Relax in pin yin
This article is about “Relax in pin yin”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Relax in pin yin”:
Almost every learner of Chinese hits a brick wall at one point or another when it comes to tones. They can be tremendously intimidating. English is not a tonal language and so it feels unnatural to speak without altering tone in a conversational way, the way that we do in English. Unfortunately, there is no way around it. Unless you get the hang of those tones, no one is going to understand what you’re saying.
Take a deep breath. Relax. There’s no need to get upset about it, because the tone problem is essentially a problem that solves itself in time. Don’t memorize the tones for every word you learn, and don’t painstakingly try to shift your voice when you read pinyin.
Instead, focus on copying the sounds that Chinese speakers make. Turn yourself into a tape recorder, and copy the sounds instead, just the way that you hear them. When you think about it, this is what Chinese children do when they are learning Chinese as a first language. In fact, it’s the only genuine way to learn any language at all. If you copy the sounds the way that you hear them, the tones will take care of themselves.
In the mean time, here is a refresher on what to listen for and how to pronounce them if you get stuck. The four tones are- Rising, falling, high, and the dip. I know they’re referred to differently elsewhere, but I remember them this way.
1. Rising
A rising tone sounds like a question in English. As English speakers, we tack that tone on to the last word of any sentence that we want to be a question. If you have trouble pronouncing it, just think of the word as its own little question, and say it like that.
2. Falling
The falling tone is one of the reasons that English speakers often find Chinese to be a language that sounds “angry”. The truth is, if you don’t put a little anger into the falling tone you’re probably being too subtle. The syllable should be quick, and take less time to say than with a different tone. I like to imagine that I’m swearing when I use a falling tone. Most of our curses include a falling tone.
3. High
You know the sound your microwave makes when it’s finished cooking something? It’s probably something like a high tone in Chinese. Just pronounce the word with a slightly higher pitch and drag the vowel out a little bit. You’ll really start to hear it in Chinese questions that end with the word “ma”.
4. The Dip
Some people call this a rising tone. My first Chinese teacher called it a “Swedish tone”. If you listen to native speakers of Swedish with heavy accents, they pronounce many words in English with this sort of a tone. The first half of the syllable last a little longer than the second half.
I hope this helps a little bit with your tones! Get to know the different tones and try identifying them in something that you hear. See if you can write down the pinyin including the tones for something that you hear from a tape or native speaker. The most important thing though, is not to spend too much time worrying about it. Tones will come naturally when you copy the sounds you hear.
