Buying a Thai amulet that is authentic and blessed from an online website is a bit of a puzzle. How would you possibly know which Thai amulets are genuine and which are bogus? Can you really tell whether the amulet you are looking at on a Thai website is the real deal? Are there any tips you can follow to increase your chances of success?

Here are some tips you can use to help decipher whether the Thai amulet you are about to purchase is an original from a Theravada Buddhist temple in Thailand – or, a fake worth a couple of pennies because they are made and sold in tremendous bulk.

Thai Amulet Purchasing Tips – What Does Not Work:

• Photos. Not only can photos be faked, but, having lived here in Thailand for five years now I can tell you that when looking at amulets just a half inch from their surface with a jeweler’s loupe, it is often impossible for me to tell whether the amulet I am looking at is a copy or real. Photos are worthless when trying to assess the value of the amulet being represented.
• Materials the amulet is made from makes no difference at all in relation to whether or not it is a fake amulet. Gold, silver, brass, copper, bronze, clay, plastic, wood, stainless steel, tin, pewter, bone, ivory – I think I have seen amulets of every sort of material on the planet. Every one of them can be faked easily.

The problem is, faking Thai amulet authenticity is an easy and profitable feat. Very few experts can tell every fake amulet, so other criteria must be taken into account to assess a fraudulent claim of authenticity. Thee following are soft criteria that you can use as tips to help you decide whether the seller is authentic or not. These have more to do with getting to know the seller than any sort of truth analysis of the amulets he or she is selling.

• Does the Seller Reside in Thailand? The seller of authentic Thai amulets is almost certainly still living in Thailand. You can almost immediately weed out anyone not physically residing in Thailand at the present moment. If your amulets aren’t shipped from Thailand there is an even better chance you are not getting genuine articles.
• Does the seller of the amulets sell hype or does it appear that the seller is just listing the amulets so others might share in their beauty by purchasing them? Thai amulet sellers are often times in the business for a couple of simple and heartfelt reasons. The first reason is – they are Buddhist and want to share the amulets with other Buddhists all over the world. The amulets are not high priced – over $100 USD, and there are not outrageous claims about the magical powers of the amulets.
• Does the Seller Try to Sell You on Emotion? Meaning, does the Thai amulet seller try to get you very emotional about having to purchase this amulet to make you happy or realize a fortune of good luck? Hype in every form is usually contrary to how the good intentioned and genuine Buddhist amulet sellers present themselves.

There are many Thai amulets sold each day online. A very high percentage of these amulets are non-genuine amulets and generally worthless. I have found bronze and copper amulets for 4 cents each in bags of 500 pieces in Chinese stores in Thailand that I have later seen sell for $19.95 at Ebay. Are you buying four cent amulets for 500 times their worth too?

Find a Thai amulet seller that doesn’t sell using hype. Find one that physically resides in Thailand and that can take photos of an amulet you wish to purchase beside today’s Bangkok Post or The Nation newspaper to prove to you the amulet really exists. Order an inexpensive amulet or two as a test before spending more than a hundred dollars on a large order. Can they deliver? What is the quality of Thai amulet the seller sells?

Amazing Grace for piano is a popular song on the internet. In this piano lesson we will learn to play this song with melody and chords without the use of sheet music. We will start by finding the note C.

The note C on your piano is found on many places on the piano keyboard. C is always to the left of two black keys on the keyboard. Let’s find the middle C on the piano.

The middle C is often called C4 as it is in the fourth octave of an ordinary upright piano or grand piano. It is sometimes called the keyhole C as it is at the same horizontal position as the keyhole on some pianos.

In this piano lesson we will call it C4 and the C to the left of this note we will call C3 and so on. We will now continue this piano lesson by learning the song Amazing Grace. Let’s take a look at the lyrics to the first verse:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost, but now am found

Was blind, but now I see

We will play this song in the key of F-major. You don’t need to know exactly what this mean but it still is in F-major anyway.

We will start with the first line:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

Here is the notes to play to this line:

C4 F4 A4 F4 A4 G4 F4 D4 C4

In this piano lesson we will use a type of piano tab that doesn’t indicate the length of the individual notes. You will probably figure out this by yourself as you know the melody!

