This article is about “Karl Wiesentha”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Karl Wiesentha”:

Not long ago in the Freudian nomenclature the term forgiveness would seem out of place, but in recent years psychology has been changing, and forgiveness is an interesting example of that change. A number of psychologists now argue that healing of such wounds as child abuse for example is impossible as long as the victim is unwilling to forgive. 1(M. Scott Peck; psychologist) A case in point of a victim who was at one time unwilling to forgive, or unable to, is Simon Wiesenthal, the author of 2 The Sunflower, On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness.

Wiesenthal is a Jew who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. One day he was taken from his work and brought by a nurse to the bedside of a dying SS member. The murderer wanted to confess all of his crimes and obtain absolution from a Jew, and the nurse was asked to bring him one, any Jew, Simon was chosen.

After the desperate dying SS member speaks to Wiesenthal about all of the horrible things he’s done to the Jewish people, and he confesses he regrets doing, he begs Simon for forgiveness, not knowing who he was. Knowing he was a Jew was all that mattered then. Faced with his choices Wiesenthal chooses to leave the SS members bedside without speaking. The SS member begged, and he did not try to justify his crimes, knowing that he deserved death, but Wiesenthal never said a word to him. Should this murderer have been forgiven? He certainly did not deserve compassion, or mercy, for these would never be granted from an SS member to a Jew.

Though it may be difficult, depending on our different circumstances, we should still try to grasp how necessary and liberating forgiveness can be, even for Wiesenthal when faced with the dying SS member, who murdered women and children. Being unforgivable enslaves the one who can’t forgive, and this conceives hate, where there is never any justice.

We must remember that murderers were not born as so, and Wiesenthal explains this well in his own words. Years later, after the war had ended, Wiesenthal spoke to the SS members’ mother, where he learned that his name was Karl. Wiesenthal writes, 3 “Karl had certainly been a ‘good boy. But a graceless period of his life had turned him into a murderer.” (Sunflower 95) Lower on this same page he wrote, “I reflect that people like him are still being born, people who can be indoctrinated with evil.”

When someone is so full of hate, one cannot expect that they will accept any ones forgiveness, because their hearts have grown so cold. Is there a possibility that the most evil of people can be forgiven? Is it even right to grant forgiveness to Karl, even if he did confess that he was wrong and sorry for the horrible crimes that he committed? We see when reading The Sunflower (54-55) that the sorrow Karl felt was genuine and he would never be able to forgive himself. So should Wiesenthal have had mercy, and told this man that he does not resent him anymore, and that although Karl is guilty of being a horrible person, he does not detest him? The killer would still have to live his few remaining days in misery over the horrible crimes he had committed, having nightmares till he took his last breath. There are people who would say that this punishment is enough. Why would Wiesenthal hold onto this hate anyway? Does he want his inner wounds to continue hurting? Does he want to remain a victim? If he desires healing, the only way to receive this would be by forgiving. But how can he forgive such a man, who slaughtered his people and tortured them?

4 Harold S. Kushner is Rabbi Laureate of Temple Israel in Natrick, Massachusetts. He is also an author. His comments about forgiveness directed to The Sunflower are very influential. He says, “Forgiving is not something we do for another person, as the Nazi asked Wiesenthal to do for him. Forgiving happens inside us. It represents a letting go of the sense of grievance, and perhaps most importantly a letting go of the role of victim. For a Jew to forgive the Nazis would not mean, God forbid, saying to them ‘What you did was understandable, I can understand what led you to do it and I don’t hate you for it.’ It would mean saying ‘What you did was thoroughly despicable and puts you outside the category of decent human beings. But I refuse to give you the power to define me as a victim. I refuse to let your blind hatred define the shape and content of my Jewishness. I don’t hate you; I reject you.’ And then the Nazi would remain chained to his past and to his conscience, but the Jew would be free.” Kushner has the right idea.

Is there a time where to forgive someone might be wrong? Some people would say yes, forgiveness can be wrong. 5 This is how Maj. Gen. U.S Army Officer, Sidney Shachnow felt after he read The Sunflower. He says, “Simon Wiesenthal was right in not granting forgiveness, for two reasons. First, he did not have the moral right to do so, and second this savage did not deserve it. He stepped over the boundary where forgiveness is possible. That SS officer should take up his case with God. I personally think he should go to hell and rot there. I doubt very much that my God would grant him forgiveness. After all, what does it take to serve in hell?” (243) People like General Shachnow, who say forgiveness can be wrong, are they not people who try to justify their hate? When you don’t forgive someone, doesn’t this mean you resent what they’ve done to you? The unforgiven is obviously regarded with strong ill will, and this defines hate, so when you resent someone this means you hate them also. And when you hate someone you are a murderer in a “sense”, because in your heart the one you hate, and choose to resent is dead to you. There is no justifying the crimes of the SS member Karl, who sought after forgiveness from Wiesenthal, but is there a just reason that Wiesenthal had not to forgive this man? The definition for just is being right in law and ethics, fair minded, and having good intention. In a world where violence seems to be ever increasing, can any person truly afford to hate or not forgive anybody?

