You want to reach your Golden Wedding Anniversary? Than laugh with your partner, a lot. A great deal of evidence suggests that this is one of the strongest predictors of relationship health. One study conducted by Krystyna Aune in 2002 explored the relationship between the level of playfulness in a relationship and relationship satisfaction, and not surprisingly she found that the more couples incorporated lighthearted and playful behavior into their relationship patterns the happier they reported being. Aune found that people who were quick to use playfulness and humor in life tended to have higher levels of self-esteem, and also experienced higher levels of other positive emotions in their lives such as joy as a result of their lighthearted attitude towards life.

This movie includes a great deal of material of how humor bonds people together and is one of the tools that promotes a healthy sexual life for people, even as their physical bodies may be in decline. With the fastest growing population in the United States now consisting of people over 85, this film is a must see for anyone who wishes to better understand how the things such as our sexuality that make us uniquely human don’t simply disappear as we age. The film also makes the point that having a good sense of humor is one of the strongest allies we have as our physical bodies change, even as we cope with the changes and loss that aging inevitably brings.

Through my own work in Nursing Homes throughout the years, I can assure you that sexuality is indeed one of the last things to go, and many people who work in Nursing Homes will tell you that in terms of sexuality these places are often more like college dormitories than hospitals. talk about how romance often thrives in a Nursing Home, and as a caregiver this was always inspiring and often deeply touching to see. Much like is probably true for Junior Highs, dating events, nightclubs, and any other places people go to meet one another, humor is the catalyst that often brings people together.

On a personal note to emphasize this idea, my grandfather Hank just passed away at the age of 90. He was one of the funniest men I ever knew, and his outlook on life helped instill in me a lighthearted template for life which I hope I will always be able to remember. He was married to my grandmother Lee for 67 years, and I have no doubt that the humor and laughter between them was one of the best reasons they were able to reach their Golden wedding anniversary and much, much more. A person could fill their home with books on maintaining relationships, but not find a simpler recipe for marital success than being able to consistently laugh at life’s little moments together. This was the secret of my grandparent’s success, and a lesson I hope I’ll continue to remember.

It was 12am at night, in the middle of winter and I was chatting to a new employee at a gas station who was being shown the ropes as he was going to do the graveyard shift on two nights over the weekend each week. I was to do Sunday to Thursday and he do Friday and Saturday as a part time job. A song came on the radio and you guessed it, it was Billy Joel’s Piano Man. As I started to sing it with gusto I saw this man smile and listen to me.

But first, let me digress.

A year before I had been at an Amway convention and a speaker had spoken on dreams and how to reach yours. He was speaking on how to turn a dream into reality and how to set goals and achieve them. He said that speaking your dreams out is powerful but putting them on paper is even more powerful. He said to try it out, we should go home and write down a list of ten people we would like to meet in person. Well that was twenty five years ago and so I don’t know if I wrote down ten names but I wrote down two singers that I loved. One was Peter Garrett from an Australian band called Midnight Oil, a born again Christian who never preached to people, but who sung songs of justice and issues, and another name I wrote was Billy Joel.

Well, four weeks after I wrote the name Peter Garrett on my list I was taking my next door neighbour up to Manly beach to get her Methadone (heroin substitute) for the day. We had parked the car and were walking across the street and crossing without lights and so we were running. I was watching for cars and when I got midway across the street I looked up and Peter Garrett was standing right next to me waiting for the “walk” sign to light up. I smiled up at him and said, “Hi Peter”, and then rushed across the street without waiting for the “walk” sign.

I didn’t even wait for him to say hello. Man I was pumped up! Only a month before I had put him on my list and I had already met him. It gave me hope. I could have engaged him then and chatted till the “walk” sign flashed for a minute or two. The list proved it was possible. I hope to meet Peter in my future.

Okay so about 10 months or so I am speaking to my friend in the gas station. It’s a Tuesday night, I have done all my jobs and there is nothing to do but to wait for customers who are up late.

When I finish singing the song, I ask him why he claps.

He says, “I know Billy. I knew him when he played in that bar where people put bread in his jar and said Man what are you doing here!”

ie

And the piano, it sounds like a carnival

And the microphone smells like a beer

And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar

And say, “Man, what are you doin’ here.”

The guy was an American and I am a person that tells the truth and so I don’t often think anyone is telling me lies, but this was amazing.

“How long ago was that? I asked.

He answered and gave me a year which I forget twenty five years later.

“Tell me how do you know him?

“Well I used to work in a suit shop in Rhode Island New York in a shopping plaza. In fact I worked in the suit shop and Eddie Murphy owned a shop and worked selling shoes. I would sell them a suit and send them to Eddy for new shoes. And Eddy used to sell new shoes and send them to me for a suit. And at lunch time we used to go down to this bar where Billy Played.”

