I was fortunate to be able to visit the William Hogarth exhibition at the Tate Britain. Often these special exhibitions tend to promise a lot and deliver little. Previously a Leonardo da Vinci drawings exhibition which I visited at the National Art Gallery was quite disappointingly sparse. Besides that, it was packed and I couldn’t really enjoy the few pieces on display as it was difficult to get close enough to examine the detailed drawings.
This time at the Tate Britain, the Monday visit proved to be excellent timing as the numbers of visitors were bearable and it was relatively easy to view the pieces. To add to the pleasure, Hogarth’s work was extraordinarily well represented and the art on view an extensive representation of his prolific work.
The series of etchings and the copper plate representing one of the works, were fascinating and my favourite section of the exhibition. I have always been interested in this area of art, mainly because my parents loved Albrecht Dürer and I was introduced to his prints at an early age. Add to this the fact that I worked at a computer training centre that taught DTP (desktop publishing) the digital print process, and my contact with the printed form has certainly stretched over a few years.
The detail on Hogarth’s prints is wonderful. Of course nowadays with computers and tools such as Adobe PhotoShop and Illustrator, preparing an image for print is a relatively quick creative process in comparison to the painstacking details which had to get engraved into the copper plates. What amazed me even more was the beautiful text at the bottom of the plate, providing an annotation to the print. I would imagine that this is where the expression to have a copperplate handwriting comes from. Not only was the writing uniform, but also reversed, due to the printing process.
The theme of moralizing art reminded me strongly of the commentary offered by the modern day political or editorial cartoonist. It was interesting to see that Hogarth addressed some of the issues over a series of prints such as the eight pictures showing the reckless life of the heir Tom Rakewell, who wasted all his money, ditched his baby and girl-friend to marry an older wealthy woman to get him out of jail. Then promptly gambled that away and via a further stint in debtor’s prison ended up in the mad house. It appears, not much has changed since the 18th century. This story could quite easily play itself out in our modern society.
Hogarth also commented on prostitution as in the six print A Harlot’s Progress. His series on Before and After describes the ‘mating game’ which, if one changed the clothes to current fashion, would be as relevant now as then. I found it amusing, that in a way, the good old marketing saying that sex sells, could be attributed to some of the prints in the morals series which were very popular at the time and sold well.
The many portraits and conversation pieces showing groups of wealthy patrons displayed in various social positions were not as real to me as the prints. The faces seemed to have a similar look, bulging eyes and pouting mouthes. But that is just a personal point of view. A steady flow of portrait work would have provided a welcome revenue stream through.
There were many more prints that I could have spent more time with, but after a few hours of shuffling past pictures, bumping into other people and standing while waiting for a gap in the queue, it was time to have a rest with a cup of coffee and then to check out the fabulous Turner wing of the gallery. It’s good to get a healthy dose of culture every now and then.