Is there a just reason to forgive Karl, or any killer Nazis? Is there a possibility of unity between a Nazi and a Jew? Certainly not, because a Nazi hates a Jew, and a Jew can never trust a Nazi. Just perhaps though, an unjust treated man can accept an apology from a sincerely sorry man, who is on his death bed. There’s no doubt that many Germans’ encouraged hate towards the Jews’ during World War II, especially the SS members of the Nazi Party, of whom Karl was a part of. 6 On August 15, 1935, in Berlin thousands of Germans gathered at a mass rally in order to listen to antisemitic speeches and to hear of a future Germany cleansed of Jews. There were two banners that read: “The Jews Are Our Misfortune” and “Women and girls, the Jews are your ruin.” (Daniel Jonah Goldhagen) 7 The Jews were not even slaves in the traditional manner, because slaves are not supposed to be socially dead, they are depended on for production and even honor. (Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, Hitler’s Willing Executioners 168-169) Many times slaves lived within society, and had social relations and ties to the oppressors. There is certainty that to the majority of Germans, the Jews were socially dead. All they wanted from the Jews was their suffering and death; there was no other purpose for them. These Germans were so prideful that they thought of themselves as the ultimate race, and their arrogance and longing for power caused many of them to become evil. They believed that they were super humans, perhaps like Greek gods of mythology. The Greek gods who were selfish beings that used humanity for basically entertainment, and usually cared very little about their problems, because the humans were not comparable to them; In this way many Germans were trying to brainwash their fellows into believing that other human beings apart from them were of little importance when compared to the German race. And the Jews were thought of as sub humans. The Nazis during World War II, were worse then the gods of Greek mythology because they planned on being rid of all other perceived lesser races of human beings, starting with the Jews. 8 Their ideology claimed that members of the master race could be created in a methodical way, and could just as easily advocate the methodical extermination of all lesser races. There was a pamphlet put out by the SS command that described the Jew in these words: 9 “From a biological point of view he seems completely normal. He has hands and feet and a sort of brain. He has eyes and a mouth. But, in fact, he is a completely different creature, a horror. He only looks human, with a human face, but his spirit is lower than that of an animal. A terrible chaos runs rampant in this creature, an awful urge for destruction, primitive desires, unparalleled evil, a monster, and subhuman.” (Tom Segev, Soldiers of Evil 80-81) Can a German, who believes like this, be forgiven by a Jew, who they don’t even consider to be human? If these SS members think that they are super humans, then why would they ever accept forgiveness from a petty creature that is less than an animal? It seems that the only way an SS soldier would even ask for forgiveness from a Jew is if he realized that his beliefs about them were wrong. The SS member would have to be convinced that Jews were human beings, not less than animals, but equal to a German, before he could ask a Jew for forgiveness.

The apology would have to be man to man, not Nazi to a Jew, or a god to a creature. When Karl confessed his crimes to Wiesenthal, and sought after his forgiveness, what he was saying was, “I am not better than you, and I am guilty of killing innocent human beings, not creatures of horror full of unparalleled evil.” In fact the realization that Karl came to while he was dying in misery was that he was the different creature, a horror with a human face, with a terrible chaos running rampant inside him. He was the monster and subhuman, not the Jews. It’s truly ironic that when Karl begged Wiesenthal to forgive him, he knew that he was the one who was less human then the Jew. So the position Wiesenthal was truly in was that he had his enemy dying before him, and admitting that he was not superior in any way to a Jew. This enemy gave Wiesenthal a respect that was unimaginable coming from a Nazi directed to a Jew. He needed something desperately from someone his peers would consider to be a worthless creature, but who Karl now saw as a savior. The enemies pride was gone and he knew that he was going to die a worthless creature of destruction and death. Imagine a Greek god asking a human being to forgive him of his sins, and confessing to this man that he was worthless in his sight, hardly comparable to the greatness of a human, because a human has a soul. Well, Karl may have felt like he gained much when he first put on his SS uniform, but what did this profit him, if he traded his soul? He was dying with nothing, so in knowing this why couldn’t Wiesenthal be the better “person” and grant him forgiveness in the proper manner? Perhaps he could have said, “You are not even worth hating, for you have ruined yourself, and you will die knowing that you were a killer for Hitler, nothing more. So, I truly pity you and I am sorry for you. Because although you will be buried with family and friends mourning over you, and a beautiful sunflower will be planted over your grave, you will still die knowing that you chose to be a murderer, and a monster. I will probably leave with a painful death and be buried in a shallow grave along with the rest of my people, and no person will care or remember us, but at least I will die knowing I am a man, and not a monster. I cannot speak on behalf of all the other Jews, whom you have murdered or made to suffer, and there is no justifying your crimes to them, but I forgive you for the pain you’ve caused me. I will no longer allow myself to be emotionally affected by you, or any other member of the SS. I choose to not hate you, because I see you as a pitiful creature that has nothing to hope for, and this is how I would have seen you if you were still killing us in your SS uniform. You were not only blind, and a lost child, but you were already dead years ago. Because you see, when you chose to join the SS Nazis you gave your life and soul to Hitler, and he used your members to do his bidding. Every time you took a life you lost more of your own, and you lost more of your soul, because you were constantly giving more of yourself to Hitler’s will. My life has never really been taken, nor will it ever be, for I do not hand over my life to anyone in regards to what I know is morally wrong and damaging to my soul. However when I leave this world, I believe I will die in peace now. Thanks for showing me that there is still hope for humanity, and unity, even between a monster and a man, or even a German and a Jew. Goodbye now.”

