This article is about “Xti shoes”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Xti shoes”:

Price Price Price. The Canon Digital Rebel XTi can be had for around $600 today including a lens kit. That’s enough to make me sick, when I consider that I paid around $1000 for my first point and shoot digital about six years ago. This is a great price to enter into the world of SLR photography.

There is a ton of third party lenses that can be used on the Rebel XTi. The Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro is just one good example. You may even be able to buy the Sigma used, if you look around a bit. You can buy the Digital Rebel without the kit lens from Canon. Which is great, as it gives you the option to shop around for deals on different lenses like the Sigma model mentioned above.

Even though the XTi is the bottom of the Canon SLR model line, you can still use most of the Canon lenses manufactured. When and if you decide to move up to a new SLR, those lenses can move up with you.

This is a very popular camera, and has been since it was released. This gives a new purchaser plenty of advantages including lots of online forums discussing pros, cons, and tips. Plus, Canon has had plenty of time to fix any problems with the camera. There are also lots of used Rebel XTi’s for sale now, as their owners move up to more sophisticated machines.

At 10.1 mp, the Rebel provides plenty of resolution to allow for more cropping. Plenty more resolution than some of it’s competitors like the Nikon D40 6.1MP model.

The Rebel is a good entry level SLR for doing sports photography. Especially, if you use the money saved on the camera body for some good lenses. Something like the 135mm f2 L for indoor shooting, and the Sigma 100-300 f4 for outdoor shots.

The Canon Xti is a much faster shooter, and better in low light conditions than any point and shoot camera.

Better cameras than the Rebel are around, but they’re very hard to find. The Canon Rebel has been a great seller for number of years, and with good reason.

This article is about “Michael sandel justice juvenile justice”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Michael sandel justice juvenile justice”:

Few people know this, but our age is an amazing time for people who love philosophy.

When I was in college 30 years ago, philosophy was strictly an academic exercise and there were few resources available for people, like me, who view philosophy more as a way of life or avocation than as a job.

Today, however, all that has changed.

There are three or four excellent “magazines” about philosophy – such as Philosophy Now and The Philosopher’s Magazine – that are filled with funny, off-beat, irreverent articles about philosophical topics. A number of top-rate publishing houses, mostly in the UK, such as Routledge and Blackwell Publishing, produce books aimed at a general philosophical readership.

There are philosophy radio programs such as Philosophy Talk, coffee houses, salons, adult education classes and literally hundreds of websites for the interested reader. There are even philosophy comic books, such as LogiComix about the life of British logician Bertrand Russell. It’s simply amazing. It’s a golden age of philosophy, I think.

The irony, however, is that there is still no solid consensus on what, precisely, philosophy actually is. In its historical and etymological sense, philosophy is literally “love (philia) of wisdom (Sophia),” and that is always how I have looked upon it. Philosophy, for me, is the attempt to reflect upon experience in order to understand more about life and how we are to live. My aims, like those of Socrates, are primarily practical: I want to understand the world and myself to live better.

Today, there are three, perhaps four major “schools” or approaches to philosophy, each with their own journals, intellectual heroes and methodologies. It is one of the scandals of contemporary philosophy that these schools are somewhat incommensurable, meaning they are so different in their approaches and ideals they are almost incapable of speaking to one another. It’s as though organic chemistry and 17th century French literature are forced to share the same offices and pretend they are the same discipline (I exaggerate but you get the point).

The first approach may be called, for lack of a better word, Traditional Philosophy: this is the approach now largely taught only in Catholic universities. It is primarily historical in orientation, a “history of philosophy” style in which students study the thought of, say, the ancient Greeks, and Descartes, the British empiricists, Kant, Hegel and so on. There is very little attempt to think through how the thought of these philosophical greats can be reconciled. The idea appears to be that by working through all of these great thinkers, eventually the student will come to his or her own philosophical conclusions — although there is really no fixed “method” or approach given for doing so. I always think of this as the University of Chicago or Great Books approach. A variation of this approach is Catholic philosophy, including various schools of Thomism (such as the Transcendental Thomism of Merechal, Karl Rahner and, my guru, Bernard J.F. Lonergan)

The second major approach to philosophy today is what is known as Continental Philosophy. This is the philosophy that is most commonly taught in Europe and, again, in some Catholic universities in the U.S. In practice, it means primarily the philosophical systems of phenomenology, existentialism, so-called “critical theory” and their postmodern descendants. When I was in college, this is what I studied (in addition to traditional philosophy). We read the classic texts of phenomenology as well as such trendy philosophers as Jean-Paul Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, Karl Jaspers, Max Scheler, Edith Stein and others. Today, those names have largely been replaced by those of postmodern French thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jean Baudrillard, Jean-François Lyotard. While classical Husserlian phenomenology does attempt to “solve” major philosophical problems and actually be a descriptive science, in practice students of Continental Philosophy, like their Traditional Philosophy counterparts, spend much of their time studying the works of individual thinkers and writing papers on aspects of their thought. (There is a greater interest in Continental Philosophy in social and political questions, however.)

The third and allegedly dominant approach to philosophy today is Analytic Philosophy. This is the philosophy most commonly taught in the UK and in major U.S. universities. Built upon the infrastructure of British empiricists such as David Hume, Analytic Philosophy appeared in the early 20th century through the work of such thinkers as Bertrand Russell, Gottlob Frege, G.E. Moore and Ludwig Wittgenstein. When I was in college, I found Analytic Philosophy to be mostly unintelligible gibberish. The emphasis on symbolic logic and the solving of trivial intellectual “puzzles” was, to me, an absurd waste of time.

In the past few years, however, I’ve been reading more about Analytic Philosophy and I am now much more impressed. Analytic Philosophy has matured over the past few decades and is now more of a philosophical “style” than it is a collection of doctrines. The style is more like that of my hero, Bernard J.F. Lonergan, in that Analytic Philosophy is much more interested in actually solving philosophical problems than it is in clarifying the thought of past philosophers. Thus, Analytic Philosophy is characterized by a thematic, rather than a “history of philosophy,” approach. It uses or creates a specialized technical vocabulary to elucidate the various “options” available in any given philosophical issue — marshals the evidence in favor or against those options — and then attempts to actually “settle” the issue. It’s actually quite refreshing.

The only problem with Analytic Philosophy from the perspective of a traditional philosopher or “lover of wisdom” is that it’s still focused primarily on trivial problems or mere puzzles (perhaps because those are the easiest ones to “solve”). Academic analytic philosophy is often little more than “chloroform in print,” boring to the point of dispatching its readers into a catatonic stupor. The cure for this tedium has been, over the past several years, the appearance of those popular philosophy journals and publishing houses I mentioned earlier. Precisely because they are aiming at a wider audience, the popular philosophy authors have to turn their attention to the Big Issues that interest real people – and thus are forced by the market to abandon the tedium beloved by academics and use their philosophical skills to address topics people actually care about. An example of how wonderful this can be is a book I am reading right now, Michael Sandel’s magisterial Justice. It’s clear, concise, lays open the various options available on contentious issues, concerns serious subjects (what is justice?) and doesn’t resort to pretentious displays of symbolic logic to make its points.