I think that’s what he said. Perhaps they went down at night as it says 9pm at night, but I am sure he said it was their local bar. Perhaps they went on Friday nights and that was after the working week and when Billy Played, but nonetheless, Billy played at the bar they always went to for lunch.

In fact Eddy Murphy, the comedian got a stand-up routine on a show called American Bandstand over there while he was working at the shop and that’s where he made it big in the USA. It was that national appearance that started it big for Eddy Murphy and soon enough he sold his shop as Billy sings here in a song called “My Life”

Got a call from an old friend

We used to be real close

Said he couldn’t go on the American way

Closed the shop, sold the house

Bought a ticket to the West Coast

Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A

That was Eddy Murphy his friend. Well another friend he was really close to was the guy I was training. Billy Joel came to Sydney while I worked and this guy said I could come and I turned him down. This was six months later when I got the invite. It was enough to be invited and to know more about Billy as this guy and I talked about Billy Joel, my Childhood idol, all night that night.

One day on a DVD, I am going to send Billy Joel a copy of my singing this Piano Man as a cover before I preach a sermon on it. So with no further ado let me give you a few minutes on what I might say in half an hour and twenty scriptures on that DVD.

It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday

The Regular crowd shuffles in

There’s an old man sitting next to me

Makin’ love to his tonic and gin

This is not a work night like Friday night. This is a party night. The crown is regular in two ways, it’s around 9pm people start to get to town and leave between 2am and 4am. On a Friday they start about 6pm and go home about 12 am. Saturday night starts late and slow and finishes busy in the taxi game. Friday night starts busy and finishes slow.

So they come in when Billy is only a few minutes at the Piano and if they don’t come every week they come a lot because they are regulars at this bar. And why? Because Billy is fantastic and this is a very classy bar.

He says, “Son, can you play me a memory

I’m not really sure how it goes

But it’s sad and it’s sweet and I knew it complete

When I wore a younger man’s clothes”

A nice man, a person of great character is a man that treats an old drunken wino with the same respect as a businessman. But anyway this man has class because he is drinking tonic and gin. But Billy mixes and can speak with all classes as we know in uptown girl that he was of poor stock and his uptown girl was a girl from money and class. Billy has never forgotten his poor roots.

The guy asks for Billy to play a request. A cover. Not one of Billy’s repertoire but hopefully one Billy has learned to play at one time. And I reckon if Billy knew the song by heart he would have played it for the man. Why else would this be a lyric in his song? Because Billy would play requests if he could.

Well, we’re all in the mood for a melody

It’s Saturday. No work. Work and the drudgery of work has been forgotten and Billy is so good a player and he plays so damn good that you cannot help stop talking to your friend and start to sing, clap along and dance. Some entertainers are worn out and some just do a great job and make you feel good.

Billy was the latter.

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine

He gets me my drinks for free

And he’s quick with a joke or to light up your smoke

But there’s someplace that he’d rather be

He says, “Bill, I believe this is killing me.”

As the smile ran away from his face

“Well I’m sure that I could be a movie star

If I could get out of this place”

Now I don’t know the fate of John. I never asked my friend this. John either talked and cried and died crying about a future he could have had if he had the courage to go after his dream and leave paid work behind. Many actors in Hollywood and New York are serving drinks, waiting tables, and washing dishes hoping for that break. Perhaps John is going to auditions each week and just can’t crack a part or perhaps he is just dreaming and yearning for something better. I wonder if John wrote his dreams down or simply wished in his head. He certainly told Billy and if a reporter asked Billy today, Billy would know if John ever made it to a film that the USA saw.

Now Paul is a real estate novelist

Who never had time for a wife

And he’s talkin’ with Davy, who’s still in the navy

And probably will be for life

Paul has it together. He is in a good occupation that pays well if your apply yourself and you are honest. And he is not talking about his dream he is writing novels. I have written two novels. One in my cab between passengers. One in six weeks after my first breakdown while I was trying to get my head back together on medication. I wrote the second to prove to myself I wasn’t just a one hit wonder.

Davy might be sad, or perhaps his happy, but he is in a secure government job that will have him till he retires on a good pension.

I worked in a good government job for three and a half years and left because I wanted to be able to make it in a private occupation with my payroll clerk experience, not work in a lazy job where they can’t sack you. It takes guts to leave a government job and that security and you have to have a better life you are shooting for to try. Billy reckons this guy has not much ambition to further himself. The novelist isn’t guaranteed of being published but he is practicing his craft and if he gets good enough he will get published, but he isn’t too proud to chat to a regular guy who hasn’t big ambitions.