Could Wiesenthal have rightly forgiven the SS member Karl? Whether, or not he could have is irrelevant now. People have had much time to think about this situation that Wiesenthal was in, and meditate on the choices that could have been made in the room where the dying SS member laid. We must not forget though that Wiesenthal was the one who truly faced the mire and torture that these SS members had put people through. We could never truly know what we would have done, or said, if we were in Wiesenthal’s place. There is certainty though that he didn’t make a wrong choice by keeping silent, because his response to Karl, or lack there of, was left open for interpretation, and Karl took his last breath knowing that a Jew had listened to his confession. Karl knew this man left knowing in his heart that the apology he heard was sincere, and this is well enough. If we are grasping for an understanding of forgiveness, remember the question that we can be thankful Wiesenthal has left for us. We can ask ourselves, “What would I have done?” Perhaps there should now be another question you have after reading this, “Can you truly justify a reason to hate, or not forgive anybody?”

This article is about “Justice membership club number”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Justice membership club number”:

No neighbourhood portrait of Toronto’s Beach community could ever be complete without one of the true institutions in the area: the Balmy Beach Club, a private social and athletics club founded in 1905, has been a real anchor of the local sports and recreational scene, and continues to thrive today as a favourite gathering place for many of its members. During a recent interview with Glenn Cochrane, he took me briefly into the Balmy Beach Club and stated that “this is the best patio on Toronto’s waterfront – bar none”. When I headed out on the patio and saw the sweeping 180 degree panorama of Lake Ontario with a view towards Toronto’s skyline, I simply had to agree. Combined with a beautiful setting inside a historic neighbourhood, surrounded by gorgeous mature trees, one would be hard-pressed to find a more perfect urban oasis in Toronto than the Balmy Beach Club.

To find out more about this revered institution I set up an interview with Ken Bingham, long-time member of the Balmy Beach Club, and the official historian of this institution. The Balmy Beach Club, a non-profit organization, is a social and athletic club that came into existence in 1905. It has about 1400 members in two membership categories: the social membership provides access to upstairs facilities, including the bar, lounge, patio and banquet hall. Social members are able to attend a wide variety of functions, for example the Superbowl Party, a Glen Miller Dance, Rock Star Karaoke, a Martini Night and many more. Members in the social category also participate at no extra cost in lawn bowling, volleyball and most social functions run through the club. In addition, members are eligible to rent the banquet facility for private functions such as birthday parties, anniversaries and weddings. Many local community organizations also use the club to hold special events or fundraisers.

The fitness membership includes the privileges of the social membership and additionally provides access to the fitness room, the squash courts, sauna and change rooms on the lower level of the building. With this level of membership it is feasible to join the canoe, hockey or rugby sections of the club. Sports such as curling, tennis, football and lawnbowling are offered as well through the club.

For more than a century the Balmy Beach Club has been noted for its athletic teams which started out with canoeing and lawn bowling, and were later expanded to add other activities such as curling, hockey, squash and volleyball. Ken explained that the land for the Club was donated by Sir Adam Wilson, an Ontario Chief Justice in the second half of the 19th century. The land for the Balmy Beach Park was incorporated in 1903.

The first club house, a beautiful two level structure with large wooden verandas, opened in 1905, but it unfortunately burnt to the ground in 1936. Another club house was built, but again fire struck in 1963. The current club house dates back to 1965.

While Ken was grabbing me some extra papers with historic information I took the opportunity to talk with Chris Buckley, the current president of the club, now serving his second term. Chris works full time in sales, and in his spare time he oversees the club and chairs the board. He informed me that this is a volunteer position, and that a Board of Directors is responsible for the main athletic sections (canoeing, lawn bowling, volleyball, hockey, rugby and squash). Chris further explained that membership is actually rather reasonable for a private club: the social membership is $260 a year while the fitness or athletic membership costs $420 per year. An initiation fee of $300 applies to first-time members, but that fee is sometimes waived during special promotions.

Chris Buckley indicated that he is very interested in increasing the membership of the Club since a larger roster of members also helps to defray the costs of running the club. Sometimes the Balmy Beach Club holds open houses and invites the community at large to get to know the club, its facilities and recreational opportunities. He indicated that the club is very open and welcoming, and has members from as far away as Brampton and Mississauga, but there are also a number of international members who reside in the United Kingdom, in the United States, in Australia and New Zealand.