These days, I mostly read good Catholic philosophy (such as can be found in the American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly or Method: A Journal of Lonergan Studies ) and “popular” analytic books such as Justice or those produced by Routledge. I still can’t read academic analytic philosophy journals. I tried subscribing to Faith and Philosophy, the (mostly analytic) journal of the Society of Christian Philosophers, but found it deadly dull and exhibiting the worst aspects of analytic pretentiousness. Here’s a sample, taken from John Turri’s essay, “Practical and Epistemic Justification in Alston’s Perceiving God” (July 2008, p. 290):

“Alston’s thesis is that putative perceptions of God often justify beliefs about God. A subject S has a putative perception of God when S has an experience e in which it seems to S that God appears to S as P. If, based on e, S forms the “M-belief” that God is P, then S has a justified belief that God is P. An M-belief is a belief that God is P, which is based on a putative perception of God. (I will often substitute ‘q’ for the proposition that God is P.) I dunno. My reaction to writing like that is the same as George Will’s: Just because life is absurd that doesn’t mean philosophy should be as well.

I don’t mean to pick on John Turri, whom I am sure is a great guy and a lot smarter than I am. But this sort of stuff is meant solely for professional philosophers in universities — and is largely what turns people off to philosophy as an academic discipline. If Socrates had spoken like that, they probably would have forced him to drink hemlock much earlier and philosophy would never have gotten off the ground.

This article is about “Buchanan street antiques”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Buchanan street antiques”:

For the second best shopping experience in the UK, look no further than Glasgow. The sheer number and variety of shops is surpassed only by London. Add to this varied shopping experiences – pedestrianised streets, shopping malls, markets and arcades – fabulous restaurants and eateries, and beautiful historic buildings all over the city; shopping in Glasgow isn’t just a trip to the shops – it’s an event!

Pedestrianised Street Shopping

Glasgow’s city centre boasts three outstanding pedestrianised shopping streets where you can browse, shop or just sit and people watch in safety. Buchanan Street, Argyle Street, and Sauchiehall Street are the focus of most of the shopping in Glasgow, each one with a different character. Pedestrianised at its eastern end, Sauchiehall Street is home to many well known outlets such as BHS, HMV and WH Smith, and smaller chain shops offering discount prices. There are also two shopping centres – the Sauchiehall Street Centre and the Savoy Centre which contains many small outlets selling artwork, jewellery, clothes, furniture and fast food.

Buchanan Street has taken over from Sauchiehall Street as Glasgow’s main shopping precinct. Aside from some major retailers such as Frasers and Borders, there are many smaller, designer shops and niche market boutiques. Its large width makes it perfect for street entertainers who perform all year round and add to Glasgow’s bustling, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Argyle Street is home to some of the UK’s biggest retailers – Marks and Spencer, HMV, Gap, Next, to name only a few.

All Under One Roof

Glasgow’s malls are a shopping Mecca. The Buchanan Galleries at the top of Buchanan Street is regarded as the best mall in the city centre. It’s 80 shops including John Lewis, H&M, Habitat, and Next are a mix of big retailers and smaller boutiques which sell fashion, accessories, clothes and gifts.

The St. Enoch Shopping Centre near Argyle Street is the biggest glass structure in Europe and is the most central of the city’s malls. It is very family friendly with plenty of shops for children such as toy shops, the Disney Store and video game outlets, and houses big retailers such as Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins, TK Maxx and Boots. In addition, there is a huge food court. Seating over 850, you can enjoy a selection of MacDonald’s, KFC, DiMaggio’s, and Chinese food, or simply take the weight off your feet and enjoy a coffee.

Princes Square on Buchanan Street is the designer shopper’s paradise. It’s a sophisticated blend of designer and specialist boutiques selling fashion, lifestyle, gifts, and art and crafts, cafe’s offering fresh coffee and home baking, and quality Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, Italian and Scottish restaurants. It’s beautiful interior including theatrical centre space with mosaic floor, glass roof, brass and glass lifts, and wooden features, makes it attractive for shoppers and browsers alike.

Merchant City

Merchant City is a little shopping oasis offering a quieter shopping experience choc full of atmosphere. Situated a short walk east of Buchanan Street and Argyle Street, it has little traffic, is a fantastic place to explore, and is probably Glasgow’s most cosmopolitan shopping area. Its chic bars, restaurants and coffee shops, exclusive boutiques, cool art galleries, and specialist outlets sell everything from antiques, designer jewellery, clothes and accessories. Nestled just behind George Square is the Italian Centre. In and around its beautiful, authentic piazza are exclusive and designer shops and boutiques including Emporio Armani and Versace, and Italian pavement cafes; the perfect place to sit and enjoy the unique atmosphere.

The Barras

No shopping trip to Glasgow would be complete without a trip to the world famous Barras market. Only a five minute walk along Argyle Street’s pedestrian precinct, the Barras is a market brimming with Glasgow character. Originally in the early 20th century, traders set up their stalls on barrows. The modern Barras features a street level indoor market under the celebrated Barrowland Ballroom, and outside a maze of stalls and bazaars selling anything from antiques, DVDs, clothing, and to junk, bric-a-brac and burgers and chips. It’s a fabulous place to visit just for the atmosphere alone.

Getting There

Glasgow’s excellent travel links make travelling in and around the city quick and easy. With multi-storey car parks at Sauchiehall Street, St. Enoch’s Centre, Buchanan Street and Waterloo Street driving in is easy. Getting around the city is made simple and convenient by the subway, called “The Clockwork Orange” by Glaswegians, and trains, buses and taxis are plentiful and frequent. Most Glasgow shops are open from Monday to Saturday 0900-1730/1800. Thursday is late night shopping with shops open till 8pm or later and most larger retailers open on Sundays.

For the ultimate in retail therapy, visit Glasgow for a great day out or short shopping break.

Why is it bad for the home country?

Brain Drain simply refers to the emigration of individuals with technical skills, good educational qualifications and knowledge, to other countries. Although residing in a country other than the home country may seem harmless, brain drain is a much debated serious issue. Otherwise known as ‘human capital flight’, prime reasons such as political unrest, lack of good opportunities, health risks and poor living conditions are the most common reasons for emigrating to another country. An influx of highly skilled individuals may be great news for the country of emigration, but the same cannot be said for the home country.

Brain Drain is actually a very high economic cost for the home country to bear, since it is unable to capitalize on the knowledge of its own citizens. If one was to analyze the trend over the past few years, it would become evident that in Brain Drain, skilled individuals move away from poor or developing countries to other richer countries. In very poor countries like Ethiopia, Brain Drain only worsens the existing conditions of the state, since thousands of its people prefer to reside elsewhere and implement their knowledge there. Such families are unlikely to return to their home country again and many of them apply for citizenship in their new home country.

