Angus Young, enfante terrible of hard rock and its poster-boy of wild onstage antics, is one of the most hardworking, energetic rock guitarists around. The power he packs in that diminutive, five-foot two frame, sets the stage on fire and brings his young audience screaming to its feet. In the opinion of many critics and contemporaries, Angus Young is one of rock and roll’s best and most under-rated guitarists. The founder of the band AC/DC, Young was ranked #96 on its list of the hundred greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine and the band was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Born Angus McKinnon Young on 31 March, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland, Angus was the youngest of eight siblings in a family inclined towards music. In the early 1960s, the family moved to Australia, just as the rock and roll revolution was sweeping Britain.

The Beginning Of AC/DC

Young first picked up the guitar at the age of five, at a neighbor’s house and was fascinated enough to convert his old banjo into a guitar by restringing it. Young’s older brother George was already a successful musician with the band Easybeats and had the 1966 smash hit, ‘Friday on my Mind’ under his belt.

Inspired by their older brother’s success, Angus and another brother Malcolm also took up guitar-playing in earnest. They were tutored in the art by George, whenever he was home from tour. Young was impressed by the blues music of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry, BB King, as also the music of blues based rock bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who. He would be found practicing day and night on his guitar – a gift from his brother George. Eventually, Young decided that playing guitar was where his passion lay and joined his first band Kantukee.

In 1973, the Young brothers Malcolm and Angus finally decided to launch their own band, plans for which had been brewing since a few years. In search of a name for the band, they settled on AC/DC from the back of their sister’s sewing machine. AC/DC implied electricity with a hint of danger and was the perfect name for a band that meant business. The band revolved around the musical abilities of firebrand Angus Young as lead guitarist, who by then had established a distinctive stage persona. It featured Angus as lead guitar, Malcolm on rhythm guitar, Bon Scott on vocals, Phil Rudd on drums and Mark Evans on bass.

A Schoolboy With Style

For his onstage look, Angus experimented with various get-ups like Spiderman, a gorilla, Zorro and even a parody of Superman calling himself Super-Ang. But none of them seemed gimmicky enough, till his sister suggested that he dress up as a schoolboy. In the age of glam rock, when every rocker worth his name used lavish stage costumes, Angus stood out from the flock in his Ashfield Boys High school uniform complete with black tie, school cap and black shoes. It turned out to be a brilliant promotional trick as the uniform became the instant- recall trademark of the band.

Angus Young is famous for his fluid, beautiful playing style which is very straight blues. He doesn’t resort to guitar gimmicks as in extra accessories and amp-provided effects. Sometimes he is known to add touches of Scottish folk music to his playing- a tribute to his Scottish roots. He is especially known for his vibrato and his intricate improvisation in live shows. His music is pure, unadulterated, honest to goodness rock and roll that aims for the gut. Energetic and a livewire on stage, he has always believed in giving his fans their money’s worth.

“Its just rock and roll. A lot of times we get criticised for it. A lot of music papers come out with: ‘When are they going to stop playing these three chords?’ If you believe you shouldn’t play just three chords it’s pretty silly on their part. To us, the simpler a song is, the better,’ cause it’s more in line with what the person on the street is.”

On stage, Angus is power personified. His concerts exude exuberance and unbridled energy. His act is peppered with high intensity jumps, running from one end of the stage to the other, and his trademark ‘bob’ in which he headbangs while tapping his feet in rhythm, all the while playing guitar. He has also perfected the ‘duckwalk’ of his idol Chuck Berry which he adds to his live shows. In every live performance of the song ‘Rocker’, Angus would clamber onto Bon Scott’s shoulders, and they would walk down the aisle amidst the audience with smoke streaming out of a satchel on his back while he played an extended guitar solo. The highlight of each show is always the ‘spasm’, in which he falls to the ground, kicking, writhing and spinning in circles, never dropping a note on his guitar. This trick never fails to bring the audience to a frenzy. Angus has also performed a strip act on some of his performances. Young’s stage antics are the reason why each and every concert of AC/DC is a sell-out.  

The ‘spasm’ came to be, quite by chance. In the pre AC/DC days, Young was playing live with a band named Tantrum, at a small nightclub in Sydney. Things were going pretty badly and to make matters worse, while playing a solo Angus tripped on a cable wire and fell. He started writhing and shaking spasmodically on the ground while playing his guitar, to make it look like part of the act. That was the only clap they got that night, and since then, Angus has been ‘spasming’ in every concert.

The band has released albums consistently with High Voltage(1975), T.N.T(1975), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap(1976), Let There Be Rock(1977- this album had a simultaneous worldwide release), Powerage(1978), Highway to Hell(1979- their first million seller album), Back to Black(1980), For Those About to Rock- We Salute You(1981- their first album to hit #1 in the US charts), Who Made Who(1986), Blow up Your Video(1988), The Razor’s Edge(1991), Ballbreaker(1995), and their last offering-Stiff Upper Lip(2000).