Let’s continue with the next line:

We will now take a break in this piano lesson and amuse ourselves with three piano chords that you can play with your left hand as you play the melody with your right hand.

The first piano chord is called F-major or just F and it is played with these notes in this song:

F: C3 F3 A3

The next chord is Bb-major. It is played with these notes:

Bb: D3 F3 Bb3

What is the note Bb3?

Well, the ordinary note B3 is immediately to the left of the note C4. Bb3 is the black key immediately to the left of the note B3. Okey?

The third and last chord we will use in this piano lesson is the chord C7. It is played in the following way:

C7: C3 E3 Bb3

If you want to use these chords in the song I recommend that you learn them by heart first. Now we will continue with the piano lesson.

Our piano lesson on Amazing Grace is completed as far as the piano melody is concerned but if you want to use your left hand to play the chords as you play the right hand melody you’ll find the bonus text here:

I will notate the melody as I did before but at certain places among the notes I will place the piano chords you already have learned after a slash.

When you see a note with a slash and a piano chord after it you are supposed to play the note and the chord at the same time.

A mournful wail shatters the stillness, rising and falling like ocean waves, echoing through the dark, lonely hills. It is the cry of the Banshee, an omen that someone will die.

According to Irish folklore, the Banshee wails, or “keens,” for only the five major families of Ireland: the O’Neils, the O’Briens, the O’Connors, the O’Gradys, and the Kavanaghs. Each Banshee attaches itself to a mortal family and follows that family wherever it travels, even across the ocean.

When someone in the family is about to die she stalks the hills around their home, her silver-grey hair streaming like a gossamer waterfall to the ground, her face pale and eyes red from weeping, her grey-white cloak as fine as cobwebs clinging to her tall slender frame. If you catch a Banshee, she must reveal the name of the person for whom she is keening.

The Banshee can take many forms. She may appear as a beautiful young woman, as a stately matron, as an old hag, or as an animal Irish folklore associates with witchcraft, such as a hooded crow, a hare, or a weasel. Some legends maintain that she is a ghost, often of a murdered woman or woman who died in childbirth.

In Ireland she is called Bean Sidhe (Sidhe pronounced “shee”), which literally means “woman of the fairy mound.” Her Scottish counterpart is Bean Nighe, or “washer woman,” which is another form she can take. The English word “keen” is derived from the Irish caoineadh, which means “lament.”

Traditionally, a woman would sing a lament, which was said to be an imitation of the Banshee’s cry, at peasant funerals.

According to legend, Banshees would appear before the death of a member of the five major families and sing their laments. If several banshees appeared, it foretold that someone great or holy would die.

The Banshee herself often attends funerals, her wails blending in with those of the mourners.

The short answer is yes, they do. The more complex answer is just that; more complex.

A recent investigation by Integrated Pest Management shows that about 40 percent of the farmers in Thailand are using pesticides in the growing of their crops.

A staggering 14 percent have admitted to using illegal pesticides in the growing of their crops. By illegal, it refers to chemicals which are considered to the environment or to humans.

Is there prevention?

Washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before you eat them or cook them, is one way to help remove the chemical residues, but it should be a habit from childhood to wash your fruits and vegetables before you eat them.

Organic minded friends suggest using a little white vinegar diluted with water to wipe-down your fruits and vegetables after you have washed them thoroughly and then a quick rinse again.

Baking soda is in most kitchen cupboards and makes an interesting foaming solution when mixed with vinegar, or if you don’t want the foam, just use water.

(In the area of non-related information: Here’s another use for a mixture of vinegar and baking soda; just a little baking soda and a little vinegar will make a white paste (after it foams a bit), wipe the mixture on your nose and let it dry (about 10 to 20 minutes) then wash your face as usual, it is a great blackhead remover. I do it once a week as part of my skin care regiment.)

Another reason to wash your fruits and vegetables is the bacteria factor from the numerous insects and animals that roam the farms. Who knows where they have been, walked thru, or have growing on them. All I know is that you don’t want it on your food.

You have a better chance of eliminating the entire residue if you are eating fruits and vegetables that have to be peeled.

Remember, the bowl you placed them in, the cutting board you cut them on, and the counter that you placed them on can all be pesticide gatherers, so wash thoroughly after use so that the dessert gelatin doesn’t taste funny to the children.