Brain Drain in History

Throughout history and even today in the modern world, political unrests and policies have also contributed to many instances of forced Brain Drain, where emigrating to another country was often the only means of survival. For instance, in the early 1930′s; many educated Jews left Europe due to a huge surge in anti Semitic emotions and protests. This resulted in famous personalities and thinkers like Einstein and Niels Bohr emigrating to the United States, in an attempt to continue their research and save their lives. Similarly, Saddam Hussein’s reign in Iraq for years not only sparked off mass violence, but also forced many ethnic Iraqis to flee their motherland.

For many years, the United States and the United Kingdom were hot destinations for emigrants from all over the world; mainly due to the fact that immigrants in both countries form a considerable size of the population. However, in what is now being called ‘reverse brain drain’, these countries are actually losing highly skilled people to competitive jobs and better opportunities overseas; especially in sectors like science, research, technology and IT.

Best tactics to tackle Brain Drain

What are the different measures that a country can adopt to tackle this growing concern?

Good governance, peaceful conditions and good living conditions directly contribute to the economy itself, which could prevent people from relocating permanently.

Recognizing talent and educational qualifications by offering better pay is a strong reason for citizens to stay on in a home country. China, for instance, is taking many steps to ensure that citizens, who go abroad to study, come back and work in their home country.

Giving citizens first preference according to their qualifications and favoring them over expatriates and foreigners, is also an effective tactic. It makes a citizen feel more valued in his own country.

Establishing a world class education system empowers people to explore job opportunities at home itself.

Delaying the emigration of highly skilled individuals by asking them to contribute to society for a few years may not only help reduce Brain Drain but may also encourage them to earn more certifications.

Poor countries in continents like Africa need to devise a more challenging set of emigration procedures which will make citizens think twice about leaving the home country. If countries like India and China have succeeded in building a thriving economy for their people, it may not be long before poor states in Africa follow in their footsteps.

FRANKENSTIEN

Introduction – Frankenstein is still to this date considered as the marvel that came out of the pen of Mary Shelly, the daughter of philosopher William Wollstonecraft and feminist Mary Godwin. Early reception of the novel was conditioned by the presence of Gothic traits, a darkly blooding protagonist haunted by his past; violation of taboos; violent extremes in nature and in the human psyche. Thought the cruder paraphernalia of horror is missing. The novel has come to acquire the status of a “classic” a cautionary tale relevant for as long as humans attempt to create something new, from engineering social utopia to genetic engineering, a remarkably subtle and complex narrative that’s seems to address important political and ethical concerns of the late twentieth century. The critical acceptance accorded to science fiction as a Genre that’s asked serious questions about science and society, and often uses gothic tropes to do so also help the status of Frankenstein.

Plot Summary – The novel begins with explorer Robert Walton looking for a new passage from Russia to the Pacific Ocean via the Arctic Ocean. After weeks as sea, the crew of Walton’s ship finds an emaciated man, Victor Frankenstein, floating on an ice flow near death. In Walton’s series of letters to his sister in England, he retells Victor’s tragic story. Growing up in Geneva, Switzerland, Victor is a precocious child, quick to learn all new subjects. He is raised with Elizabeth, an orphan adopted by his family. Victor delights in the sciences and vows to someday study science. Victor prepares to leave for his studies at the University of Ingolstadt, when his mother and Elizabeth become ill with scarlet fever. Caroline dies from the disease, and Elizabeth is nursed back to health. Victor Frankenstein is thrilled to be at university. He throws himself into his studies and discovers what no one else has. It is possible to create life, specifically in the form of a human. Victor now doubles his efforts and manages to create his own human. However, Victor is disgusted by the creature’s grotesque appearance and guttural speech. He abandons the creature and endeavors to forget that it ever existed.

The murder of his young brother brings Victor back home. While there, he again encounters his creation. The creature confronts Victor with a horrible request: to make another creature to be his companion. If Victor agrees, the creature will leave him and all mankind alone. If he doesn’t, the creature will not rest until he has destroyed Victor and his family.” Characters The story of Frankenstein mainly revolves around three primary characters: Robert Walton — the narrator; Victor Frankenstein — the creator of the monster; and the monster — the destroyer. However, other secondary characters play important roles in the novel as well. The following are the main characters:

• Henry Clerval- Victor’s closest friend and companion, who balance his emotional and rational pursuits, Clerval nurses Victor back to health, playing the role of protector and comforter after Victor runs from the creature when the creature comes to life.

• Alphonse Frankenstein- Victor’s father is described by his son as “respected by all who knew him for his integrity and indefatigable attention to public business.” Victor’s father, very sympathetic toward his son. Alphonse consoles Victor in moments of pain and encourages him to remember the importance of family.

• Elizabeth Lavenza- Wife of victor adopted by Frankenstein’s, Elizabeth and Victor share more than the typical sibling affections for each other; they love each other. She in many ways alter ego of Victor Frankenstein. She gets killed by the monster on her wedding night.

• Felix de lacey- A hard-working son who cares for his family and his beloved fiancee’ Safie. His unasked-for kindness to Safie’s father, a foreign convict, stands in contrast to his cruel dismissal and beating of the creature.

• Mr de-lacey- The blind father of Felix and Agatha, Mr. De Lacey serves as a surrogate father to the creature. The creature notes his benevolence towards his family, and notes that “he would talk in a cheerful accent, with an expression of goodness that bestowed pleasure even upon me. Mr. De Lacey is the only one in the book who does not judge or fear the creature. He is the only friend the creature has.

Frankenstein- an overview

• The novel takes place in the late 1700′s in various parts of Europe especially Switzerland and Germany, and in the Arctic. The novel was published in 1818 in England at the height of Romantic Movement. This time however also witnessed French and American Revolution. The post revolutionary period was also marked by economic suffering and social disorder, as the new industrialism transformed English Society. Shelley’s readers lived in hopeful, but also disturbingly turbulent times, and that is what we witness and most evident in the novel.

• The story is foretold through the medium of letters which Captain Robert Walter writes to his cousin Seville living in England. It is through the letters that we know the locations and the intentions of the captain. Later the letters also reveal the story of Victor Frankenstein and that of growing friendship /Fondness between Captain Robert Walter and Victor and eventually his death.

• Mary Shelley’s use of language in chapters shifts the novel from a hypothesis without consequences to that of a reality without full control or understanding with very real consequences. Shelley’s words become intensely descriptive, in order to provoke contemplation on the part of the reader. She creates a setting that both captivates and horrifies the reader by revealing that Frankenstein seems to have lost all sense of reason, driven only by his compulsion regardless of the consequences. Shelley firsts describes the monster in detail for the reader so that when she reveals Victor’s description, his words are so confusing…’beautiful yet repulsive’ they force the reader to question his true intentions. Quotes

• “…partially unveiled the face of Nature, but her immortal lineaments were still a wonder and a mystery.” (pg. 25) In this passage, Shelley gives nature a gender and physical attributes to something not human. This is an example of personification, a tool used to by authors to make something inanimate more lifelike and expressive. Calling nature a “her” and then using the word lineaments (a word meaning ‘one of the outlines, exterior features, or distinctive marks of a body or figure, particularly of the face’) makes the idea of nature come alive and give Frankenstein more ability to be intimate with the idea of nature. • Victor implores Walton not to follow his example, warning, “Learn from me… how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow.” Here, Shelley seems to argue that ignorance is bliss.

