Alberto Beto Perez is the creator of Zumba. Beto a native of Colombia (South America) is the founder of Zumba and director of the national Master trainers team. Beto Perez is also a celebrity choreographer and a Pro dancer. The song Charlotte the Harlot probably started me listening to Iron Maiden more than just hearing them on the radio because (and I know this is mean) when I was at school back in the day there was a girl I knew called Charlotte and I used to call her Charlotte the Harlot because of knowing the song. This was really when I was a little kid of about 8 and I actually ended up having her as a girlfriend when I was about 14, so it all worked out ok in the end.

Iron Maiden are an English, Heavy Metal group formed in London in 1975 by Steve Harris and have had many band members over the years (too many to list). The more noted members being Dave Murray, Bruce Dickinson, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers, Nicko McBrain, Dennis Stratton and the current lineup is: Bruce Dickinson (lead vocals), Dave Murray (guitar), Adrian Smith (guitar, backing vocals), Janick Gers (guitar), Steve Harris (bass, backing vocals) and Nicko McBrain (drums). This lineup has stayed consistent since 1999.

Maiden are one of the most successful of all heavy metal bands and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide. The name Iron Maiden was taken from an old torture device of the same name and the band actually formed on Christmas Day 1975. The group went through many band changes over their first few years of gigging and it wasn’t until they signed to EMI in December 1979 that they started to record their work seriously. The self titled debut album Iron Maiden was released in 1980 and rose to #4 in it’s first week in the charts. The same year Iron Maiden went on tour of the UK and opened for Kiss and Judas Priest which helped to give them public notice.

Bruce Dickinson joined the band shortly after the second album release (Killers) and went straight out on another tour of the UK. The Number Of The Beast was released in 1982 and was Iron Maiden’s first #1 album in the UK and then they went on a massive global tour including Canada, US, Australia, Japan, Germany and UK. There was controversy in the US when a group of Christian activists held a record burning of Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne albums as they claimed them to be Satanic. Shortly after the tour saw the release of the third album Piece Of Mind which was a massive success.

Iron Maiden then went on another huge tour called the World Slavery Tour and it consisted of 193 shows over 13 months and this is recorded as one of the biggest tours in musical history. The next few years saw Iron Maiden change the ways they made their music and the inspiration behind it. In 1986 Somewhere In Time was released and was based around the ideals of time travel and it was the first album to contain synthesized bass and guitar sounds which were used to add layers and textures to their sound. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son was released in 1988 and was about a mythical child with magical abilities and also was the first album to contain keyboards and made it to #1 in the UK chart.

No Prayer For The Dying was released in 1990 and had huge success and the song Bring Your Daughter… To The Slaughter rose to give Iron Maiden their first #1 single in the UK. The song was recorded for the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. In 1992 Fear Of The Dark was released and was the first album to be recorded specifically for CD and was much longer than previous LP releases.

Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden in 1993 to pursue his own solo career but still performed a farewell tour and recorded two live albums (A Real Dead One which contained songs from 1975-1984 and A Real Live One which contained songs from 1986-1992).

The next album to come was The X Factor and was released in 1995 but didn’t receive as much success as their previous albums. Best Of The Beast was released in 1996 and was the first compilation album and only contained one new song (Virus). Virtual XI was released in 1998 and was even less successful than The X Factor.

In 1999 Bruce Dickinson returned to the band and in 2000 they released the album Brave New World and rocketed Iron Maiden back into the charts and the minds of the UK public. Maiden went on another massive world tour (over 100 dates) and ended at the Rock In Rio festival in Brazil in 2001. The band played to around 250,000 fans and the show was recorded and released as a live album (Rock In Rio).

Iron maiden have released several albums since (Dance Of Death, Death On The Road and A Matter Of Life And Death) and still continue to tour. Iron Maiden have influenced many bands and won the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2002 and were also inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk in 2005.

In February Senator John McCain sponsored a bill to regulate nutritional supplements and the companies who manufacture them (The Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010, S3002), purporting that greater FDA oversight of the manufacture of supplements was necessary in order to prevent the injury and death of American citizens. In particular, McCain is on the record stating that his goal with this bill was to protect athletes from tainted supplements, especially those laced with anabolic steroids.

This bill is now dead in the water as McCain withdrew his support when Senator Orrin Hatch expressed his concern that the bill would negatively impact the nutritional supplement industry.

Even though this bill now won’t be pushed through the legislative process, it appears that we can expect a continuing dialogue over nutritional supplement safety and regulation among members of Congress.