Back in Black was released after the tragic death of vocalist Bon Scott in 1980 and went on to become a huge hit. To date, the album has sold 41 million copies worldwide and is the sixth bestselling rock album of all time. Brian Johnson was the replacement vocalist, selected after lengthy auditions.

The average values listed from the N.A.D.A. Official Used Car or truck Guide are based upon reports of actual transactions by dealers and auction houses throughout every area for which a guide is published. 1. Bronx Zoo: If you are a Bank of America (BOA) customer and have a BOA ATM, Debit or Credit Card, you get free admissions on the first weekend of every month. Also on Wednesdays throughout the year admissions is pay as you wish or you just give a donation. You may have to pay for separate exhibits. It is one of the biggest zoos that we’ve been to.

2. Toys r Us: This 3 Story toy heaven is right in the heart of Times Square. There is also a Ferris wheel ride inside the store! The kids can sit in their favorite seat on the wheel: a cozy coupe, school bus, or pink Barbie Cadillac, Cars. You can also go to FAO Schwarz. This huge 50,000 square feet Toy store is located at 5th Avenue -58th Street, and is a NYC landmark. The giant Bobby the Toy Soldier by the entrance is very welcoming, and a great photo opportunity. They have lots of interactive activities including a dance – on piano; the same one Tom Hanks danced on, in the movie Big.

3. Brooklyn Botanical Garden: There is a free program on Saturdays from 10-12, if there are no special events going on. Children under 12 are always free.

4. NY Aquarium, Brooklyn: As BOA customers the first weekends are free. Or, every Friday between 3:00pm until closing at 4:30pm, it’s pay as you wish. Children under 2 are always free. The kids are sure to enjoy exhibits with over 8000 animals from as far as Southwest Coast of Africa to the nearby Hudson River.

5. The Jewish Museum: Children Under 12 are always free. They have Free Saturdays from 11am to 5:45pm. In addition, as BOA customer the first weekends of every month is free. Kids 3-10 can enjoy the interactive, Archaeology Zone. Here the kids can discover what happens to the artifacts once they are unearthed and brought to the labs for analysis.

6. Children Museum of Art: On Thursdays from 4-6pm, it’s Pay as you wish. The art work by young people from 50 different countries and some adults all geared towards children is sure to spike their interest in art.

7. Skating Rinks: The admission to Bryant Park Ice Skating Rink is free. However the skate rentals are $12 each. If you are visiting family / friends you can always borrow theirs, that’s what we do! The South Street Seaport – Seaport Ice Admissions is only $5, and $7 (cash only) for skate rental. Ice skating at Rockefeller Center, this is a great winter season experience in NYC. The admission is only $5, Monday – Thursday 11:30am to 1:00pm.

8. NY Hall of Science: This is located at Flushing, Queens, and is free for BOA customers on the first weekend of every month. September through June admission is Free on Fridays 2-5pm, and Sundays 10-11am. Kids can explore and enjoy the hands on science and technology exhibits.

9. Story times: No matter where you are, kids always enjoy story time; and a little downtime for you. Most Barnes & Noble bookstores offer story times for different kid’s age group. Time and days will vary by location. You also want to check it by the local library close to where you are staying. Usually story times last about 30 minutes, with stories, songs, coloring or some arts and crafts. The best part is that it’s always free!!

10. Coney Island Beach: People usually don’t come to New York for its beaches. However this beach located in Brooklyn, offers the combined fun of a 3 mile boardwalk, the not so common seashore Circus Sideshow, and an amusement park. You can also enjoy walking on the long pier.

Most people have heard of the popular Red Hat Society but does anybody really know what they actually do? Who are they and what exactly do they do? We are going to try and answer these questions for you. The main purpose of the Red Hat Society is networking for its members. They promote the women in the organization to have friendships with other members and also have fulfillment in their lives. The main theme is for everyone to enjoy freedom and fun.

The Society is not a sorority like some might think. Sororities have initiation where as the Red Hat Society does not. It also cannot be considered a voluntary service club. The plain fact is that it is an organization for women. The hierarchy of membership within the Society is as follows. The founder of the local chapter is called the “Queen” and all members are caller the “Red Hatters”. Each member over the age of 50 wear red hats and purple clothes to all of the Society functions.

Women under the age of 50 are allowed to join as well and are called “Pink Hatters”. They wear pink hats and lavender clothing to the Society’s functions. When they turn 50 they will graduate to becoming a “Red Hatter” and will wear the red hats and purple clothing to functions.