• Frankenstein reveals, “I was seized by remorse and the sense of guilt, which hurried me away to a hell of intense tortures, such as no language can describe.” This theme of self-loathing remains throughout the rest of the book.

• Victor laments, “William, Justine, and Henry-they all died by my hands.” Frankenstein is very earnest in his belief that he is the cause of their deaths, and he is even more horrified by the thought that they won’t be the last victims of his poor judgment. Personifications and Symbols • Light Light symbolizes enlightenment in Frankenstein. Walton expects to find the secrets of the universe unveiled in the North Pole, which he describes as “a country of eternal light.” Light also accompanies nearly all of Victor’s epiphanies. When he first discovers natural philosophy, he says, “A new light seemed to dawn upon my mind.” When he discovers the secret to creating life, he describes his feelings as if “a sudden light broke in upon me.” He envisions pouring a “torrent of light into our dark world” through the creation of a new species. Yet light that’s too bright is also blinding, and both Victor and Walton fail to see or consider the dangerous consequences of their quests for enlightenment.

• Fire The complete title of Shelley’s novel is Frankenstein, Or the Modern Prometheus. Prometheus was the titan who, in Greek mythology, gave the knowledge of fire to humanity and then suffered severe punishment at the hands of the Gods for his generous actions. In Frankenstein, VICTOR attempts to give the gift of the secret of life to humanity, but ends up suffering grave punishment as a result: the MONSTER he creates destroys his family and his life. Fire appears throughout the novel as a dangerous force used for sustenance (as when the monster discovers fire) and punishment (as when the monster describes demons suffering in the lake of fire in hell).

• The Primary tension in the novel is between Frankenstein and his monster, a ‘doubling’ of the creature and his creator, which suggests that monstrosity and ‘normalcy’ may not be the binary opposites that they appear to be. Put differently, the story can be said to be about the ‘making’ of a monster, both literally, in Frankenstein’s laboratory, and metaphorically, through social process. • Themes of the novel Search for love: This theme reflects a strong theme in Shelley’s own life. The monster knows he is horrid and will never be loved, although he attempts to find love several times. He is constantly rejected and disappointed. Frankenstein, he, searches for happiness through love, but he meets with tragic loss of several loves. Tragic, weak women: Frankenstein actually begins to make a second female monster, to provide companionship for his own first creation, but he then destoys it and dumps the remains in a lake. Frankenstein’s wife dies tragically, as does the accused Justine.

Summary Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus is the most famous novel by Mary Shelley, wife of the poet Percy Shelley. It has been done considerable damage thanks to its innovation and its author’s audacity in confronting issues of such a controversial nature as artificially creating life in the early nineteenth century. The novel was immediately enormously successful, spawning a stage production that made Frankenstein’s creation – the so-called ‘monster’ – mute for the first but not only time. The novel was published initially in 1818 although later versions exist in which the author succumbed to pressures to tone down certain elements. This is the more polished 1831 edition, which is the most common edition of the text. The original is a masterpiece of Gothic literature however. It is narrated by an explorer, Walton, who writes the story in letters home. However, the bulk of the story is told by Victor Frankenstein who narrates his own creation of a man from bones he has stolen and with the power of electricity. In the centre of the concentric circles of narrative is the creature himself, by far the most sympathetic of the narrators, who is forced by an unsympathetic world to acts of violence and cruelty and finally the murder of Frankenstein’s wife when the ‘father’ refuses to create a companion for the creature. The novel’s settings of Swiss mountains and Arctic desolation are perfect for Mary Shelley’s tale that was originally conceived abroad in the wet summer of 1816 with Byron and her husband in a night telling ghost stories. None of the narrators are wholly to be trusted or liked, but each learns from the others and their mental torment is mimicked in the ‘sublime’ or rugged and vast landscapes Shelley describes so vividly.

The American literature tells us about many people who have contributed in it. Many names are included, and Ralph Waldo Emerson becomes one of those people. If you are not really familiar with this man, the following explanation will tell you more about it and will let you know about several of his works and his thought which is different from most people at his era.

Have you read several essays written by Ralph Waldo Emerson? Definitely, you can find some, but his poems seem to less popular than his essays. People will be more familiar with “Circle”, “Self Reliance”, “Nature”, “History” and several other essays if compared with his poems. Anyway, some of his early poems are including “To Rhea”, “Hamatreya”, “Good-By”, “Guy”, “Fate”, and so on. Those are the great poems which were written by Emerson and can be claimed as the great poems. However, many people put their deepest respect to him for his popular name as essayist.

Further, Ralph Waldo Emerson is known as the transcendentalist. People have known that Transcendentalism is a new wave or movement in literature which also includes Henry David Thoreau and Emily Dickinson as the two other practitioners. Some people are often confused by the real definition of transcendentalism. In short, it is a movement where people are asked to rely on themselves and they can define the greatness of God through looking at the nature.

If you look back at literature theory, you will find several other thoughts from several people. They bring their ideas to people and create the new literary trends in certain period. Sometimes, the ideas support the previous thoughts and sometimes do not. You should never forget that opposition is a normal thing in this world. The presence of different ideas will make many people get many perspective and knowledge about several different matters. What do you think about it?

This article is about “2010 Bands of AMerica Grand NAtionals Preliminary Scores”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “2010 Bands of AMerica Grand NAtionals Preliminary Scores”:

Executive Summary

The Harvard Branch of Continental Travel is located 30kms east of the CBD on the busy main shopping strip in Harvard and has been operating for only 6 weeks and is still very new to the area. The Branch is open from 9:00am to 5:30 pm each day, and closes at 6pm on Fridays and it is not open on the weekend. The customer demographics represented in the suburb, are from low socio-economic through to high income, with the two key demographic groups that characterize the area, young families with toddlers and primary school aged children also older families with adolescent children in their mid teens to early twenties. There have been a number of new facilities recently built catering for the needs of these two groups and for the growing population of Harvard which include a new child care center for the younger families, a new retirement village for the aging population and a new multi level shopping center at Harvard Park consisting of 500 retail outlets.

The predominant ethnic profile of Harvard is Anglo-Australian with a significant percentage of first, second and third generation Greek and Italian-Australians and more recent, the profile has expanded to include an increasing proportion of new immigrants of Chinese and Vietnamese origin.

The Harvard Branch had been staffed by personnel from the neighboring branches with no previous working relationship consisting of long-serving employees with an average 7 years experience and of short-term staff. All the staff have Anglo-Australian background except for one of the Part Time Travel Associates who is of Greek origin. Although the attrition rate within Continental’s Branches is within the average range, there has been a slight increase in turnover over the last 2 months, in particular with the more junior members of the team. Recent satisfaction surveys indicate a 65% staff satisfaction level and 54% staff advocacy.