Picking berries from a tree or bush and eating them while taking a romantic walk with your sweetheart may look cool in the movies, but it’s not recommended.

Organic is one way to go.

Certified fruits and vegetables that are guaranteed not to be grown with chemicals or pesticides are an alternative, but if you don’t personally inspect the farms in Thailand, you could be in for a surprise.

Pirated DVDs are common in the Kingdom, along with fake sport shoes, shirts, and ladies handbags.

And, since it is cheaper to print up nice color brochures telling about how organically everything is grown, and get the higher organic prices, rather than actually use natural fertilizers to grow the food, there’s always that risk. Being sold as in Thailand doesn’t guarantee that the fruits and vegetables are truly organic.

I certainly don’t have the time to go and inspect every farm.

The demand for organic fruits and vegetables, eggs, meat and poultry is growing, and who is to say that the entire shipment is chemical and pesticide free.

You just take your chances and shop at reputable markets, but unless you have your own chemical lab; it’s hard to know for sure. Wash, wash, wash.

One of the reasons for higher prices for organic foods is the higher cost of producing them.

Yields from the fields are smaller because the growing food source isn’t bombarded with chemicals.

If you were to take all the land in the world that is not just a pile of sand or a sheet of ice, you would discover that about half of it is used for food production.

Land mass is not growing, if anything, it is shrinking. However, the population is growing.

More mouths to feed with the same amount of land to produce food and you get chemicals and pesticides to turbo-charge the farm land.

We can’t all eat organic, because there’s just too many of us and too little room to farm.

Crop rotation is good for the soil on Mother Earth and rotating which fruits and vegetables that you eat will be a way to avoid a high concentration of whichever chemical or pesticide that is being used to grow your favorite food.

The factors that you have to consider before going organic with your food choices in Thailand are these;

1) Authenticity; are the items that you are buying really organic? Look for the certification.

2) Cost; if it costs more to grow, it probably costs more to buy. (Be cautious of cheap organic produce.)

3) Safety; not all organic methods are the same.

4) Taste; once you get use to the robust taste of organically grown food, it will be tough to turn back.

Know the difference between the terms Organic and Natural.

When something is labeled as being organically grown or raised it generally means that they are produced, manufactured, and handled in accordance to very strict rules and methods of farming.

Natural usually refers to the ingredients that somehow manage to maintain their natural properties in the final item that is created.

For anyone visiting Phuket in Thailand, an obvious point of concern is how much things will cost. Thailand has always been a relatively cheap place to go for a holiday. As a destination, Phuket is favored by everyone from Brits to Israelis. But the global economic crisis coupled with the effects of negative media coverage on Thailand has meant that less people are visiting the country. Yet perhaps bigger problem is today’s exchange rate.

When I first arrived in Thailand, about four years ago, the pound sterling was changing at one to 75 baht. That was a decent exchange rate and it meant that my money went far, be it in Bangkok or Phuket. Now, I find myself in Phuket looking at an exchange rate that defies believe. The pound sterling is now trading at one to 52 baht. That’s a decline of almost one third in just a few years.

Prices in Thailand have not changed dramatically in that time. Expats living in the country certainly wouldn’t have noticed too much of a difference, but for people visiting from the United Kingdom, having one third less to spend than usual is a big change.

It isn’t, however, that the baht has become especially strong. What is happening is that the pound is incredibly weak. It’s so weak that at the moment it’s trading about one for one with the euro, which makes trips to Europe unappealing for any British people. The Brits are staying home. Money is tight enough as it is without the exchange rates working against people.

The Americans are in a similar situation. The dollar has typically been trading at about one to 35 baht in the past few years. Right now, it’s down to one to 22 baht. Again, that’s a decline of about one third. Ultimately, people will travel to Thailand regardless of political turmoil and internal squabbling. But these people are not going to travel if they don’t have the money to do so.

With it being so close to 50 baht to the pound, changing money from sterling to baht is almost financial suicide. Conversely, it’s not a bad time for British people to be paid in baht. As an example, I recently wired a large sum of baht to the UK at an exchange rate of 52 baht to the pound. That’s about as low as it is going to get and it’s difficult to trust the baht in the long run, whereas the pound is a traditionally strong currency.

