If you combine those fees with the additional money that the lenders can earn from “marking-up” the interest rate; lenders could make as much as $12,000 profit on a $200,000 loan.

In all fairness, most lenders don’t fleece their customers like this, however some do. If you are considering taking out an FHA mortgage I advise you to look at your good faith estimate carefully. If you see discount points listed in the “800″ block of numbers do not close your loan. Some lenders will give very compelling arguments as to why they need to charge them, don’t believe it. By disallowing the lender to use discount points, you have effectively forced them to keep their closing costs in-check.

Another difference in charges that you will see over conventional mortgages pertains to the insurance each agency requires when taking out the loan. Conventional mortgages (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac) will allow borrowers to forgo the mortgage insurance if the loan is less than 80% of the appraised value. Not so with FHA, when you take out an FHA mortgage you will be forced to have mortgage insurance regardless of the loan to value. The exception is when you take out a 15 year mortgage, if your loan is less that 90% of the value of the home you can forego the monthly mortgage insurance.

Also, FHA charges an up front mortgage insurance premium (MIP). This is a one time, lump sum that is added on top of your loan. The MIP is calculated at 1.5% of the mortgage’s loan amount, i.e. a $100,000 mortgage would become a $101,500 loan amount. This premium is refundable on a prorated basis but, the formula that is used to calculate it is stored in the same warehouse that Indiana Jones keeps his worldly treasures.

When you begin to add up the differences between FHA closing costs and conventional mortgages, it would appear that FHA mortgages have the higher closing. However, it really depends on what your specific circumstances are as to whether or not an FHA mortgage is right for you. If you have good credit and a low loan to value, a conventional mortgage is definitely the best road to take. Even if your loan to value is a little high, you may still want to consider a conventional mortgage. Juárez Mayor pleads for help. President sends troops. Murders and kidnappings on both sides of the border have significantly increased in recent years. The violence along the U.S.-Mexican border has increased so dramatically that the Juárez Mayor José Reyes Ferriz asked Mexican President Felipe Calderón to send more help as reported in the El Paso Journal. Only thirty federal officers had been sent at that time to Juárez despite repeated requests for more help.

“It’s necessary and urgent to have agents from the federal preventive police to patrol the streets the way that we need to confront this situation,” Reyes Ferriz said in a news conference.

The Mexican President responded by sending more than 2.000 Mexican soldiers which arrived in Juárez to fight drug traffickers waging a war in the streets of the city, Mexican officials said.

Mexico’s defense secretary, General Guillermo Galavan said at a hastily called news conference today in Juárez Mexico that over 2.000 solders and over 400 federal police officers would patrol the streets and operate checkpoints at entrances to the city.

Officials said the operation will go on indefinitely.

There have been hundreds of killings in Juárez since the start of the new year.

High ranking Mexican officials were escorted by Mexican soldiers to the air port in Juarez after hastily called news conference.

Mexican federal police guard the home where authorities discovered 36 bodies buried beneath a patio. The tallest building stands on the same property where the remains were found.

Mexican federal police have reported discovering mass graves containing numerous unidentified human bodies including two severed heads, three torsos and limbs. Juarez police put the number of bodies at 36. All the victims remains so far have been found in two clandestine graves in the backyard of a Juarez home in the 1800 block of Cocoyoc Street in the Cuernavaca area of Juarez and in the yard of a home on Pedregal street in La Cuesta area of the city.

As reported earlier the Journal learned that Mexican federal police raided the home and seized a large amount of marijuana and arrested two people, Francisco Javier Chavez Nieto, 47, and Sulema Yanir Felix Pinuelas, 37, According to the Mexican federal Attorney General.

The Mexican federal police investigating this mass grave site is the same police agency charged with investigating murders and kidnappings throughout the country of Mexico as well as the massive sex-related serial killings of young women in that city. Back in 1993 was the first year that the mass rape-serial murders of young women in Cd. Juarez became widely publicized. Those dead numbered more than 600.