The sports teams themselves run various fundraising events to cover the costs of insurance and other necessary funds for their sports activities. A very popular fundraising event is a volleyball tournament, and participants often show up outfitted in funny costumes. One time a team was dressed up as gladiators, another time they were pretending to be waiters with bowties from the “Goof” , the affectionately nicknamed historic Garden Foods Chinese restaurant just up the street.

The club itself also gets involved in charitable activities on behalf of the Beach community. The club sponsors local high school baseball, lacrosse and hockey teams, and club members also provide a scholarship to one male and one female student at Malvern Collegiate. During the summer the club runs a canoe/kayak day camp for about 300 children. The linkages to the community are strong.

I inquired into general information about the club, and Chris informed me that the opening hours are Monday to Sunday from 6 am to 1 am. He chuckled and said “the bar closes when the president goes home”. New developments are also in the works: the city wants to build additional volleyball courts on the sandy beach right in front of the club. Toronto has actually become known as the beach volleyball Mecca in Canada with a variety of leagues and tournaments encompassing hundreds of teams that are run out of Ashbridges Bay. The Balmy Beach Club was actually were it all started, and Canadian beach volleyball celebrities Mark Heese and John Child both used to play at the Balmy Beach Club. Heese and Child participated in three Olympic Games: the team won the bronze medal in Atlanta (1996), came in 5th in Sydney (2000) and 5th again in Athens (2004).

World caliber athletes have been coming out of the Balmy Beach Club for a long time. International rugby players have been developed at the Balmy Beach Club, and Chris adds that there are eight senior players that played on the Canadian national rugby team, while six Balmy Beach junior players are currently playing for Canada. Several paddlers from the Balmy Beach Club have won Olympic medals in kayaking and canoeing as well.

What Chris really enjoys about being a member at the Balmy Beach Club is that the club is very inclusive and includes members of all backgrounds and age groups. He enjoys being friends with 18-year old youngsters while he also appreciates the older members, many of whom have been part of this club for several decades. He said it is very sad when some of the older members pass away, and the entire club mourns the departure of long-term club members. He adds that he has football pictures from high school that depict three generations of Balmy Beach Club members.

Chris had to go and handed me back to Ken, and we set off on a tour of the building. Ken first took me into a large multi-purpose room on the Western side of the building which houses a variety of plaques and sports jerseys. This is where most of the social functions are held, and occasionally the room is also used for indoor lawn bowling. Ken indicated that the Balmy Beach Football team won the Grey Cup twice in 1927 and 1930. Several wooden plaques highlight the Canadian champions in canoeing / kayaking, lawn bowling and football/rugby that came out of the Balmy Beach Club. The long lists are impressive.

One plaque in particular honours the Olympians that emerged from this club. One person that appears four times on this plaque is a gentleman by the name of Jim Mossmann, who, as Ken explained, was the Canadian Olympic Canoe Coach in four different Olympic games. In addition to paddling sports, curling is another sport offered by the Balmy Beach Club. The club fields twelve teams that all play in their own league at the East York Curling Club.

Lifetime club members also get honoured here, and some active members have been with the club for 60 or more years. The Balmy Beach Club truly provides social and recreational opportunities for an entire lifetime, and its members have a deeply felt loyalty to this institution. Many a courtship was started at the Balmy Beach Club, and I bet that scores of Beachers were born as a result of a romantic connection that started at the Balmy Beach Club.

Just outside the multi-purpose room is an area full of plaques, the Balmy Beach Club Hall of Fame, honouring some of the distinguished athletes from the club. In a hallway just to the left of the entrance hall there are a number of certificates, including original certificates from the 1920 Olympic Games in Paris, the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, the 1952 Games in Helsinki as well as the 1960 Olympic Games in London, all donated by Balmy Beach Club members who were actual participants in these historic competitions.

Ken pointed out a picture on the opposite side of the wall showing a group of lawn bowlers on opening day in 1905. A picture of hockey players dating back to 1913 also illustrates the long history of this institution. Ken explains that the original sports at the Balmy Beach Club were lawn bowling and canoeing, and all the other sports were added gradually over the years. We then headed downstairs where Ken showed me two squash courts as well as the well-equipped fitness room that is available to the fitness members. Wherever you look, walls are adorned with historical pictures, certificates, medals and plaques; there simply is not enough wall space at the Balmy Beach Club to display all the significant mementos that have accumulated over the years.

Our official tour had concluded and Ken took me back upstairs. In addition to the club’s history I was also interested in some of the individuals that make this club run. I had already talked to the president, Chris Buckley, and I thought I’d find out a bit more about the historian himself. Ken Bingham was born right in the area and spent 25 years of his life living on Fernwood Park. He joined the Balmy Beach Club in 1950 and is also one of the lifetime members. Prior to his retirement he used to work at Inco’s head office, a company that also generously sponsored some of the trophy cases, a big TV screen and several filing cabinets for the club.

