Socratic questioning is a highly effective method used by teachers of all subjects to help their students learn and retain information. Instead of answering students’ questions directly, teachers prompt their students with questions designed to “draw out” from them the answers to their own questions.

I constantly use Socratic questioning to help my beginning and intermediate piano students think completely and accurately about the music they are making. It’s more time consuming than simply telling students what they want to know. But the investment of time is well worth it in the long term because it helps students become more self-reliant and confident in their own problem-solving abilities.

Learning to use Socratic questioning is easy and it works with students of all ages and abilities.

Here’s an example of how I used Socratic questioning in my piano studio recently to help a young student correct a note mistake.

Student: Was that right?

Dr. Joe: Did you hear something that didn’t sound quite right to you?

S: I think so.

DJ: Where was it in the music?

S: (points) I think it was here in the LH. (The problem was actually in the RH)

DJ: You’re not really sure, are you?

S: Not really.

DJ: So why don’t you play it again and listen carefully to see if there really was a LH mistake.

S: (plays again) I’m still not sure.

DJ: Well, why don’t you play the LH by itself and double-check the notes.

S: (plays the LH) It seems OK.

DJ: OK. Now try the RH.

S: (plays the RH) I’m still not sure

DJ: What’s the interval between this B and this A? Is it a 2nd or a 3rd?

S: A third.

DJ: Is it? It goes from a line note to the very next space note. Would that be a 2nd or a 3rd?

S: A second. DJ: Is a second what you actually played?

S: (tries again). I guess I played a third.

DJ: OK. Can you play a second starting with the 5th finger on the B?

S: (tries again). Is that right?

DJ: Does it sound right to you? S: It sounds different.

DJ: Yes, it does. So how about rehearsing that measure five times with the 2nd in there so that the next time you practice, you won’t make that mistake again.

S: (plays 5 times in a row without mistake)

DJ: That was exactly right. How did it sound to you?

S: Pretty good.

DJ: Do you think you are ready to play the whole piece now?

S: Yes.

DJ: Let’s hear it.

Pointing out students’ mistakes and then showing them how to fix them might seem more expedient. But it deprives students of the ability to develop the very analytical skills that are so crucial to piano practicing and playing success.