Families of missing relatives are trying to determine if any of the bodies are their missing relatives. Juarez authorities claim dozens of anguished people from as far away as Mexico City, Torreon, Coahuila and the United States have made inquiries. These people are searching for loved ones who had earlier vanished into the border city’s violent streets.

The Laguna Journal has reported that on the US-Mexico border, where powerful drug cartels and there enforcers murder people on a regular bases our investigation shows that during the last several years, hundreds of people from Tijuana to Matamoros have been forcibly taken by heavily armed men, many believed to be the infamous “Los Zetas.” This much feared group are believed to be the elite “special forces” of the Mexican military, trained in the U.S. at the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia and sent to “wipe out” powerful Mexican drug cartels.

Investigators say the dangerous bands of ex-military elite forces are operating not only in Mexico but in Texas and other parts of the United States unchecked. These rogue Mexican commandos blamed for hundreds of killings and kidnappings along the U.S.-Mexico border has carried out at least five drug-related slayings as far north as Dallas, a sign that the group is extending its deadly operations into U.S. cities, U.S. law enforcement officials say.

There is a list of over 200 missing persons who disappeared in Cd. Juarez. The FBI has identified 32 of the victims as being U.S. citizens. Juarez newspapers say that the actual number of disappeared or missing persons in Cd. Juarez is much higher but many people are frightened to report cases to the authorities. Estimates of Cd. Juarez’s disappeared surpass 1,000 individuals if both men and women are counted.

Jaime Hervella, founder of the Association of Relatives and Friends of Disappeared Persons in El Paso, said it was an anonymous telephone tip he received that led Mexican police to the house at 1847 Cocoyoc street.

Officials with Mexico’s attorney general in Juárez said they could not comment on the case.

“I received a phone call from an informer that at such and such a warehouse where they recently picked up marijuana, you will find some of the individuals that are on your list,” Hervella said.

Hervella’s group has maintained a list of about 200 men who disappeared in Juárez since the early 1990s and are believed to have been victims of drug traffickers.

The informer called Hervella back several times, Hervella said, and had specific details and said the house was behind “the dance hall with the French name.”

The house stands to the back of the popular rental hall La Cité.

The man allegedly gave Hervella the identity of two of the victims, one of whom was a U.S. citizen who disappeared in 1996, Hervella said.

Hervella said it wasn’t easy to persuade Mexican officials to dig up the patio because “we’ve gone on wild-goose chases before.”

Hervella said he told association members to have patience because the bodies at Cocoyoc street are in skeletal form and it may take some time before they can be identified. But he said the discovery was exciting news for families who want to know what happened to their loved ones.

To fully appreciate the scope of the drug related violence in the border region, over a 1,000 drug related murders were reported in Tijuana from 2000-2008. Official Chihuahua state government figures reported in the Cd. Juarez’s El Diario newspaper registered a total of 1,000 or more murders in Cd. Juarez from 1995 to the end of 2007. In Sinaloa state, the birthplace of important border cartels, the press has reported close to 20,000 murders from 1980 to 2008. During the first two months of 2008 alone, murders were registered in the conflictive state, a place where rival bands of gunmen kill for control of the drug-producing Sierra. U.S. Mexican border “Drug War” kills more than the War On Terror in Afghanistan.

Juárez has been plagued by violence as Mexico’s crackdown on powerful drug cartels stokes turf wars among traffickers that have been linked to hundreds of killings in the past two years alone.

What we found, instead, were cotton fields, razorwire, a fancy casino, and an alligator.

My husband, Buck, and I are thinking about trying to find an affordable lot on a lake or river that’s not too far from home. We live in Pensacola, Florida. Property taxes are a lot lower just across the line in Alabama, so we decide to take a short reconnoiter. Besides, there’s nothing like a short road trip to cure a dose of cabin fever after a cold winter.

The north end of Pensacola’s Escambia County sits right up against the south end of Alabama. We drop our old chocolate Labrador retriever, Maggie, at her favorite hotel, the Lucky Dog Resort, and drive north out of Pensacola on Highway 29.