There are many events that the Society members attend. All members always dress very elegantly in fun hats and other types of fashion accessories. One of the most popular accessories is the feather boa. There are a vast variety of events hosted by the Society. One of the groups favorites is a tea party. There are also larger regional parties that group together different chapters to host the events.

For the largest of events, the headquarters does the hosting. All Red Hat Society members are required to pay an annual fee for membership. For additional information about the organization please visit the company’s website.

Atlanta Ga – In today’s shrinking mortgage battlefield the industry giants are moving into smaller markets at a rapid pace like never before. Nationally, the real estate market is considered to be a “buyers market” creating great deals for the would-be home purchaser. Smart investors are buying homes like crazy right now because they understand that the market will eventually return. The same is true for savvy mortgage companies as well.

The near demise of subprime lending and tightened competition have seriously affected the budget of mid to small sized lenders. The problem is that most of your medium sized lenders are not in a position to expand their operations and the smaller ones are closing their doors all together. This has left the “door” wide open for “big boys” like Countrywide, Bank of America and others to go on the market share offensive.

These mortgage giants are moving deeper into the local market place due to the void left by collapsing companies. Traditionally these companies wouldn’t risk offending their local correspondents with direct advertising in the local markets with the saturation level we are seeing. Correspondent lending represents a large portion of their business. However the local correspondent lending is down dramatically which offers justification for moving into these once taboo smaller markets. The next wave of advertising appears to be of the “no closing cost” variety.

Both Countrywide and Bank of America (BOA) have launched their new “no fees or closing cost” campaigns. At Lendfast.com we have always warned our readers to be wary of marketing “gimmicks” that sound good in advertising but are less attractive in black and white. No closing cost loans are not free, in most cases just the opposite. Attorneys do not work “for free”. Appraisers, closing agents, escrows, prepaid interest and state and local taxes do not go away when you close a “no closing cost mortgage”. If you do not include the fees in the closing cost the lender must pay them. If the lender pays them they will sell you an interest rate above what you qualify for, period, end of story.

The last round of advertising “gimmicks” focused on low payments that were based on negative amortizing loans. Do you remember the ads that would say something like “$250,000 mortgage for only $475 per month”? These advertisements were very popular over the last 3 years and perpetuated by the larger mortgage companies, with the exception of Wells Fargo. This it one of the reasons that securitized loans are not performing well on the secondary markets and mortgage companies are in trouble. Too many people were put into bad loans and are losing their houses. When this happens the loans that are grouped and sold on the secondary market are sold at a loss as opposed to a profit. This causes banks to raise prices and close departments.

At lendfast we believe that the mortgage giants are good companies and would do well without having to repackage their products. No closing cost advertising is nothing more than putting a different bow on the same product they have been selling for years. Just to hit this point home, let’s think logically about the “no closing cost mortgage”. The inference is, that if the lender is “paying” the closing cost on the loans they close you are now receiving a better deal by way of lower closing cost. Doesn’t this mean the bank would have to dip into their profit to pay the closing cost causing them to earn less profit on the loans they originate? Recently Floyd Robinson at BOA has been quoted as saying this in reference to their employee pay plans:

“The compensation plans have not changed with this (no closing cost) product. I won’t get into how we compensate our associates. But we haven’t changed our methodology or the amounts based on this product.”

We at Lendfast can can tell you exactly how BOA and others compensate their associates, commission. If they have not changed how they compensate their commissioned associates it’s fair to assume they haven’t changed their profit level on their loans either. Remember the first rule of business, nothing is free and no one works for free.

Who are they?

Arteyu is a metalcore band from Orange County, California that was formed in 1998. The band consists of five guys, Alex Varkatzas, Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel, Marc McKnight, and Brandon Saller. Alex is lead vocal and lyricist, Dan and Travis play guitar, Marc is the bassist and Brandon plays the drums along with doing some vocals. The band was not originally named Atreyu, they were called Retribution until they found out about another band from Hemet, California had the name. The band got the name from the book/movie The Never-Ending Story.

Since the band’s beginning in 1998 they have had four studio albums released, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses in 2002, The Curse in 2004, A Death Grip on Yesterday in 2006 and Lead Sails Paper Anchor in 2007. Each of their four studio albums have sold about 200,000 copies each. They were on the Projekt Revolution tour with Linkin Park in 2008. They headlined along with Hawthorn Heights, 10 Years, and Armor For Sleep.

Flash Back 1998-2000

1998 – 2000 are known as Atreyu’s Independent Years. Back then, the band only consisted of four members: Alex, Dan, Brandon, and Kyle Stanley. This is around the time when the band changed its name, which was suggested by a friend named Scott Lloyd, also known as The Mess. In 1999, the band released their first album, an independent, seven track, EP album called Visions. The Album was only sold at their concerts. Their second album, a five track EP, under the underground label Tribunal Records.