At present, Harvard does not have a customer base although some of the Senior Travel Consultants have brought a number of their clients over to the new branch with them; this is still insufficient to sustain their own targets, let alone the performance of the entire branch. Most travel inquiries received to date all appear to be interested in domestic holidays, with some of the inquiries made for international travel destinations.

1. Situation Analysis

Australians have been known to be avid travelers and it is not uncommon to find that most Australians have lived overseas at some point in their lives, with the majority traveling overseas for a vacation at least once every 3 years with those within the 20-35 age category undertaken international travel at least every 1-2 years.

The terrorist attacks on September 11,2001, caused significant turmoil in the travel industry especially on international travel and within Australia the effect of this promoted an increase in domestic tourism. The sales of travel insurance also increased whereby Continental made a significant loss in the 6 months after 9/11across all its operations, with a 20% downturn in sales.

The collapse of Ansett Airlines impacted greatly on the domestic tourist market as it reduced the capacity of the domestic airline industry, which caused a loss in confidence in the domestic airlines. The war in Afghanistan and the Bali Bombing, the 2004 Tsunami in Asia brought about further decline in international travel, particularly to the Asian region being one of the premier tourist destinations for Australian travelers. The confidence of Australians to travel abroad is expected to make a very slow recovery given these events making it very difficult for travel agencies to meet their sales targets and still promote growth.

The staff profile within Harvard Branch needs strengthening, as the teams have not worked together previously. The staffing mix needs to reflect the culture and demographic of Harvard where most of the population are of Italian, Greek, Chinese and Vietnamese origin. At the present all staff is of Anglo-Australian, except for one of the Part Time Travel Associates who is of Greek origin. Although the attrition rate within Continental’s Branches is within the average range, there has been a slight increase in turnover over the last 2 months, particularly with the more junior members of the team. Recent satisfaction surveys indicate a 65% staff satisfaction level and 54% staff advocacy.

2. Marketing Summary

Typically the travel and tourism market is normally separated into two main categories, business and leisure travel. Each would normally contribute about 45% to total revenues. The remainder is generated from combined business/leisure trips. The market is further separated into domestic and international travel. Domestic travel accounts for approximately 70% of industry revenues. Business travel can be divided into two categories, the medium to large corporate account, and the small independent businessman. Leisure travelers are classified according to the types of trips they take, income, or age. The four primary leisure travel groups are:

1. Adventure, Special Interest, R&R, Honeymoons & Sightseeing Trips.

2. High-Income Travelers.

3. Budget-Conscious Travelers.

4. Families, Students & Seniors.

3. Market Demographics

The Harvard Branch of Continental Travel is located 30kms east of the CBD. While a wide range of customer demographics are represented in the suburb, from low socio-economic through to high income, two key demographic groups characterize the area: young families with toddlers and primary school aged children, and “empty nesters” – older families with adolescent children in their mid teens to early twenties. There have recently been a number of facilities built, catering for the needs of these two groups. For younger families, a new childcare centre, and for the ageing population a new retirement village and nursing home have been established. A multi-level shopping centre, Harvard Park, has also just opened, with over 500 stores now operating.

The predominant ethnic profile of Harvard is Anglo-Australian with a significant percentage of first, second and third generation Greek and Italian-Australians. More recently, the profile has expanded to include an increasing proportion of new immigrants of Chinese and Vietnamese origin.

Harvard Branch is located on the busy main shopping strip in Harvard and is Continental’s newest branch in the State, having opened just six weeks ago. As such, it does not have an existing client base. The Branch is open from 9:00am to 5:30 pm each day, and closes at 6pm on Fridays. It is not open on the weekend.

The staff profile within the Harvard Branch appears divergent, but is not atypical. Personnel from the neighboring branches have staffed the Branch and as such, the teams have not worked together previously. There are a high proportion of long-serving employees, with an average 7-year tenure, together with an equally significant percentage of short-term staff. All staff are Anglo-Australian except for one of the Part Time Travel Associates who is of Greek origin. The attrition rate within Continental’s Branches is within the average range, although there has been a slight increase in turnover over the last 2 months, particularly with the more junior members of the team. Recent satisfaction surveys indicate a 65% staff satisfaction level and 54% staff advocacy.

4. Market Needs

Domestic and International Packages are a specialized product, and first-hand knowledge of these packages is necessary in order to effectively promote and sell them. Many potential customers are unsure of the location they wish to reach. Part of the value associated with travel agencies is the knowledge they possess about destinations. Customers look to the agency to provide them with sound advice for a competitive price. Continental Travel Group at Harvard is confident in its ability to do so. Continental Travel Group at Harvard can save the customer time and money, and help to ensure that they are satisfied with their vacation.

5. Market Trends

One notable trend in the travel industry is increased deregulation. Deregulation has increased competition and the need for differentiation. In many cases, the prices of airfare and other travel-related services have dropped. Additional trends include caps on agency commissions by many of the larger airlines, increases in adventure travel, and reduction of profit margins.

6. Market Growth

The travel industry is growing. Reasons for this growth include a healthy domestic economy and the increased value of the Aussie has made travel more attractive for Australian residents. The healthy economy has increased business, which in turn will see a boosted domestic business travel for 2007.

7. SWOT Analysis

In the following four sections are the most relevant issues to Continental Travel Group at Harvard’s and for its successful operation. Harvard’s strengths include its management, experienced staff, marketing experience, and targeted focus. Harvard will capitalize on these and other strengths, to take advantage of opportunities and manage threats. Firm weaknesses are primarily those inherent in a start-up venture.

7.1. STRENGHTS

· International network of more than 1200 stores

· Workforce of over 6500 employees

· Annual T/O of $3.5 Billion

· Expanding at rate of more than 20% a year

· Recognised as the fastest growing business of its kind in the world

· High proportion of long-serving employees average of 7 year tenure

· MANAGEMENT: Harvard’s manager has a successful record in this industry. His experience and the network of valuable connections he has developed will contribute greatly to Harvard’s success.

· LOCATION: Harvard branch is ideally located.

· EXPERIENCED STAFF: The Harvard team is experienced in the travel business. Most senior members have over five years experience.

7.2 WEAKNESSES

· Lack of differentiation between offerings of major players resulting in price base competition

· Only one staff of Greek origin when significant percentage of ethnic profile are Greek and Italian

· No Chinese or Vietnamese consultants working at branch

· Still to establish a customer/client base

· Branch is closed on the weekends

· Increase in turnover of Junior members within the Team

· Poor staff satisfaction and advocacy levels

· START-UP STATUS: Harvard is a start-up business in the area.