And the waitress is practicing politics

As the businessmen slowly get stoned

Yes, they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness

But it’s better than drinkin’ alone

The waitress is going places and the businessman is letting his hair down and maybe trying just to relax with that herb so many people use for that, and yet saying this drug reference says that Billy is fine with people smoking drugs if they chose and the drug reference in the song gives the song coolness among people who like to get stoned also.

Yet everyone here in the pub he has mentioned is lonely. I have been lonely with a hurt and broken personality for much of my life and if you drink alone at home you really are sad and sorry. Better to drink with drinkers and speak about lost opportunities and the dreams you have if only you could get the courage to go after your dream.

Well Billy did do it. He was from downtown and married the Uptown girl and became a superstar. He had more then empty dreams and though this is Billy’s most popular and most requested this is a song of Billy’s past and he does not like singing about his past. Saturday night is a day where your forget about the bills , the mortgage, your boring job and like catching a good movie, drinking and singing along with Billy helps you let your hair down and forget about life for a while.

I dream of meeting Billy. I know one day I will sing his Piano Man to a good crowd and then do a good sermon using it as my points. Perhaps that will have Billy laugh. Perhaps he might even see this article on Google.

Yes, work your job, work your job for the bills, but work part time on your dream, commit your dream to paper, make plans and follow the plan.

I can already sing Billy’s songs pretty good with plenty of feeling and they all have meaning for me. Even though Billy losing his wife broke my heart as a young man, it set me up to lose my own wife. It’s no good talking about the what if I had done that when you’re an old person.

It’s not good to drink in a pub each week and wish that you could leave the pub and act.

What if I told you could read a woman’s mind like an FBI agent just by asking her a couple questions? You’d probably think I’m crazy right? You’d cry foul because we all know that every women is different and no two people are exactly the same. Yeah, we’re all humans and have similar instincts. But we all don’t like the same clothes or colors or foods.

You think: if all women can’t agree on something like the best color, how can they all be interested in the same traits from a man? Some women want a guy that’s funny or cocky or even Gothic. And what you’re thinking is correct. Not all women are alike.

BUT, and this is a big BUT, you can section them off into 8 different profiles or ‘types’. A very smart man named Vin DiCarlo has figured out that there are 8 distinctive ‘types’ of women in the world and each ‘type’ of woman thinks in a very specific way.

For example, DiCarlo surveyed over 1,000 women and found that approximately 50% of women liked to be approached with a compliment, while the other 50% hated it. 2 different reactions to the same stimuli. 2 different ‘types’ of girls.

So, think about this: if you could figure out what ‘type’ of woman she was, and knew the characteristics of each ‘type’ you would know A LOT about a woman. And, you could effectively read her mind and know what she was thinking based on her ‘profile.’ This is the exact same type of thing the FBI does when they’re looking a criminal. They gather clues about the suspect and try to fit him into a profile that they can use to narrow their search.

Until now, you couldn’t get this information about women unless you stole their diaries. But these recent insights into female psychology and the recent discovery of 8 specific ‘types’ of women have cracked the female code. All you have to do to ‘read a woman’s mind’ is figure out what type of woman she is and then just start talking about things specific to her type. Simple as that.

Learning chords is one of the basic piano lessons. There are some prerequisites however that you should be proficient with before proceeding to chords. Before you learn about the chords you must know what a keyboard is comprised of. There are keys in black and white. On an 88 keys keyboard the left most key is an A. This is the lowest note on a keyboard. If we notice, the black keys are arranged in groups of two and three alternatively.

There is group of two black keys and then there is group of three black keys. Each left black key of the two black keys group is called C. In the middle of the piano there are two black keys and that left black one is called middle C. Music notes run in group of 7. Starting from middle C there is C, D, E, F, G and then again A and B. When we move from C to right side like CDEFGAB the notes are called up notes and when we move backward like CBAGFED the notes are called down notes. CDEFGAB is called the major scale. The 7 white keys (CDEFGAB) together with the 5 black ones make a set of 12. Each black key has two names; sharp and flat. The black key on left of a white key makes sound one half of that white key and is called flat for that note.

Similarly each black key on right of a white key makes sound higher by one half of that white key. Suppose there is black key between C and D. Now if we move from C to right and press black key it will be C Sharp. One the other hand if we move from D to left and press same black key it will be D flat. One you learn about the notes on a scale you are ready to move to the next step i.e. learning about the chords.