Flash Back 2001- 2006

In 2001, the band finally signed with a big name record company called Victory Records, who seemed to favor young metalcore bands. In 2002, they released their first full-length studio album, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses. Around this time, the band introduced the drummer, Brandon, as another singer for the band. When their music video for Lip Gloss and Black appeared on the Headbangers Ball and Uranium in 2003, the band got some much-needed attention. The band’s second studio album, The Curse, was released in 2004 and sold about 300,000 copies.

After their second album release, Atreyu was featured on the sound track for Mr. and Mrs. Smith doing a cover of “You Give Love a Bad Name,” originally performed by Bon Jovi. The year 2006 brought with it the release of their third album, A Death Grip on Yesterday, which hit number 9 on the Billboard 200 and had 69,000 sales.

In the beginning of 2007, Atreyu signed with Hollywood Records for America along with making an international deal with Roadrunner Records. With the new label came the start of their fourth album, Lead Sails Paper Anchor. This album was met with mixed reviews because of the band’s new sound. Despite the bands new sound, it hit number 8 on the Billboard 200. Marc recently posted a blog stating that Atreyu would be recording their fifth album in the early spring of 2009.

FHA Closing costs differ from conventional mortgages by the amount the lender can charge and the amount of insurance coverage homeowners are required to have. FHA mortgages are the last of the government sponsored mortgages. Fannie and Freddie started out as a government charter but privatized over a decade ago. Since FHA is government operated, there are specific safeguards which have been designed to protect borrowers from paying too much closing costs. However, as is the case with most government programs, there’s loopholes.

When lenders and brokers close a loan, they all incur cost during the process. These costs are passed along to the borrower in the form of higher rates, or closing costs that are added directly to the closing statement (HUD). In the past, lenders have been known to be very liberal when applying their fees; these extra charges are called “junk fees.” Before you apply, you should insist that the lender disclose their fees on a form called good faith estimate (GFE, you can print a blank form from the link below.)

If you look at your GFE you will see a grouping of fees on the left hand side. Each fee is labeled 801, 802, and so on. These are the lenders fees. FHA has strict guidelines pertaining to the fees that lenders are allowed to charge when closing a loan. Unfortunately, they are very open-minded on the amount of discount points and origination points that they allow lenders to charge.

Lenders are allowed to charge one origination point and two discount points plus the “usual and customary” third party closing costs that FHA deems relevant. If you combine those fees with the additional money that the lenders can earn from “marking-up” the interest rate; lenders could make as much as $12,000 profit on a $200,000 loan.

In all fairness, most lenders don’t fleece their customers like this, however some do. If you are considering taking out an FHA mortgage I advise you to look at your good faith estimate carefully. If you see discount points listed in the “800″ block of numbers do not close your loan. Some lenders will give very compelling arguments as to why they need to charge them, don’t believe it. By disallowing the lender to use discount points, you have effectively forced them to keep their closing costs in-check.

Another difference in charges that you will see over conventional mortgages pertains to the insurance each agency requires when taking out the loan. Conventional mortgages (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac) will allow borrowers to forgo the mortgage insurance if the loan is less than 80% of the appraised value. Not so with FHA, when you take out an FHA mortgage you will be forced to have mortgage insurance regardless of the loan to value. The exception is when you take out a 15 year mortgage, if your loan is less that 90% of the value of the home you can forego the monthly mortgage insurance.

Also, FHA charges an up front mortgage insurance premium (MIP). This is a one time, lump sum that is added on top of your loan. The MIP is calculated at 1.5% of the mortgage’s loan amount, i.e. a $100,000 mortgage would become a $101,500 loan amount. This premium is refundable on a prorated basis but, the formula that is used to calculate it is stored in the same warehouse that Indiana Jones keeps his worldly treasures.

When you begin to add up the differences between FHA closing costs and conventional mortgages, it would appear that FHA mortgages have the higher closing. However, it really depends on what your specific circumstances are as to whether or not an FHA mortgage is right for you. If you have good credit and a low loan to value, a conventional mortgage is definitely the best road to take. Even if your loan to value is a little high, you may still want to consider a conventional mortgage. A conventional mortgage charges PMI just like an FHA loan does, however it can be easily removed one the home falls below 80% loan to value, unlike FHA mortgage insurance.

On the other hand, if you have average credit and a higher loan to value FHA becomes the clear winner when choosing the most beneficial loan. The most important reason is that FHA is not a credit score driven product. FHA is a common-sense loan, meaning your credit score doesn’t have a bearing on your ability to get approved. FHA looks at the property, the income, the job stability and the overall responsibility the borrower has exercised in the last year. Of course there are more guidelines, but you get my point. Not to mention that FHA allows home buyers to put as little as 3% down when buying a home.