7.3 OPPORTUNITIES

· Australians have traditionally been considered as avid travellers, vacations taken at least once in every 3 years

· Age group of 20-35 travel internationally at least 1-2 years

· Increase in domestic vocations with increased uncertainty in international travel due to wars, terrorist attacks and natural disasters

· New shopping centre with over 500 stores just opened

· Ethnic population with very high percentage of Greek and Italian- Australians

· Increasing population of new immigrants of Chinese and Vietnamese

· Young families and empty nesters

· Older families with adolescent children in their mid teens to early twenties

· Branch is closed on weekends

· The team has not worked together previously

· Package Tours and Cruises

· Selling insurance products

· Incentives from airlines and major hotels

7.4 THREATS

· Decline in international travel due to wars, terrorist attacks and natural disasters in popular tourist/holiday destinations

· The collapse of local airlines reducing the capacity to service the domestic destinations

· Increase in fuel prices

· Web-based travel sites offering cut price travel deals

· Jetstar and Virgin Blue offering flights and packages at highly competitive rates

· New shopping centre with 500 stores just opened including major competitors such as Jetset and Harvey World including smaller independents

· The aging population in the area

· INTERNET AND PRICE COMPETITION: When the airlines were deregulated, price competition increased. Further, the Internet has provided a sales medium for consolidators who compete on price and has also given consumers the ability to plan and arrange trips for themselves. Thus, the traditional agency faces greater competition.

· ECONOMIC DOWNTURN: The strong domestic economy has been good for the travel and tourism industry. Continued growth is anticipated. However, unforeseen or unanticipated economic recession would reduce disposable income and threaten Harvard’s sales.

8. COMPETITION

Competition in the Travel Industry in Harvard has increased over the past five years in line with the broader environment. This includes the presence of major players such a Harvey World and Jetset, as well as a number of smaller independent competitors who have recently opened in the new Harvard Park Shopping Centre.

Overall, there is a general lack of differentiation between the offerings of the major players and comparative information is readily available to consumers, resulting in price-based competition. This situation has been exacerbated by the extension of web-based travel sites, offering cut-price travel deals, together with the entry of Jetset and Virgin Blue offering flights and package deals at highly competitive rates.

In the travel industry, as in other industries, there are large national chains, small home-based businesses, consolidators on the Internet, etc. Direct national competitors include: Harvey World Travel, Jetset Tours, Virgin Blue, and Other smaller operators

9. SERVICES

Sales are generated through travel bookings the consultants make which include:

· Airline Bookings

· Accommodation bookings

· Car Hire

· Cruises

· Package tours

· Insurance Sales

Profit margins are highest with Package Tours and Cruises, each yielding a 14% profit, with insurance products yielding the highest with a 17% profit margin. Airline and accommodation bookings yield a 2% margin, however the airlines and major hotel chains offer agents incentives such as free trips and accommodation during monthly promotions, should they exceed a predefined number of bookings. Car hire yields the lowest margin of just 1%.

10. KEY TO SUCCESS

· Effectively segment the travel market and target Greek, Italian, Chinese and Vietnamese travelers.

· Successfully position us as travel specialists.

· Communicate the differentiation and quality of our offering through personal interaction and media.

· Develop a repeat-business base of loyal customers.

11. CRITICAL ISSUES

· Market growth projections for the travel industry and for domestic and international travel are accurate.

· National economic conditions, which are favorable to the travel industry, will not experience significant decline in the next five years.

· International conditions will remain favorable for service providers.

· Capability to produce effective, targeted communications that promote the benefits of adventure travel and Harvard’s focus and services.

12. MACROENVIRONMENT

· Due to a good economy, travel and tourism is growing.

· Population segments have different needs and wants. This requires effective target marketing.

· Internet sales threaten the traditional firm, and technological advances require greater knowledge and sophistication in most industries.

· International conditions, which are favorable, greatly affect the industry. Political unrest, military action, and other issues determine availability to many foreign destinations.

13. MARKETING STRATEGY
Its marketing strategy will reflect this goal as it builds its reputation in the Harvard area. Though Continental operates in the travel industry, it provides much more than travels.
· Group travelers: These are groups that belong to local organizations.

· Corporate domestic and International travelers: Harvard will target local businesses in an attempt to secure corporate accounts.

· Harvard plans to focus its initial efforts on the International and Domestic travel market in the greater Harvard area. As Harvard Branch grows, marketing efforts will expand. The major purchasers that fit Continental Travel Group target market are located within the Greek, Italian, Chinese and Vietnamese community.

18. POSITIONING

At present, Harvard does not have a customer base. Some of the Senior Travel Consultants have brought a number of their clients over to the new branch with them; however this is insufficient to sustain their own targets, let alone the performance of the entire branch. Of the travel enquiries received from customers to date, most appear to be interested in domestic holidays, with a fair mix of enquiries to international travel destinations such as Europe in particular.

19. STRATEGY

19.1 Strategy 1: Develop brand recognition through the use of effective advertising, marketing communications and promotion. To build the Branch business from a Zero base with increases of 20% per annum.

Tactic: Develop a marketing mix designed to target the Harvard market.

Program: Print and electronic advertising campaign, using specialty publications and local radio as primary media.

Program: Use strategic alliances to conduct promotions and giveaways.

Tactic: Expand brand recognition to the national market through increased industry participation and presence.

Program: Utilize the networking benefits of industry associations, trade shows, and publications.

Program: Develop and promote Continental Travel Group website. The availability of information and the ability to schedule and purchase online will be beneficial to the customer and Continental Travel Group.

19.2 Strategy 2: Increase revenues and reduce costs by establishing repeat and corporate customers and to concentrate on doubling Customer advocacy to 33% over the next 12 months.

Tactic: Customer satisfaction program.

Program: Focus Harvard’s efforts on customization of domestic and International travel and utilization of its core competencies. Program: Post purchase and post trip follow-up. Research indicates that the communication between the firm and the customer after the sale positively influences repeat purchase.

Tactic: Corporate account acquisition.

Program: The corporate sales program will depend upon specialized literature and personal promotion. Corporate accounts generate recurring revenue and will help diversify Harvard’s sources of income.

Program: Corporate giveaway promotion. Trips will be awarded as prizes and will be promoted via local radio.

19.3 Strategy 3: Develop a strong cohesive and proficient team at the same time creating a workplace with high retention rate and equally high levels of job satisfaction and staff advocacy to 75%. Creating a high performance team culture and motivating and supporting the branch team to proactively grow the business and outperform its targets. Staff – Achieving 75% staff advocacy (i.e. staff recommending Continental Travel to people as a place to work) Currently 54%

Tactic: Conducting training and development activities to up skill staff Multi skill all existing staff to cover all areas of Travel and Bookings, OH&S, Company Policies, Standards and Procedures.

Program: Utilise all available training resources from all participating partners including Airline and Hotels, as well as any internal training facilities and resources within Continental Travel Group.

Tactic: Develop Career paths for Senior Consultants and Junior Travel Associates

Program: Provide Language courses for the development of dealing with people of Italian, Greek, Chinese and Vietnamese origin. Provide career progression to those that excel in what they achieve not only on seniority. Open avenues for high achievers into the corporate accounts portfolio and group bookings.