For all of us in Phuket and the rest of Thailand, we can only hope that 2009 brings more favorable exchange rates against the baht. The pound and the dollar have taken some really big knocks this year and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. The tourism industry in Phuket needs all the help it can get at the moment, but some things are out of the control of the island and its people.

For anyone visiting Phuket in Thailand, an obvious point of concern is how much things will cost. Thailand has always been a relatively cheap place to go for a holiday. As a destination, Phuket is favored by everyone from Brits to Israelis. But the global economic crisis coupled with the effects of negative media coverage on Thailand has meant that less people are visiting the country. Yet perhaps bigger problem is today’s exchange rate.

When I first arrived in Thailand, about four years ago, the pound sterling was changing at one to 75 baht. That was a decent exchange rate and it meant that my money went far, be it in Bangkok or Phuket. Now, I find myself in Phuket looking at an exchange rate that defies believe. The pound sterling is now trading at one to 52 baht. That’s a decline of almost one third in just a few years.

Prices in Thailand have not changed dramatically in that time. Expats living in the country certainly wouldn’t have noticed too much of a difference, but for people visiting from the United Kingdom, having one third less to spend than usual is a big change.

It isn’t, however, that the baht has become especially strong. What is happening is that the pound is incredibly weak. It’s so weak that at the moment it’s trading about one for one with the euro, which makes trips to Europe unappealing for any British people. The Brits are staying home. Money is tight enough as it is without the exchange rates working against people.

The Americans are in a similar situation. The dollar has typically been trading at about one to 35 baht in the past few years. Right now, it’s down to one to 22 baht. Again, that’s a decline of about one third. Ultimately, people will travel to Thailand regardless of political turmoil and internal squabbling. But these people are not going to travel if they don’t have the money to do so.

With it being so close to 50 baht to the pound, changing money from sterling to baht is almost financial suicide. Conversely, it’s not a bad time for British people to be paid in baht. As an example, I recently wired a large sum of baht to the UK at an exchange rate of 52 baht to the pound. That’s about as low as it is going to get and it’s difficult to trust the baht in the long run, whereas the pound is a traditionally strong currency.

For all of us in Phuket and the rest of Thailand, we can only hope that 2009 brings more favorable exchange rates against the baht. The pound and the dollar have taken some really big knocks this year and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. The tourism industry in Phuket needs all the help it can get at the moment, but some things are out of the control of the island and its people.

Many of these songs have become associated with the ukulele because of a single, great interpretation using the ukulele.

Tonight You Belong To Me

Tonight You Belong to Me was written in 1926 by Billy Rose and Lee David. It became famous after it was used in the movie The Jerk. It features in a scene on the beach with Steve Martin serenading Bernadette Peters with a ukulele. Although Steve Martin is a ukulele player, he mimed to the playing of Lyle Ritz.

Aloha ‘Oe

Aloha Oe is one of the oldest ukulele songs. It was written by the Hawaiian Queen Lili’uokalani at the end of the 19th Century. The song was originally a love song but has become a farewell song because of its vocal refrain (aloha ‘oe means ‘farewell to you’). The song has recently become popular with children after being used in the cartoon Lilo and Stitch.

Ukulele Lady

In the 1920s, there was a huge fad for all things Hawaiian. Songwriters were quick to pick up on this trend and started writing songs in a Hawaiian style with references to various items of Hawaiiana. Obviously, this meant plenty of ukulele references in songs like Ukulele Moon, Ukulele Island and, most famously, Ukulele Lady.

Tip Toe Through the Tulips

Tiny Tim is probably the most famous ukulele player of all time and Tip Toe Through the Tulips his biggest hit. With his unconventional appearance and strange, warbling voice, he wasn’t the greatest ambassador for the ukulele. However, he did rescue a number of great songs from the 1920s from obscurity.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

There were hardly any ukulele versions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow before Israel Kamakawiwo’ole recorded his version of the song in 1997. His version had such charm and beauty that it became a huge success and is regularly featured in films and TV shows set in Hawaii such as 50 First Dates. More recently, the song was covered by Jason Castro on American Idol to thumbs up from the judges and the audience alike.