The first defined wide spot in the road is Cantonment, then it’s on to Molino, Pine Barren, Bojia, McDavid, and Century, where Florida ends and Alabama seamlessly begins at Flomaton. We know for sure that we have crossed the line into Alabama when we see begin to see FIREWORKS!! signs everywhere.

Hand-lettered signs may litter the road, but they enliven the journey, and we see lots of them on this drive. They offer hot-boiled peanuts, wildflower honey, and homespun philosophy, like “Perfect love casts out fear.” Or the entrepreneurial, “Miss Ann, Palm Reader.” A little farther down the road, I chuckle at a sign on a ramshackle building that looks about one week from falling in on itself: It says, “DELI – Come In And Find Something Good.”

We cross the “Skippy” White Bridge and continue on through Brewton, self-described “Home of Music Legends.” That may be. It was also the home of my late Daddy, and it used to be home to a fine bar and grill called “Willie’s Place,” where folks could drink whiskey, eat rib eye steak at the bar, and polish off their meal with a piece of warm local blueberry pie topped with vanilla ice cream.

Buck and I cross the Conecuh River on the road to Damascus, past churches, cows, and a pretty little yellow frame house. I’m a sucker for pretty little yellow houses. My ears buzz and I feel flushed when I see two brick chimneys standing upright in the middle of a field off to my right. The burned out remains of a house are scattered in large shards between the chimneys, and surrounded by a field of serene green.

A few miles on down the road, I am admiring a field full of spirited-looking horses, when I notice a deer blind on the other side of the field. Buck dryly notes that if a concealed shooter was sitting in that blind, his gun would be pointed directly at the highway. Red-top clover lines the roads. A hawk flashes golden.

We pass the Auburn University Silvicultural Test Center and several miles of beautifully manicured forests and fields. I see Highway 137 to Wing, Alabama. I’ve never been there before, but I love the name. “Oh, yes, I’m from Wing,” I might say, and someone, someone like Sir Sean Connery, might murmur, “But of course you are, Darling.”

Just before we get to Andalusia, a great big sign shouts “DEAN’S CAKE HOUSE.” Then we gawk, like I’m sure everyone else does, when we pass by a huge, ostentatious mansion followed straight away by an equally huge but more at ease with the landscape place called “Lonesome Dove Ranch.” It’s nice to roam around the countryside and see how people live when there is no homeowners’ association busybody telling them what they can and can’t do.

Lake Gantt is only about a hundred miles northeast of Pensacola, but Buck and I had gotten a late start leaving Pensacola, so we don’t catch a glimpse of Lake Gantt until after 3:30. Gantt is a small, non-navigable Alabama Power Company lake. It has a reputation for being a redneck Riviera for folks who like to fish, run around in a small boat, or just hang out on a dock without being bothered by a whole lot of rules. We see a “lots for sale” sign and drive into a short cul-de-sac for a look. The lots are on a high bluff overlooking the lake. Someone in one of the houses nearby has cranked up the music to a perfect pitch. An acoustic guitar accompanies a sweet-voiced southern guy singing “Jambalaya On the Bayou.” Good thing there isn’t a sales contract in front of me.

We poke around the lake for more than an hour. Locals in their pick-up trucks stir up the red clay roads as they maneuver around our citified black sedan. The prevailing architecture around the lake is Early Fish Camp, with several rather stunning examples of over-the-top gentrification. There are some appealing spots along the way, too, comfortable homes where years of laid back loving seem to have softened the very air. A bridge across a portion of the lake is too low to accommodate a boat, and we can see that the lake has a large number of cypress knees sticking up in clusters. Beautiful, but not the looked-for image in my mind’s eye, nor Buck’s.

“Well, I believe I’ve seen enough,” Buck says. “How about you?”

“Yep,” I replied. “That’s one question answered. Let’s move on down the road.” We point our car toward Monroeville, and the Holiday Inn Express bed we had reserved for the night.