Along with millions of other Americans, I am relieved that the McCain bill is no longer a threat but am concerned about future developments in this arena. The thought of the FDA having any more oversight than it already does over natural products makes my stomach turn for a number of reasons.

Here are a couple –

First, there is a track record of overreaction to the dangers of nutritional supplements (supposed or real) in the media and among policy-makers.

Let’s take the example of ephedra. Ephedra is an herbal stimulant and thermogenic agent (increases body temperature) that people used for weight loss, sometimes with or without caffeine, and it was banned in 2004 because of a number of reported side effects, including hypertension, irritability, nervousness, hyperthermia, heart palpitations, seizures, and even a handful of deaths.

I am not defending ephedra as a supplement that is safe for all people under every condition, and I definitely believe it’s possible that it has caused problems for some people, fatalities including. After all, if an herb or nutritional supplement has any sort of biological impact on the body at all, there are bound to be people who will have a negative reaction to it!

But let’s look at the media frenzy that surrounded the deaths of 3 athletes in the last decade, purportedly due to their use of ephedra.

In 2001, Korey Stringer participated in a Minnesota Vikings training camp and died of heat stroke. Even though his autopsy showed no traces of ephedra in his system at the time of death, the herb was widely blamed for killing the young athlete.

Professional baseball player Steve Bechler died on the field due to heat stroke in 2003. Ephedra was blamed for causing his death, and indeed the toxicology report showed ephedra derivatives in his blood. He also had a history of heat stroke, was overweight, was on some sort of liquid diet, and was at a practice in South Florida with brutal heat and humidity, which he was unaccustomed to, when he collapsed on the field and tragically passed away.

The third high-profile death blamed on ephedra was that of college football player Rashidi Wheeler, who in 2001 collapsed during training exercises designed to push the athletes to the edge and died of exercise-induced bronchial asthma, which he had had problems with in the past. Even though the coroner found ephedra in his system, it was deemed not to be a causative factor in his death.

The death of anyone, particularly someone as young as each of these three men were, truly is a tragedy. I don’t have enough information to judge if ephedra caused any of their deaths, though ephedra’s role in killing two of them appears dubious. Either way, the both the media and the FDA jumped on the anti-ephedra bandwagon and today it is considered an illegal substance.

A handful of possible death implications and a few thousand complaints of negative reactions — that is reason for concern, to be sure! Which is why the media and FDA’s handling of a group of substances that kill between 100,000-200,000 people each year in our nation, and cause complications for far more, is puzzling.

Why is ephedra demonized and banned and herbs/nutritional supplements viewed as such a threat while young (and old) people all around us on prescription or over-the-counter drugs seem to be dropping like flies? All the while, the very agencies and organizations crying foul on supplements are silent by comparison on the pharmaceutical issue!

Why have pharmaceuticals, including many of the pain killers, antidepressants, and anti-anxiety meds found in the bloodstream of young, dead actors (and many others who were less famous), been given a free pass?

The Emperor is naked, and few seem to care…

28-year-old Heath Ledger was found dead in his apartment in January 2008, and his death was found to have been caused by “an accidental overdose of prescription medications including painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills… ‘Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine,’”

Another young actor, Brittany Murphy, shocked the Hollywood scene when she suffered cardiac arrest and passed away in her home in December 2009. Her toxicology report states the following: “Multiple medications were present in the blood, with elevated levels of hydrocodone, acetaminophen [Tylenol], and chlorpheniramine. L-methamphetamine was also present. It should be noted that the pattern of use of these medications suggest treatment of symptoms of a cold or other respiratory infection. Acetaminophen and hydrocodone are components of Vicodin. Chlorpheniramine is the active ingredient in some over-the-counter medications. L-methamphetamine is a component of some inhalers.”

Most recently, of course, is the tragic death of 80’s teen actor Corey Haim at age 38. Haim collapsed and passed away at his mother’s home just a few days ago. While no toxicology report will be available for a few weeks, bottles of prescription drugs (and no illegal drugs) were found in his home, making it at least possible that he just became the next high-profile death by prescription medication.

When compared with the public cry against ephedra and any other herbal or nutritional supplement accused of injuring people, I have to wonder — where is the outrage against these pharmaceuticals?? These few examples of famous people dying in their homes on legal drugs are just the high-profile, proverbial tip of an enormous iceburg.

When taking pharmaceutical drugs as prescribed is attributed to at least 106,000 death per year in America alone (and possibly as many as 200,000) and the total number of deaths attributed to nutritional supplements since 1989 is 230, why would anyone in their right mind want to waste our government’s time and resources on regulating nutritional supplements when the pharmaceutical industry is clearly in much, much worse shape?