Tactic: Fast Track current demographic services

Program: Look at hiring potential candidates as part time Senior Consultants and Junior Travel Associates that already are multilingual.

20. MARKETING MIX

Continental Travel Group at Harvard will employ a wide range of advertising communications and promotion to achieve its marketing goals. Research on the demographics of Harvard’s target market suggests that the most effective communications will come through advertising in several specialty publications and via local radio. In addition, direct interaction or promotion at local clubs, shopping malls, local sporting events, etc. will be part of Harvard’s marketing mix.

21. SERVICES AND SERVICE MARKETING

Harvard will sell standard travel agency goods and services including airfare and travel packages. Additional services will include assistance with passports, providing access to top-of-the-line equipment and supplies, and a superior offering that includes access to better than average travel offers, accommodations, and entertainment. The value added of Harvard’s offering is its knowledge and expertise, competitive rates, and specialty focus on International and Domestic travel, which will translate into increased assurance and satisfaction for the customer. Harvard’s decision to focus on International and Domestic travel was made because economic indicators suggest that an increased demand for this service exists and members of the Harvard team are an experienced and enthusiastic team. It is hoped that this enthusiasm will be communicated to the customer, and Harvard’s experience will translate into satisfaction and repeat business.

22. PRICING

Much of Continental Travel pricing is determined by market standards. Harvard Branch will attempt to maintain margins of 20% on all airline travel. Margins on all other products and services vary depending upon the provider but are expected to average 20%. Harvard will make every effort to maintain a competitive pricing policy. However, as Harvard builds its reputation as the premier provider of International and Domestic travel, it expects to increase revenues with increased business.

23. PROMOTIONS

During Harvard’s Continental Travel Group first year of operation, it will hold a grand opening and will organize and sponsor several local events. Events will include, among others, school sports, fun run, and any other community functions. Harvard Continental Travel Group will provide various travel packages and other items as prizes. All of Harvard Continental Travel Group employees belong to local clubs and will, through interaction with other members, promote Harvard’s services. During the grand opening and other events, Harvard Continental Travel Group will provide literature with information about trips and travel packages, resort specials. Negotiations with local clubs will commence and additional promotion will likely occur through these strategic alliances. Specialty rather than large national publications will serve as media vehicles for Harvard’s advertising. Local radio stations will also be used. Personal selling will also occur, though phone solicitation will be limited. Harvard Continental Travel Group plans to occasionally station sales personnel in locations around Harvard, such as the new shopping centre. Continental Travel’s at Harvard goal is to develop personal familiarity between its employees and the community.

24. MARKET RESEARCH

Research on the travel and tourism industry will be purchased as necessary. Demographics and spending patterns of travelers will be secured and used to formulate communications strategy. Harvard Continental Travel Group will conduct customer surveys when a specific research problem is identified. Harvard Continental Travel Group subscribes to several industry publications and will attend trade shows to stay abreast of relevant issues.

25. FINANCIALS, BUDGETS AND FORECASTS

The marketing budget will be evaluated quarterly, and at the end of year one, adjustments will be made to advertising schedules, media vehicles, effective frequency, etc. as necessary.

The following issues are relevant to Harvard’s marketing efforts:

· As a start-up, Harvard Continental Travel Group has no baseline by which it can determine the effects of its marketing efforts on sales. Year two marketing activities will benefit from the financial results of year one operation.

·· The marketing budget has been established based on anticipated revenues. Harvard Continental Travel Group plans to employ the use of more sophisticated budgeting methods as a baseline is established.

· Much of Harvard’s Continental Travel Group marketing efforts will involve personal interaction with customers in the Harvard area. Harvard Continental Travel Group must attempt to conserve resources when possible, especially in the early stages of operation. Local community and business marketing and other activities will be critical to Harvard’s success.

26. SALES FORECASTS

Continental Travel Group at Harvard expects sales to be slow in the first and possibly second quarter of operation. Sales growth is estimated at 20% annually.

Continental Travel Group at Harvard anticipates that the majority of revenues, 75-80% will come from individual customers in the Harvard area in the first two years of operation. The remainder of revenues will come from corporate clients and national customers who purchase via the Internet. By year three, Continental Travel Group at Harvard hopes to capture more sales from corporate and national customers, thus growing it business in the Harvard area.

Preliminary goals for year three are:

· Harvard Local customers: 40%.

· Corporate customers: 30%.

· National Customers: 15%.

· Internet: 15%.

27. EXPENSES BY BRANCH MANAGER

In Year two expenditures could easily double if Continental Travel Group at Harvard generates sufficient revenues. As efforts to communicate with the national and global markets increase, Harvard Branch expects to use several national publications for advertising. Doing so will be costly

Continental Travel Group at Harvard marketing efforts has been designed to improve sales. Harvard’s Branch Manager will be responsible for tracking the various programs. If measurable results are not realized, changes will be made to the marketing mix. Other factors, such as economic recession, sales below estimates, high costs associated with the use of certain media, and others may influence Harvard’s marketing budget and mix.

Continental Travel Group at Harvard anticipates that contribution margin will improve beginning in year three. By then, Harvard Branch will have developed a better mixture of revenue sources, strategic alliances, and brand equity. Corporate accounts will bring higher contribution margins, as will other group trips. Suppliers tend to give price breaks if the agency can book larger groups.

28. CONTROLS

Continental Travel Group at Harvard marketing efforts will be reviewed quarterly. Variance between sales goals for the first year of operations and revenues will be Harvard’s only real source of comparison. Continental Travel Group at Harvard will seek customer feedback on marketing efforts and may conduct surveys or focus groups to test ad effectiveness.

29. IMPLEMENTATION MILESTONE

· Continental Travel Group at Harvard grand opening event will take place in the first quarter. This will be a combined effort with the local Greek and Italian community club, 2 of Harvard Branch strategic alliances. The event will be hosted by a local radio station and will include a prize giveaway of a resort travel package within Australia.

· Continental Travel Group at Harvard will begin its corporate account marketing in the first quarter and hopes to secure at least one corporate account during that time.

· Continental Travel Group at Harvard website should be operational by the middle of the second quarter of operation. The website will be capable of online transactions with secure site protections. Continental Travel Group at Harvard banners will be placed at several Australian Web locations.

· Tracking of ad exposure will begin in the first month of operation. Harvard Branch has a designated 1800 number that is only used in advertising.

30. CONTINGENCY PLANNING

These are the issues that will most likely call for changes in Harvard’s operations. The threats and the manner with which they will be dealt are discussed:

30.1 INTERNET AND PRICE COMPETITION: When the airlines were deregulated, price competition increased. Further, the Internet has provided a sales medium for consolidators who compete on price, and has also given consumers the ability to plan and arrange trips for themselves. Thus the traditional agency faces greater competition. Continental Travel Group at Harvard plans to compete with other firms on the Internet by having its own website on which to conduct communications and sales. Price competition is a problem in any industry. Continental Travel Group at Harvard will not compete on price, mainly because it cannot win doing so. Continental Travel Group at Harvard will continue to communicate the benefits of its offering. It will attempt to remain competitively priced at the same time continue to offer best customer service in the Harvard area.