The road to Monroeville takes us through the town of Red Level. A light rain freshens the chartreuse greenery of producing pecan groves, just-planted cotton and soybean fields, and acres of silky wheat full of promise. The John Deere dealership looks so fine to me, with all its pretty tractors. And in the town square, or what passes for it, we see families gathered drinking lemonade and having a picnic to raise money for the volunteer fire department. Dozens of little kids are gathered around the shining new ladder truck.

I feel a punch of emotion as I look at the scene. America. It’s still here. America: the hopeful, the bruised, the wondering. America: the seeking, the wayward, maybe the returning. This moment alone makes the trip.

“I missed the truck route,” Buck notes as we drive past the picnic scene.

“I’m glad,” I say, looking over at him.

“If I hadn’t, you wouldn’t have gotten to see this.”

“That’s right.”

We cross the Sepulga River near the sign for a seemingly non-existent town called “Herbert.” Just past Herbert, a huge sign in bold letters startles me: EARTH SLIDES. For one psychedelic moment, I imagine the earth opening and shifting around like some rebellious jigsaw puzzle, and I give a startled jump like a person awakened suddenly from one of those “falling” dreams. Then I see the high embankments on either side of the road, and realize the EARTH SLIDES sign is like ROCK SLIDES with no rocks.

In the tiny burg of Repton, I see a large, successful-looking business. It is the Cope Funeral Home. “May I give you my card?” says the imaginary salesman in my mind. His card is printed with one word, in big letters: COPE. I respond, “I’m doing the best I can…”

When Buck and I arrive in Monroeville, we circle the venerable old courthouse a couple of times and slingshot around it once more to find the road to the Holiday Inn Express. Monroeville was home to iconic authors Harper Lee and Truman Capote, Now, it caters to visitors at Radley’s Fountain Grill and The Mockingbird Grille.

The front desk clerk at the Holiday Inn is busy trying to help a couple figure out how to get veterinary help for a poor stray cat that is sick or hurt in some way and won’t come out from under their van. Kim, the clerk, has been here before. She is kind, but firmly efficient as she tells them no one will come to help, and agrees it is a terrible situation. The faces of the man and woman show their distress. Their little curly-haired strawberry blond toddler catches my eye and smiles as she walks around on the faux stone floor like a young gymnast on her first day at the balance beam.

Kim never misses a beat. She continue to commiserate with the young couple while she checks us in. She hands us a small paper folder that encases our plastic door entry card and says, “I upgraded you to the Jacuzzi suite.”

“Thank you. That’s great,” I say. Maybe Kim can’t provide the “yes” that the couple hopes for on behalf of a hurting cat, but a room upgrade — this she can do. Maybe it makes her feel better. I hope so.

The room is fine; big for a Holiday Inn Express room, but there is something a little weird and not particularly romantic about having a Parade of Homes size Jacuzzi bath tub with cultured marble surround and a step up to get into it — trust me, this was necessary — all sitting in a sort of living room area with a truly ugly couch directly across from it.

On Saturday morning, we drive deeper into the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt, an area named for its rich black topsoil and noted for exceptional deer hunting. We are on our way to take a look at Lake Dannelly at Miller’s Ferry Landing. where developers are trying to sell lakefront lots. The Miller’s Ferry Landing area is most famous as the home of the gifted Gee’s Bend Quilters.

The road from Monroeville to Alberta begins to look more and more like the land that time forgot. There is an amazing amount of road kill for such a little-traveled road. Stubborn buzzards in the middle of the road are worse than the adorable hairy cows of Scotland, who placidly claim squatter’s rights on rural byways there.

At Beatrice, Alabama, a banner posted by The Beatrice Alabama Garden Club declares it to be Clean-Up Week. I swear, this tiny spot in the world is a veritable oasis of lush landscaping, artfully arranged picket fences, swept sidewalks and blooming flowers. I blink several times to be sure I am not imagining this lovely place. We drive on, and the nostalgic aroma of cut wood from a visible pulpwood plant pervades the air. It is not at all unpleasant, but rather reminds me of childhood visits to my grandparent’s home near Jay, Florida.