Let me repeat — there are a minimum of 106,000 deaths per year in America due to prescription drugs, and there have been 230 deaths due to nutritional supplements since 1989. 1989 was 21 years ago (we won’t count 2010 in these figures since the year just began). That means in the past 20 years there have been approximately 2.1 million deaths because of prescription drugs, and only 230 because of nutritional supplements, or 9,217 times more deaths due to drugs. But there is not 9,217 times more outrage. Somehow, much of the public has allowed its outrage to be focused on the 230 deaths instead of the 2.1 million!

Clearly, something isn’t right here.

Even supposing there truly is a need for oversight and regulation in the nutritional supplement industry, why would we hand such a job over to the FDA when they’ve done such a poor job regulating drugs, allowing 2.1 million Americans in the last 20 years to die because of them?

Lastly, I am absolutely in support of companies who manufacture drugs, supplements, vaccines, and even food additives being required to be up front about injuries that they have been purported or proved to have caused (such as aspartame, or NutraSweet, which has over 10,000 complaints against it – more than complaints of all other substances combined). That aside, I have to wonder where the government derives the authority to tell us which substances we can and cannot take into our bodies.

What it comes down to for me is this — Washington, please leave me alone and let me take my herbs and supplements that healed me of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in 2005, kidney stones in 2008, swine flu and a mumps-like illness in 2009, chronic problems with headaches and skin, too many cold and flu-like illnesses to name just in the few years alone. I don’t want to worry about limited access or increasing prices that would be sure to come with greater regulation.

And in return, let those who desire substances that are associated with well over 100,000 deaths per year in America have their pills.

It was during her childhood that little Marie Grosholtz learned to become an artist and sculptor. Having honed her talent with the employer of her mother, she created her first wax figures in 1777 at the age of sixteen. The employer of her mother was an artist, physicist and physician Philippe Curtius. At the age of Twenty-four, the young woman married and became Madam Tussaud. Recognized for her talent in France, it was in England that the artist became famous. In London, Marie Tussaud has her own wax statue, a beautiful portrait.

The history of Madame Tussaud

Marie was a Marianne, a figure of the French Revolution. Her early accomplishments as an artist-sculptor hinted her ideas, her commitment. After participating in the exhibition projects of his mentor, the doctor Philippe Curtius, she began to make her own works by immortalizing writers and philosophers, in 1777 Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau in 1778. The rebel was sentenced to the guillotine, but through her artistic talent, she was fortunately spared. Her sentence proved very strange indeed she had to make death masks for beheaded. She had immortalized the faces of her friends died for the revolution.

In 1794, Marie inherited the figures of his mentor Philippe Curtius before becoming Madam Tussaud a year later. For her husband Francois Tussaud, she gave birth to two sons. The artist continued her work and decided to exhibit her collection in London in 1802, accompanied by her eldest son. Because of the war, she found herself sheltered in England where she continued to present her masterpiece in exhibitions. Permanently installed across the channel, Marie Tussaud chose London as the final destination. No more traveling exhibition in 1835, she then opened the Baker Street Bazaar to display her collections. The artist presented the figures of the revolutionaries and their murderers, staged in what would be called House of Horrors.

A multinational museum

In 1884, more than thirty years after the death of Marie Tussaud, the museum which displayed her works was moved to Marylebone Road, its current location. In 1926, after a fire that ravaged many works, the company Tussauds Group is created. After having pasted figurines melted by the flames, the museum was undergoing a veritable revolution. It became one of the most important tourist attractions of London. The company Tussauds then set out to conquer the world. Officially known as Madame Tussauds, wax museums are multiplying in the largest cities in the world such as Amsterdam to Las Vegas via New York and Hong Kong and Shanghai and Washington and Berlin and Los Angeles recently. A hugely successful multinational company, the Tussauds Group was bought out several times. In 2007, the buyer called Merlin Entertainments, which has invested one billion pounds.

In Hollywood, actors and film legends are immortalized at Madame Tussauds. Some of the cinema stars have their wax statue in several cities, like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nicolas Cage, Whoopi Goldberg and Marilyn Monroe. At Madame Tussauds, the singers also have right to glory. The legends as Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Madonna compete with young stars like Britney Spears or international Beyonce. Politicians are not forgotten by history when they are at Madame Tussauds, the example of Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, John Kennedy. Certainly, being chairman of a country deserves a statue, without political considerations.