Ken introduced me to two long-term Balmy Beach Club members and handed me over to his colleagues as he had to go. The famous Jim Mossmann, four-time Canadian Olympic coach, has been a member for an unbelievable 72 years. Naturally he was also inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for his athletic achievements. Today he says he lives in a condo close by and mainly comes down here to socialize.

Another long-term member, John McCullough, was just inducted as a lifetime member last night. He has been a member since 1943. His friends were joking and referred to him as a walking encyclopedia. John says that today he spends much of his time golfing, lawn-bowling and curling. He has been retired for 23 years, and the Balmy Beach Club has become an important anchor for his social life.

The friendly face behind the bar is Jamie Reynolds, also a Balmy Beach Club member and the maintenance manager. Jamie is also responsible for ordering the supplies, the drinks and snacks for the bar. The Balmy Beach Club is a licensed establishment and serves quick snacks and pre-made sandwiches. Jamie has been a member since 1964, started off paddling, then played rugby from 1967 to 1987. Today Jamie is a talented lawn bowler. He explains that the natural sequence of sports at the Balmy Beach Club starts with paddling, then moves on to rugby and hockey, and finally ends with lawn bowling in people’s later years. An entire lifetime of sports and social activities is available at the Balmy Beach Club.

Another true fixture at the Balmy Beach Club is Barb Kelly, who works part-time in the club’s administration since she retired from her long-term job with a paper mill. Barb Kelly is also a life-time member and joined the club in the mid 1970s. She has been on the Board of Directors for the last 12 years and was the first female on the board. Originally the Balmy Beach Club was closed to women as there were no lockers or showers for females, and finally opened its doors to females in the 1970s.

Barb has been paddling since she was a child, and on May 4, 2007 she will be inducted in the Balmy Beach Sports Hall of Fame as an athlete (she is an outstanding lawn bowler) and a major contributor of the club. Barb explained that eight times a year she runs a “Euchre Meat Roll” which is basically a fundraiser for her lawn-bowling team that involves a vacuum-packed piece of meat as a prize giveaway. Barb has participated in many dances and social events at the Balmy Beach Club since she was a young girl.

Last but not least I got a chance to meet the person who really runs the Balmy Beach Club: Charlene Provan is the General Manager of the club and is in charge of all operational matters which include staffing issues, facility rentals, administration, maintenance, volunteer coordination, security and well as set-ups and tear-downs for special events. Charlene mentioned that insurance costs in particular have risen incredibly over the last few years. Insurance now adds up to about $130.00 per player on the competitive rugby team. Canoeing/kayaking, on the other hand, requires expensive marine insurance. Charlene has worked here for eight years, and since she started insurance costs have actually tripled.

Charlene adds that the club is financially self-sufficient and has never asked for any funds from the city, who officially owns the land that the club is built on. She adds that the Balmy Beach Club is an important focal point for the community, a beautiful place to get away from it all, right here in the city. Charlene herself grew up in the Beach, attended local schools such as Williamson Road, Glen Ames and Malvern Collegiate Institute. She has raised her daughters here and for a number of years she worked at “Lido’s in the Beach”, a restaurant formerly owned by Lido Chilelli, founder of the Beaches Jazz Festival.

One of the things that Charlene has instituted at the club is a more inclusive policy. More than 30 years ago, the club was open to men only. After shower and locker facilities were installed for women, the club opened its doors to both genders. Things have changed substantially, and since Charlene arrived on the scene, she has introduced many family-friendly events such as Christmas parties, Easter egg hunts and Halloween events. Charlene has actively been working on broadening the appeal of the Balmy Beach Club and on making it accessible to a wider range of people. She has even added a wireless Internet connection to the club so members can come in and use their laptops from the comfort of their social club.

Considering all this history and the people behind it, the club is definitely the ‘Legend by the Lake”, and in Charlene’s words it is the “best kept secret in Toronto”.

This article is about “Difficult birthday song scores”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Difficult birthday song scores”:

On Sunday, February 1, we celebrate the 150th birthday of one of America’s most amazing composers. Bernstein? Copeland? Berlin? No, Victor Herbert. Who on earth was Victor Herbert?

Premier cellist; classical composer of string and orchestral music; conductor of 22nd Regiment Band (Gilmore’s Band); composer of 43 Broadway operettas; 3rd conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for 6 years, including their first concerts at NYC’s Carnegie Hall; composer of the 1911 American Opera (Natoma); one of seven founders of ASCAP; composer of the first original American film score (Fall of A Nation, 1916); lead lobbyist and champion of the 1909 Copyright law; extraordinary orchestrator; composer of popular song; composer of scared music for voice, chorus and orchestra; conductor of Victor Herbert Orchestra; first conductor to record for Edison and then The Victor Recording Company; composer for every Ziegfeld Follies from 1917 to 1924; a household name in America from 1890s into 1950s; and the first, and perhaps only, musician to win a libel suit against a NYC critic.