The morning is a little gray and drizzly at first, but brightens as we drive down Highway 21 from Monroeville toward Lake Dannelly. We have an appointment with an Alabama Land Partners salesman. They are marketing a development called Legacy Shores on Lake Dannelly. Buck and I are not babes-in-the-woods when it comes to hot-box land sales operations, and are prepared for the worst. But we are in luck, because the fellow who gives us the tour really is what he appears to be: simply a nice young man.

Not long ago, $150,000 would buy the best Gulf-front white sugar sand cream-of-the-crop building lot. Seemed outrageous until they went to $500,000 and beyond, into the stratosphere. Recently, prices are slumping somewhat, but still are high as a Georgia pine. Fishing lake lots used to be a different matter. They could be had for a price more folks could afford. But the Lake Dannelly lots that are actually on the water have asking prices ranging from $120,000 to around $200,000. Not much infrastructure, and the location is somewhere past the back of beyond. Amazing.

They are pretty, though. Just what a lake lot should be. While Buck and the salesman walk and talk, I watch Canada Geese on the water with my little birder’s binoculars, see an osprey fly, and listen to woodpeckers. One of the less expensive lots that fronts on a dead end slough apparently comes with its own five foot alligator. He is on a log out in the water. His golden eyes meet ours. The poor salesman looks crestfallen. Lake Dannelly is about three hours from home, and we want to get back in time to pick up Maggie before the Lucky Dog Resort closes for the day, so we take the nice young man’s card, thank him for his time and get back on the road. Really. It has nothing to do with the alligator.

I revel in the lush countryside as it flashes by. It is unexpectedly hilly. The curvy roads feel like foothills driving. We wind through the town of Uriah, with its huge cotton gin. I notice a little wooden shack nearby with a sign nailed on it: “Jerry Clower CDs.” We see the old Blacksher Mansion, which Buck says was moved from the family’s original home place in Virginia and reassembled in Uriah, (pronounced YOU-rye), board by numbered board.

The next town of any size is Atmore, home of the dazzling new Wind Creek Casino and Hotel, a 225,000 square foot casino complex owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. The casino and hotel complex is like a mirage in this otherwise desolate area. It rises 17 stories, and has four world-class restaurants, 1600 gaming machines, and 236 luxury hotel rooms. Buck and I are eager to get home, so for now, we just drive by and stare in astonishment, figuring we’ll come back another time with our fancy duds and spend the night.

On the other side of town, we drive straight through the Atmore Community Work Center, one of a whole nest of prisons in the area. Guard towers and coils of razor wire stacked against high fences are right by the road. The casino complex and now this. Surreal. Twilight Zone stuff.

We drive along in silence for a few miles, and then we see a big two story home sitting back from the road. There is a large oval man-made pond in front of the house, surrounded by what looks like pasture grass. Stuck in the ground just beyond the pond is a big sign: “Before you left your house today, did you think to pray?”

The sun is low in the sky by the time we reach the pastoral farm community of Walnut Hill and the fertile fields of Molino, where we turn south onto Highway 29 and suddenly are only a half hour away from dog and home.

We didn’t sit on a dock or buy any land. But we saw some lovely water, laughed at roadside curiosities, were moved by the magnificent ordinariness of folks, drove the back roads and the blue highways, and were relieved from the relentless sameness of interstate highways.

We came. We saw. We meandered.

One of the benefits of growing up in the 80′s was listening to legendary bands like Journey in their rise to the top.

I have to say that I was truly inspired last night watching Oprah of all shows. All I have to say is WOW!

I am going to reveal to you a story of struggle and victory here.

Rock Bottom

Coming from a family of four siblings and a sick mother who passed away during their younger years, Arnel was separated from his family who was dispersed to different relatives after his mothers death. Hospital and funeral bills bankrupted the family and they were left to fend for themselves. Arnel fended off hunger with odd jobs, sharing the little he had with his siblings. He was destined to do something and kept on moving toward his dream of becoming a great singer.