A chord is basically a combination of notes played together. Once you get proficient with how to play the notes and have practiced about the note and their position you can play chords easily. There are simple chords with 3 notes and then there are 4 to 5 and even more complicated chords. While learning about the chords you must know that there are three basic chords associated with each key namely major, minor and seventh chord. For instance there will a C major, C minor and seventh C chord and so on.

These chords make use of both white and black ones of the keyboard. For example C major is C, E, G. C minor chord is C, E flat, G and a C seventh chord is C, E, G, B flat. Learning the three basic chords for each key (CDEFGAB) is likely to build a solid foundation of your knowledge of Piano and you can then move to more complicated chords.

Slowly, my thoughts lingered to refreshing movies with music – The Sound of Music, Carousel, South Pacific, Camelot, My Fair Lady, and Mary Poppins among others. Yes, I particularly mean movie musicals!

Soon enough my memories wafted to the greatest musical collaboration of all time, that of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the most successful legendary songwriting team in musical theatre history. Rodgers wrote the music, and Hammerstein wrote the lyrics. Most of the stage musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein were made into movies, also with phenomenal success, in particular, The Sound of Music.

At 16, Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) initially wrote a number of successful songs with Lorenz Hart, a partnership that lasted for over twenty years. Hart died in 1943. The same year Rodgers and Hammerstein (1895-1960) teamed up and started their first musical collaboration with Oklahoma! based on a play called ‘Green Grow the Lilacs’ by Lynn Riggs. Oklahoma! is very different from most musicals written up to that time where they were mainly songs and comedy, with little plot. Usually, the songs had little to do with the story. Oklahoma! has a plot. The songs either help move the plot along or help the audience understand the characters. The story is partly fun, and has a serious side too. This is because Rodgers’s background was mostly in the old-style, “fun” musicals, while Hammerstein’s background was in opera and operetta–more “serious” types of music. When Rodgers worked with Hart, he wrote the music first, and then Hart wrote the lyrics. But in this new team, Hammerstein wrote the lyrics first and Rodgers created the music to fit.

Audiences loved Oklahoma!. It played on Broadway for 2,248 performances, breaking all Broadway box office records for shows until that time. It also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1944, which changed the face of stage musicals – an emotional story told through music, dance and lyrics as never before. After Oklahoma! Rodgers and Hammerstein went on to create Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music. The impact on these shows for Broadway and amateur stage, both in terms of popular appeal and their influence on other writers, was overwhelming.

Carousel, the duo’s next big hit in 1945, had an even more dramatic plot than Oklahoma!. Instead of the usual overture before the show begins, the show opens with the whole cast performing a ballet as the orchestra plays.

South Pacific, written in 1949, and based on ‘Tales from the South Pacific’ by novelist James A. Michener, is set during World War II. It has the most serious plot of any Rodgers and Hammerstein show because it confronts both war and racism. South Pacific also won the Pulitzer Prize.

The King and I is about conflicts between cultures. It is based on a true story about Anna Leonowens, a British governess who went to Siam (now Thailand) to teach the king’s children. Anna finds life in Siam very different from what she is accustomed to, but she and the king come to like each other despite their differences.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final collaboration was The Sound of Music, in 1959. It is also based on a true story, about a young novice nun who becomes the governess for seven children of a widower, Captain Von Trapp. This musical also has a serious side–it is set in the days of Nazi Germany, and the Von Trapp family’s freedom is at stake. The beautiful song “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music was the last song Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together. Hammerstein died of cancer on August 23, 1960. After Hammerstein’s death, Rodgers wrote other shows with other lyricists, including Stephen Sondheim, but none reached the heights of his work with Hammerstein.

For always, I will relish the most beautiful and poignant legacy of their partnership. How can I forget such immortal, refreshing, and most wonderful hit songs on stage and film history as these:

Oklahoma! – “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” “Many a New Day,” “I Can’t Say No,” and the final rousing chorus of “Oklahoma!” itself.

Carousel – “You’ll Never Walk alone” and “If I loved You.”

South Pacific – “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” “This Nearly was Mine,” “Younger Than Springtime” and “Some Enchanted Evening.”

The King and I – “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Something Wonderful” and “Hello, Young Lovers.”

The Sound of Music – “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “The Lonely Goatherd”, as well as the title song.

Who knows, we might yet have another Rodgers and Hammerstein in the making, an anodyne to all these turbulence and disarray in our world today. As I write this, nearby, my sound system is playing Carousel, softly beckoning me to join in. That I never cease listening to their music and at times singing their songs is a privilege. I’m at it now, ” … how I loved you… if I loved you.”

Alberto Beto Perez is the creator of Zumba. Beto a native of Colombia (South America) is the founder of Zumba and director of the national Master trainers team.