The Nicolas Sarkozy, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Adolph Hitler have their figures in at least one of wax museums. In London, at the site of Madame Tussauds, the statues of more than 400 personalities are exhibited in the Hall of Fame. Usually, celebrities lend themselves gracefully to the opening of their statue in a wax museum as Madame Tussauds. There are some exceptions particularly among politicians who are more reticent. At Madame Tussaud’s, the value does not expect the number of years. It’s more than true for personalities from the world of film, song and sport. Roles of teenagers like Harry Potter or Troy Bolton from High School Musical have brought Daniel Radcliffe and Zac Efron in the temple of celebrity wax. Young champions such as Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton or footballer Wayne Rooney will access to glory soon.

To perform a full tour of Madame Tussauds, it takes about two hours. Through various events, visitors do not see the time passing. When you are hurry, you can go directly to your favorite star and be photographed with her. Simply place like a statue. More than a house of fame, the museum Madame Tussauds is not limited to offer entertainment. It opens a window on history by featuring characters from another generation.

Awesome: that is the one word that I can say about this movie, just awesome. The movie rocked. Step Brothers is about two grown men that just never grew up and ended up living with their parents played by Mary Steenburgen as Nancy Huff and Richard Jenkins as Dr. Robert Doback. Nancy and Dr. Doback meet at a conference and hit it off from the very start and decide to get married soon after making Dale Doback and Brennan Huff stepbrothers.

In the beginning both Dale and Brennan can’t stand each other and work to destroy each other´s world. This is where all the fun and humor comes in. All the drama comes to a deep end when both find a common cause in Brennan Huff’s brother Derek Huff. The over the top brother that disrespects everyone that he meets including Dale Doback who he thinks is the lowest of lowest.

Brennan and Dale find that they have more in common than previously thought; they both like the same women, movies, books and clubs. They both have the same ideas in businesses. In comes Alice Huff, the crazy wife of Derek Huff who hates her life with Derek. She becomes the crazy stalker after Dale punches Derrek in the eye. Dale instantly becomes her hero and she does anything and everything to be with him.

To say that this movie was funny is an understatement. I nearly rolled out of my seat for every single scene. Will Ferrel and John Reilly are one of the best comedy duo’s I have ever seen. They play off each other so flawlessly that you forget that this is just a movie. What can I say about the mother? Mary Steenburgen played an exceptional part as the mother of this family. You could tell that she was uncomfortable saying a few of her lines but she rolled on with the punches. Richard Jenkins as the father was marvelous. I’ve seen him in other movies but non like this character that he plays and he played it flawlessly. Rolling over to Lurie Poston he played the hell out of the brother that anyone would HATE. I wanted to punch him in the face myself he was pissing me off so much. Last but not least, Kathryn Hahn. She played this part. She was crazy but had some lines that had me rolling in my seat. She had one scene where she used a male urinal standing up. Flawless delivery….

Overall, this was a great movie. I am even laughing while I write this review. I can’t add much more than just go see this movie…

The launching of a naval vessel is a special event in the US Navy. Dignitaries are invited and speeches are made, followed by a ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle which starts the ship sliding down the ways. On one occasion though, it took the intervention of movie star and American icon John Wayne for the ceremony to be a success. It happened like this:

On September 25, 1975, at Bath Maine, the Navy prepared to launch the first of a new class of guided missile frigate, USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7). The Perry was of a new generation of sub-hunters, a grand total of 71 eventually being constructed, with versions serving the navies of Australia, Poland, Bahrain, Egypt, Taiwan, Turkey, and Spain. To witness the proceedings, the Navy invited many distinguished guests, including a much younger Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and legendary Hollywood Western actor John Wayne.

All seemed to be going as planned. The speeches were completed and as tradition dictated, a lady crashed the ceremonial champagne bottle against the hull as a signal for the launch. Nothing happened. The shipbuilders were confounded and the Navy embarrassed. Everything was tried to budge the vessel, but nothing worked. It was becoming a public relation’s nightmare! It was here that Wayne stepped up to save the day, as he had pretended to do in countless films over the pass 40 years. Coolly striding to the 3600 ton warship, the maverick actor known as “the Duke” gave Perry a gentle shove, probably in jest, and the giant vessel moved. Into the water slipped the frigate to the great astonishment of all those present!

The USS Perry went on to serve her country with distinction until she was decommissioned in 1997. Already suffering from the effects of cancer, actor and American legend John Wayne died at UCLA Medical Center on June 11, 1979.