The Big Break For Arnel Pineda

Arnel had the gift singing and assumed the role of music journeymen hitting stages in Olongapo, Makati, Singapore and Hong Kong. This took him out of poverty, allowed him to rent a warehouse in which his brother moved in with him. While it was still a far cry from Hollywood, it was a step up from living on the streets.

Personal Challenges

After breaking away from his traveling band, he had a child at the age of 20 but did not marry till later on. He had 2 failed relationships during that time. Though disappointing, Arnel pushed on compiling numerous original material. He started covering great artists like James Brown, Robert Plant and Journey. Foreigners took a liking to his new found talent.

It turns out that through the magic of the Internet a lone fan uploaded his live video performances on YouTube and the posting came at a right time. A legendary rock band was in search of a singer and spent two days scouring Youtube for their future talent.

Journey Guitarist Neal Schon came across Arnel Pineda’s performance of a Journey Hit on YouTube and “POOF”, history was in the making. After exchanging numerous emails with Arnel, they flew him to San Fransisco and the rest is history.

The “NEW” Journey

Arnel Pineda is now touring the world with the legendary rock band Journey and his dreams have come true. After watching his performance on the Oprah show, I was touched, inspired and moved by this mans uncanny willingness to do whatever it took to rise out of the situation he was in and follow his God given destiny to greatness.

I hope this inspires you to never give up, always move past the obstacles in your life that you run into and rise to the top of your game. For Arnel, this is only the beginning. His new record with Journey went Platinum within three months of being released, he was able to provide a home for his family and his financial woes are gone, FOREVER!

Gary Willis is well known within the bass community as one of its shining lights. He is a fierily original soloist and has a virtuosic technique that allows him to lay down some of the funkiest 16th note grooves out there. He is also an original thinker too – just about anything he has to say on the topic of the bass guitar is worth listening to. He has authored two or three bass books as well – this article reviews one of those.

So What’s Ultimate Ear Training For Guitar & Bass About?

The biggest skill most bass players and guitar players need to work at is their hearing. They need to be able to hear not just notes, but chords, and chord progressions, and chord tones played against chords too. This book and CD package is aimed at giving guitar players and bass players a framework that they can use to start working on these skills is a focused and deliberate manner.

The book starts off simply with major scale intervals and labels. It progresses to the minor scale and the intervals within the minor scales. And from there it moves to chromatic intervals. Once you have assimilated these intervals you then move onto triads in various inversions. Then rhythm, Then seventh chords. Then alterations and extensions to seventh chords.

One thing that I really like about the book is the way that Gary Willis has split the process of hearing a musical idea and playing it on your instrument into three parts: (i) manufacturing (ii) visualization and (iii) imitation.

How Is Ultimate Ear Training For Guitar & Bass Presented?

This is a book/CD package. The book is around 60 pages long and the majority of the examples are recorded on the CD. The production quality of the CD is good, and the as with most Hal Leonard publications the printing quality is very good.

There are exercises for you to do within the book, and also tests to see how you are doing.

How Could Ultimate Ear Training For Guitar & Bass Be Better?

In my opinion the exercises in this book WILL help you develop your ear training and playing by ear to a significant degree. However the exercises and tests that are presented need to be practiced extensively. And perhaps a way to get the most out of this book is to use it as a guiding framework in conjunction with some ear training software so that you are constantly testing yourself against fresh material.

Depending on your current level of hearing there could be several years worth of study ahead of you guided by this book. That’s not really spelled out anywhere and perhaps it should be – especially for beginners.

Summary

If you aspire to be a ‘good’ bass player the area you probably most need to work on is your hearing and understanding of music. This book will give you a good framework to set up a thorough ear training practice regime that will help master this. As a plus buying a copy of this will help support one of bass playing’s finest talents – so you should buy it anyway. A 5 Star recommendation.