The far more pressing question is, “How could we ever forget?” As late as 1955, Edward N.Waters, Herbert biographer, assured his readers that, ” . . . America could never, would never forget.” So what happened?

Although born an Irishman and raised and educated in Germany and Austria, America took Victor Herbert to their hearts and claimed him for their own within six months of his arrival on our shores to play cello in the Metropolitan Opera Company’s orchestra.

His young wife, Therese Förester, had been hired as one of the 1886-87 season’s soprano leads and, quite simply, refused to sign her contract without a spot in the orchestra pit for her newly acquired husband. He quickly became one of America’s premier cellists from 1887 through 1905 when he gave up performing regularly.

Herbert began composing long before he left Europe and continued to create works for the cello, string quartets and orchestras soon after his arrival, performing his own composition with the Symphony Society of New York, Walter Damrosch conducting, in 1887.

He began his conducting career in 1888 with his own orchestra, composed and premiered a major Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 30 (the hearing of which greatly influenced Dvorák’s own famous cello concerto) in March of 1893, became conductor of Gilmore’s Band in November of 1893, wrote his first operetta in November of 1894, and he’d only just begun.

Everything Victor ever turned his hand to was a masterful success. One would be hard pressed to find another American musician who excelled in as many different aspects of the world known as “popular music.”

Even more importantly, Victor Herbert is as much a part of American Heritage as apple pie. For decades, if you had a piano in your home, you had Mr. Herbert’s sheet music on it, and if you didn’t, you did your best to rush to catch his fine band on parade or his orchestra on tour.

There are Herbert melodies galore that you would recognize instantly including “Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life,” “March of the Toys,” “I’m Falling In Love With Someone,” “Toyland,” “Italian Street Song,” “Gypsy Love Song,” “Just A Kiss In The Dark,” “Kiss Me Again,” and “Indian Summer” – to name but a few.

A master of melody and orchestration (he did all his own – an almost unheard of skill in recent decades) Herbert contributed to, if not laid, the very foundation of American popular song. Cohen, Kern, Berlin, Rodgers – all follow Herbert. After each of his Broadway operettas, audiences always left the theater humming. In fact, that saying was probably first pronounced in reference to Herbert.

By the time his career was cut short by his unexpected passing in May of 1924, he had amassed 43 Broadway operettas; 3 operas; several film scores; massive orchestral and choral works, conducted both the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Victor Herbert Orchestra, become the first major orchestral recording artist, championed the rights of the composer and established himself as a household name across the nation.

So what happened to this American wonder? Why don’t we still perform these marvelous operettas if they were so good? The answer lies in America’s penchant for weak librettos. Victor Herbert never found his John Gilbert (British librettist of Gilbert & Sullivan fame), but neither did the rest of America’s composers until Oscar Hammerstein, II teamed with composer Jerome Kern and both burst onto the scene with Show Boat in 1927.

Fortunately, there is a growing revival and appreciation of Mr. Herbert’s music all across the country as more and more ensembles re-discover the most joyful musical giant America has ever produced. A quick internet search will connect one with all sorts of new materials, research and performances of this thoroughly American artist.

You can add to this revival if you have an orchestra in your community. Simply ask them to program at least one Herbert song this year in honor of this 150th year milestone! Should you find yourself in the audience, you will find it difficult not to smile, hum, and tap your foot.

America in 2009 is truly in great need of joyful, beautiful music! Happy Birthday, Mr. Herbert!

This article is about “Zumba song starts with violin”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Zumba song starts with violin”:

When you consider ballroom dancing, you probably consider slow music being played by a violin. Hundreds of years ago, your options would have been very accurate. Ballroom dancing was originally carried out to acoustic guitars, violins, and cellos. This type of music was proper at the time, as most ballroom dances were slow and very precise. However, as time passed and ballroom dancing gained popularity, the music changed right along with the dances.

Gone are the days of the mellow acoustic strings; these days, a variety of music is made use of in ballroom dancing. The music depends stringently on the kind of dance being executed. In ballroom dancing, there are over ten traditional dances with many more variations, so obviously the music will differ for each one. Here is a probe at some examples of music and sound tracks suitable for each dance style.

The paso doble is a Spanish dance that demonstrates the bullfighter’s bravery and agility. Often, the woman represents the matador’s cape. The paso doble is a very intense and dramatic dance, so the music selected should fit the scene. Virtually all of the time, the music for this particular dance is instrumental, but fast-paced with a dramatic appeal. The Spanish culture should be retained mind, so choose music with horns, maracas, and acoustic guitars.

The jive is a fun and upbeat dance that allows the dancers to state their careless personality. The moves are quick with lots of fast kicks and spinning or twirling of the woman. A good number of the jive is performed in a stationery place and doesn’t involve on the move on the dance floor. Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” is a great example for the jive, as is the obvious song, “Born to Hand Jive”. Any song that follows this kind of tempo is suitable for the jive.

