Headquarters being in Washington D.C. On top of that there are also more than 60 international offices in U.S. embassies worldwide.
Since 9/11, the FBI and its amazing men and woman have implemented an organization that helps to protect and prevent terrorism. The National Security Branch was created to help prevent terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction both from being any kind of a threat to our country. It is run under the Senior FBI directive.