SAMMY PENN: Born Morgan City Louisiana September 15 1902. Died Florida September 18 1969.

Let’s start off a little differently this time: to me, the greatest New Orleans drummers for my pleasure were Baby Dodds, Sammy Penn and Cie Frazier. But Sammy had a wonderful second string to his bow. He sang with the same phrasing as the legendary Fats Domino, and with his big cigar and huge smile was a master entertainer.

Sammy’s first job was in 1921 with Jake Johnson’s band, then with Chris Kelly’s Brass Band, Kid Rena’s Brass Band and the legendary Eureka Brass Band. He was the mainstay of the Kid Thomas band for a quarter of a century.

You must understand that entertainment was the name of the game. With Sammy Penn and Joe “Twat” Butler, Kid Thomas Valentine had a showband. Singers, personalities and Thomas with his famous “bag of tricks” No wonder this band survived in New Orleans and then toured the world to represent the birthplace of jazz.

In a long interview with my friend Tom Stagg in his wonderful record shop “Good Rockin’” he describes Sammy Penn’s drum kit as “ultra basic” A bass drum, a snare drum, a tom-tom and a cymbal attached to the bass drum. As Tom remembers, he drove the band relentlessly and with an amazing complexity of rhythmic sounds. This kit was simple but the rhythm was anything but!

This is Tom’s recollection of the last weeks of his life. “Sammy returned from a doctor’s appointment with the news that he had very high blood pressure and heart murmurs. Sammy played at Preservation Hall that night and after another session with the Kid Thomas Band loaded their gear on to a bus outside the Hall on St. Peters Street and set off with Sammy for a tour through Georgia to Florida. After only one concert, the bus returned to the Hall with only the driver, the road manager and the body of Sammy Penn.

Talking to Barry Martyn, he rates Sammy Penn highly in great drummers from New Orleans. Sammy played 4/4 on the bass drum and not the more familiar cut time of New Orleans drummers. George Lewis preferred that 4/4 sound and Joe Watkins played that way, but without the explosive accents and complex rhythms of Sammy Penn. Barry had the good fortune to sit in with the Kid Thomas Band and found that he could not hear himself and had to adjust his volume and style to suit the band.

So Sammy Penn was the drummer for Kid Thomas and his Algiers Stompers and spent the major part of his playing life with that band. As Barry Martyn said “When Joe James and Sammy died the band would never be quite the same again”

To hear him at his best, you should listen to “Kid Thomas Valentine Creole Jazz Band on American Music AMCD 49 and “Kid Thomas and his Algiers Stompers” on Riverside OJCCD 1833-2. My great joy is actually seeing the man in action on a DVD of the December Band produced by Big Bill Bissonnette (possibly still available by contacting him on his Jazz Crusade website – jazzcrusade.com).

Sammy Penn was a one-off and we are lucky to have records to listen to. In Australia, the late great Peter Clohesy was influenced by him and in Europe both Keith Minter, Emile Martyn and Chris Marchant show signs of having listened to this “original”.

My next opus will be an interview with Les Muscutt -a superb banjo player from the U.K. who made a huge impression on the New Orleans jazz scene. Due to ill health, he retired recently and I am sure you will find his story interesting! P.S. A last minute call from Barry Martyn to say that his latest video on American Music AMVD4 will feature Kid Thomas with Sammy Penn, plus the Kid Howard band and many other good things!

New Orleans Jazz specialist Geoff Gilbert, banjo player writer and broadcaster lives in the French Quarter. Born in England in 1932. he formed and led the Gothic Jazz Band in 1962. After moving to Sydney, Australia in 1964, he formed the Harbour City Jazz Band and began his jazz radio show on 2MBS-FM which ran for 30 years. In 2001, Geoff relocated to New Orleans to continue his love affair with the birthplace of jazz. Want to hear some more? The Orange Blossom Special, City of New Orleans, and Wabash Cannon Ball are just a few of the trains to have inspired great songs. Of all of them, the Orange Blossom Special is my favorite.