The quickstep is a compounding of the swing and the jive. The steps are very quick and movements must be fast and concise. This dance is usually best carried out to instrumental music. two melodies most commonly employed for the quickstep are “Big Band”, “Flash”, and “Spoonful of Sugar”. These songs have a cheery and upbeat tempo and have a 1940′s dance club appeal.

The foxtrot is one of the most popular ballroom dances, although it is in addition one of the most tough to learn. The foxtrot is a very smooth dance with fluid movements, and the movements are “slow, quick, quick, slow”. This dance is thought of as elite and one of the most formal, so choosing music can be quite a challenge. Take into consideration that the music should not be very fast, but should follow in addition to the steps. Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” and Shakira’s “Underneath Your Clothes” are excellent selections for the foxtrot.

Although not the last of the ballroom dances, the cha cha is a very lively and even flirty style of dance. It is also high-speed and combines a large number of hip action with quick footsteps. This dance is one of the easier styles of ballroom dance when it comes to choosing music. Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever” and Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” are ideal songs for dancing the cha cha.

Marathons have roots in ancient history, tracing their history back to the battles of ancient Greece. It is from here that we get one of the oldest athletic events, with a rich history and heritage that marathoners take pride in.

What is a Marathon?

The official length of long-distance foot races known as marathons is 42.195 kilometres. The history of marathons and the distance goes all the way back to ancient Greece. According to the legend of marathons, once the Greek had won the battle with the Persians, known as the Battle of Marathon, a runner named Pheidippides was sent to spread the news in Athens. Pheidippides is said to have arrived in Athens, reported the news and then died from exhaustion soon after.

The distance from the battleground to Athens was about 40 kilometres, which eventually evolved into the official distance for marathons of today. A number of authors have included the story of Pheidippides in several songs and poems, such as the works of Robert Browning. The poem composed by Browning was the inspiration of Michal Breal, who is the brains behind the organization of the 1896 Olympic Games. These games included a marathon.

In the marathons of today, a racecourse is set out by organizers to meet the required distance that was set in 1908 by the Olympic Games in London. According to the race, runners either begin all at the same time in one big massive start, separated by ability and gender, or sent out in waves.

The courses of marathons are typically left open for a specific length of time, generally for about four hours. Runners who do not complete the entire course are picked up and transported to the finish line. For marathons that are made up of a large group of inexperienced runners, the course is usually left open for a longer time so they are able to finish.

What is a Half Marathon?

Basically, a half marathon is half of a marathon run, which is often referred to as a mini-marathon. Half marathons are becoming more and more popular. Many times, people will take part in half marathons that are going on at the same time as full marathons. The difference between full marathons and half marathons is simple. A half marathon is about 21 kilometres in length.

It is easy to see why so many people are attracted to half marathons. These events do not require as much extensive training as full marathons. Often, several people get together to train for half marathons in groups in order to get ready for the 21K event. The majority of these races allow participants to register ahead of time, giving them time for sufficient training.

Popular Marathons

The most popular marathons around the world highlight the abilities of some of the world’s most skilled runners. In cities all around the world, runners come together to participate in these races.

Even though marathons are held all over the place, some marathons are better known than other races.

Some of the most popular marathons are:

The New York City Marathon – The New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world. More than two million people gather on the streets of New York City to watch this race. In addition, another three hundred plus million viewers join the fun by watching the television broadcast.

The London Marathon – The New York City Marathon was the inspiration for the London Marathon, which first took place in 1981. Even though twenty thousand runners applied to participate in the initial London Marathon, only around 7,700 or so were allowed to run in the race. The course has since changed, becoming flatter and faster.

The Berlin Marathon – The Berlin Marathon was first run in 1974 with only hundreds of participants. Now, the Berlin Marathon is the world’s second largest marathon. It is also known as one of the world’s fastest races as well.

This article is about “Zumba pattaya”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Zumba pattaya”:

This article is about “????? Beyonce ???????? pdf”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “????? Beyonce ???????? pdf”:

It was during her childhood that little Marie Grosholtz learned to become an artist and sculptor. Having honed her talent with the employer of her mother, she created her first wax figures in 1777 at the age of sixteen. The employer of her mother was an artist, physicist and physician Philippe Curtius. At the age of Twenty-four, the young woman married and became Madam Tussaud. Recognized for her talent in France, it was in England that the artist became famous. In London, Marie Tussaud has her own wax statue, a beautiful portrait.

The history of Madame Tussaud

Marie was a Marianne, a figure of the French Revolution. Her early accomplishments as an artist-sculptor hinted her ideas, her commitment. After participating in the exhibition projects of his mentor, the doctor Philippe Curtius, she began to make her own works by immortalizing writers and philosophers, in 1777 Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau in 1778. The rebel was sentenced to the guillotine, but through her artistic talent, she was fortunately spared. Her sentence proved very strange indeed she had to make death masks for beheaded. She had immortalized the faces of her friends died for the revolution.