30.2 LOCAL COMPETITION (EXISTING AND POTENTIAL: There are several agencies in the Harvard area that specialize in both Domestic and International travel. However, we believe that we can provide the service and the right package. Moreover, additional travel specialists may follow Continental Travel Group at Harvard lead. Competition is already present. It is also possible that new agencies will enter the Harvard market with a similar offering. Continental Travel Group at Harvard will attempt to establish itself as a market leader and maintain that position if new competitors emerge. Additional safeguards include ongoing analysis of additional segments of the travel market in which Continental Travel Group at Harvard might successfully participate. In addition, opportunities for vertical and horizontal integration will be examined.

30.3 ECONOMIC DOWNTURN: The strong domestic economy has been good for the travel and tourism industry. Continued growth is anticipated. However, unforeseen or unanticipated economic recession would reduce disposable income and threaten Continental Travel Group at Harvard sales. In the event of an economic downturn, Continental Travel Group at Harvard will continue to promote and likely expand its offering.

31. ACTION PLANS TO INCORPORATE 19. STRATEGY

This article is about “Penetrating quote frankenstein”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Penetrating quote frankenstein”:

If you Google John A. Williams, you’ll find a quote referring to him as “arguably the finest Afro-American novelist of his generation”. I considered that statement to be PR hyperbole until I actually bought and opened one of his books over ten years ago.

My memory does not provide clear data on whether I read Clifford’s Blues orClick Song first. Whichever one I finished first, the other was next. As is my tendency when I like an author, I tend to read as much as his/her work as I can. A friend recently asked me which Edwidge Danticat books I had read. I started going down the list. Before I named book #3, she laughingly inquired if I read everything by her. The answer was yes – that’s how I do. Reading a single author intensively like that can be both beneficial and a mistake. I read Alice Walker like that up to and including Temple of my Familiar. After that book, I was done. I don’t read Alice Walker anymore. I feel as if I know her writing and there’s nothing new she has to offer to my reading experience. It’s not a judgment because I’ll always be appreciative of the time I spent with her novels and poems. However, when it comes to diversity of subject matter, well, there’s not a wide range.

That is not the case with John A. Williams. Author of numerous novels, the ones focused on here will be Click Song, Clifford’s Blues and Jacob’s Ladder.

To be perfectly honest, Click Song is a long book. I’m not referring simply to the number of pages – although it does clock in at 430 pages. Rather, I’m referring to the energy of the novel. At times, it drags by dwelling on aspects of Cato’s life that could’ve used an editor’s knife. However, in detailing Cato’s experience during the period when it wasn’t as “fashionable” to be a black writer,Click Song provides writers interested in black literary history with a bird’s eye view. That, to me, is what sustained my interest and kept me reading.

Having something in common with Cato (writing) helped inordinately with readingClick Song. However. all I had in common with the narrator of Clifford’s Blues was skin color and a mutual existence in a hostile environment – although his was more openly genocidal than mine.

To quote from the book’s description on its amazon.com page:

If there is an undiscovered aspect of the black experience, it will be found by John A. Williams, one of the founding members of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. In his newest of twelve novels, Williams presents the fictionalized narrative of a black jazz musician imprisoned in Dachau who keeps himself alive by working as the band leader of a group of prisoners who play jazz at a nearby officers’ club. Clifford’s Blues penetrates a hidden portion of African American history, and the hidden reserves of the heart.

Told in journal form, this novel is the story of Clifford Pepperidge, a gay musician performing in Europe during the thirties. After he is caught in a compromising situation with a American diplomat, Clifford spends the duration of Hitler’s reign in Dachau. He escapes the worst horrors of the camp by working as the houseservant to an SS officer.

Undoubtedly harrowing, the things Clifford experiences as part of his struggle to survive as a black gay jazz musician in Nazi-era Germany constitute a testimony to the strength of the human spirit. Out of the three novels by Williams that I’ve read so far, Clifford Blues is my favorite.

Williams has an undeniable ability to capture the times his varied novels depict. Upon completing Click Song, I started giving more serious thought to remaining a truly independent writer whose career and/or book production/output is not dependent on the traditional, major publishing houses.

However the book that spoke most to my conscious “side” was Jacob’s Ladder. It is a Bond type thriller – only the hero is a black US military advisor sent to a fictional West African country. While there he resumes ties with a boyhood friend, Chuma Fasseke, who is now president of the country. The dynamics – Jake’s confusion about his loyalty – Africa or the US; the friendship between Fasseke and Jake still resonate with me – even though it’s been over a decade since I read the book.

Therefore, it has to be said, John A. Williams is a hell of a novelist. Never was I unduly bored or uninterested in the characters in his novels. The settings were written so well I came away from each read with a deeper sense of the period depicted than a regular history book could provide.

I have added Captain Blackman, another one of his novels, to my next book buying list.

This article is about “Make kids wind instrument”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Make kids wind instrument”:

Shofars, the Biblical musical instruments plays an important role in Judaism. The Jewish devotees blow this wind instrument for making wonderful musical sounds during the holy celebration of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashana. Many Jews buy shofars for learning to blow it. But for the lay man purchasing a good one can be pretty interesting and challenging job indeed.

Ram’s horns are found in many shapes, sizes and designs. The Kudu or Yemenite-shofar and the Ram’s Horn are highly popular among people who want to buy these instruments for their Biblical significance. While the longer Yemenite instrument looks really impressive with its shiny and twisted body the smaller Ram’s Horn instrument is preferred for its symbolic implication.

If you are eager to learn the art of playing these tools you must buy shofars of small size. The kudu are quite difficult to blow especially for the learners. With a Ram’s Horn you can easily learn and practice the art. This small and beautiful instrument is light and easy to carry and it delivers soothing musical sounds as well.

Many people buy shofars simply for their unique beauty. The partially or fully polished instruments are really attractive and stylish. You can also buy shofars that are richly decorated and embellished. But if you like the natural and simple look you can also buy the unpolished ones from the nearest store. If you browse on net you will come across various online stores specialized in selling these items where you can place your order and buy without stepping out from your home or office.

Cost of shofars can vary according to their sizes and styles. The Yemenite and the painted or silver coated shofars are highly expensive. If there is any good Judaica store or specialized rams horn store in your area you can buy shofars from these places at discounted rates. To buy at really low price you can choose the most reputed online store as well. Many of these online stores offer free shipping on the purchase of shofars.

While looking for a nice shofar for buying you must try out different kinds of shofars to select the best one. By visiting the local store you can actually explore their collections and make a fair decision. If you buy from a reliable online store though you can not try out the shofars personally before purchasing them the well trusted online shofar shops always test the shofars before delivering them to the clients.

Whether you want to learn to blow shofafrs or wish to cherish the Biblical significance of this wonderful wind instrument you must buy shofars of finest quality available only at the most reputable stores.