In 1794, Marie inherited the figures of his mentor Philippe Curtius before becoming Madam Tussaud a year later. For her husband Francois Tussaud, she gave birth to two sons. The artist continued her work and decided to exhibit her collection in London in 1802, accompanied by her eldest son. Because of the war, she found herself sheltered in England where she continued to present her masterpiece in exhibitions. Permanently installed across the channel, Marie Tussaud chose London as the final destination. No more traveling exhibition in 1835, she then opened the Baker Street Bazaar to display her collections. The artist presented the figures of the revolutionaries and their murderers, staged in what would be called House of Horrors.

A multinational museum

In 1884, more than thirty years after the death of Marie Tussaud, the museum which displayed her works was moved to Marylebone Road, its current location. In 1926, after a fire that ravaged many works, the company Tussauds Group is created. After having pasted figurines melted by the flames, the museum was undergoing a veritable revolution. It became one of the most important tourist attractions of London. The company Tussauds then set out to conquer the world. Officially known as Madame Tussauds, wax museums are multiplying in the largest cities in the world such as Amsterdam to Las Vegas via New York and Hong Kong and Shanghai and Washington and Berlin and Los Angeles recently. A hugely successful multinational company, the Tussauds Group was bought out several times. In 2007, the buyer called Merlin Entertainments, which has invested one billion pounds.

In Hollywood, actors and film legends are immortalized at Madame Tussauds. Some of the cinema stars have their wax statue in several cities, like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nicolas Cage, Whoopi Goldberg and Marilyn Monroe. At Madame Tussauds, the singers also have right to glory. The legends as Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Madonna compete with young stars like Britney Spears or international Beyonce. Politicians are not forgotten by history when they are at Madame Tussauds, the example of Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, John Kennedy. Certainly, being chairman of a country deserves a statue, without political considerations.

The Nicolas Sarkozy, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Adolph Hitler have their figures in at least one of wax museums. In London, at the site of Madame Tussauds, the statues of more than 400 personalities are exhibited in the Hall of Fame. Usually, celebrities lend themselves gracefully to the opening of their statue in a wax museum as Madame Tussauds. There are some exceptions particularly among politicians who are more reticent. At Madame Tussaud’s, the value does not expect the number of years. It’s more than true for personalities from the world of film, song and sport. Roles of teenagers like Harry Potter or Troy Bolton from High School Musical have brought Daniel Radcliffe and Zac Efron in the temple of celebrity wax. Young champions such as Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton or footballer Wayne Rooney will access to glory soon.

To perform a full tour of Madame Tussauds, it takes about two hours. Through various events, visitors do not see the time passing. When you are hurry, you can go directly to your favorite star and be photographed with her. Simply place like a statue. More than a house of fame, the museum Madame Tussauds is not limited to offer entertainment. It opens a window on history by featuring characters from another generation.

This article is about “EZ Play music dont stop believing”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “EZ Play music dont stop believing”:

Over the past few years, more and more 80′s Theme Parties and even Wedding Receptions where the guests actually dressed up to go along with the décor have been popping up. They are totally a blast! Just picture it, people dressing punky as early Madonna, sunglassed and pant-less as Tom Cruise in Risky Business, and even as the zombie Michael Jackson, you cannot get better than that for guest interaction!

Having a theme-based wedding reception, or get together can really make things more fun for your next big party or event, too. This campy decade saw the rise of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran, and the King of Pop Michael Jackson thanks to the early music video-playing channel, MTV. If you choose to go this route, remember to word your invitations in exactly the same way, and tell everyone to come dressed as their favorite 80′s star. The pictures will be priceless!

Music Videos and television shows lead to the fashion industry, pushing black and white lace for the girls, ala The Material Girl, or pastel colored jackets with T-shirts or skinny ties, with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow for the guys like the guys from Duran Duran and Miami Vice.

Make sure to have plenty of jelly bracelets, fishnet gloves and punk wigs for those guests who will not be dressed appropriately. Quite often people will not want to dress up and look “silly,” but then wish they did after they see all the fun the other guests are having, once they get there. According to VH1, a station that still plays some music videos albeit early in the morning, below are some must hear 80′s song that you just like totally have to play!

1. Bon Jovi / “Livin’ on a Prayer” (1986)

2. Def Leppard / “Pour Some Sugar On Me” (1987)

3. Duran Duran / “Hungry Like the Wolf” (1982)

4. Michael Jackson / “Billie Jean” (1982)

5. Prince / “When Doves Cry” (1984)

6. Hall & Oates / “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” (1981)

7. Guns N’ Roses / Sweet Child O’ Mine (1987)

8. Madonna / “Like a Virgin” (1984)

9. Run-D.M.C. / “Walk This Way” (1986)

10. AC/DC / “You Shook Me All Night Long” (1980)

11. Journey / Don’t Stop Believing (1981)

12. Whitney Houston / “How Will I Know” (1985)

13. U2 / “With Or Without You” (1987)
