This article is about “Languages with the most words”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Languages with the most words”:

Although there have been many studies undertaken analysing the most commonly used words in the English language and producing lists ordering words by their supposed frequency, none of these lists can be truly definitive. This is because it would be impossible to analyse every example of English language in use today; although many written texts can easily be obtained, it is challenging to collect numerous and varied enough samples of spoken language.

The list below was created by analysing the Oxford English Corpus, the very large set of texts used by the makers of the Oxford English Dictionary and by the Oxford University Press’ language research programme to carry out hypothesis testing and statistical analysis. This specific text corpus contains more than two billion words, originating from a wide range of sources, from specialist journals and literary novels to everyday magazines and newspapers and the language used in weblogs, emails and chatrooms. The list is also representative of a study undertaken by Oxford Online, in association with the Oxford English Dictionary.

It is important to note that many of the words listed are lemmas; that is, they actually represent more than one word. For example, the item “be”, as the base form of a verb, also includes all the occurrences of “are”, “be”, “was” and “is”.

According to this study, therefore, the ten most common words in the English language are “the”, “be”, “to”, “of”, “and”, “a”, “in”, “that”, “have” and “I” respectively. Prepositions are particularly popular, with “for”, “on”, “with”, “at”, “by”, “from”, “up”, “out”, “into”, and “over” also appearing in the top one hundred most frequent words.

Conjunctions also appear regularly, with “as”, “but”, “or”, “also” and “because”, as well as “and” in the top one hundred. The other most frequent word class is pronouns, the most common examples of which, after “I”, are “it”, “he”, “you”, “this”, “his”, “they”, “we”, “her”, “she” and “my”, which is only number 34. Amazingly, the items in this list of the one hundred most commonly used English words make up fifty percent of all the words in the Oxford English Corpus.

The ten most commonly used nouns are “time”, “person”, “year”, “way”, “day”, “thing”, “man”, “world”, “life” and “hand” respectively, while the most frequent verbs are “be”, “have”, “do”, “eat”, “sleep”, “drink”, “put”, “keep”, “run” and “walk”. The ten adjectives used most frequently, according to this study, are “good”, “first”, “new”, “last”, “long”, “great”, “little”, “own”, “other” and “old”.

Interestingly, this list of the English language’s most commonly used words is not as readily subject to change as one may think. Although changes in society and culture and ever increasing globalisation are constantly shaping and changing our language and forcing our vocabulary and linguistic habits to evolve, most of the most frequently used words are those that are timeless or are functional words, such as pronouns, which have no need to be altered.

Indeed, although most of the words constituting today’s English language do not have Old English roots, but stem from other languages brought over by invaders throughout the history of the language’s development, nearly all of the one hundred most frequently used words do indeed come from Old English. While, for example, words such as “telegram” are ultimately bound to die out, the commonly used “year”, “world” and “life” are far from redundant.

This article is about “Languages online victoria”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Languages online victoria”:

The Swedish language is not really difficult to learn by an English language speaker. First of all, there are cognates or related words: ‘katt’ for cat, ‘hund’ for hound. Secondly, unlike the Romance languages and German, you don’t have to bother remember any conjugation of verb.

It’s one of the easiest languages to master really (one year would be enough, in fact), but you can even master it a faster. Living in a Swedish household or community was perhaps the most effective means of acquiring the language faster in the olden times, aside from taking a Swedish spouse, but today you can learn the language even without going out of your home!

Learning a second language, especially one that is not really spoken by many, can be a challenge in terms of motivation. You may need to struggle your way to language mastery by finding your interest first in the language lessons, which includes the correct Swedish grammar, vocabulary, its culture, and finally speaking it as if it’s the language you were born to speak.

Well, there’s actually more to Sweden than cold climate: history (Vikings, royalty, medieval adventures, battles, empires), Norse mythology, breathtaking landscapes, Volvos (safest cars in the world and no longer boxy), Ericsson mobile gizmos, Nobel Prize and Ingrid Bergman, to list a few. Here’s more: once you’ve learned Swedish, you’re not far acquiring two other languages – Norwegian and Danish.

Digital technology has given us means to learn new languages much easier than an Arab could learn Chinese centuries ago. Easy, learner-friendly approaches and the use of advanced gizmos make one’s language learning more accurate and faster. So even if you are located thousands of miles away from Sweden, you can learn how to tell Victoria Silvstedt in her native language how good she looks in her bikinis.

No need to dig up some dust-covered language books (if there’s anything about Swedish) in the local library or drive to the bookstore. For your convenience, online vendors are facilitating downloads of Swedish language learning audio books. The internet helps you look for the most efficient program you can download into your computer.

There are several programs online and among them, the Pimsleur approach is one of the most easy to absorb. It is designed to help you learn the exact words and phrases used in speech. This software may include spoken audios, games and even proficiency tests.

Since it is available in a downloadable format, you can burn it into CDs, DVDs or Blu-Ray disks and play it in your laptop, car stereo or handy disk player. Or you can load it straight into your pocket computer, iPod or smart phone.

So after purchasing one, you can immediately start your language learning progress even if you have a lot of things to do. You can listen to it while in the tub, while jogging, hitting the treadmill, gardening, doing the laundry or commuting to or from work. Whether you learn it alone or with a company, it doesn’t matter. You control your learning pace.

The Pimsleur Swedish Compact, a five-hour unabridged program, costs less than $40, way cheaper than living for a year in Stockholm. It contains ten 30-minute lessons or modules designed by the renowned language learning guru Dr. Paul Pimsleur. You can find the audio book package at The Talking Book Store or other online vendors.

Although interacting with native Swedish speakers is still the most effective way to learn the language, it also entails tough expenditures and social costs. So why not go digital and learn Swedish in no time?

This article is about “Countries language”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Countries language”:

Among the languages spoken across the world Spanish is one of the most popular languages. There are no less than twenty Spanish speaking countries in the world. Such countries use Spanish as their first language and they are spread over five different continents in the world.

Countries that use Spanish as their first language are not uniform in their culture, heritage, economic, political, and social patterns. Yet the common bondage between them is the language that ties them together.

Millions of people speak Spanish and millions are interested in learning the great language. Good news for such people is that one can find free Spanish lessons on the Internet. Conversely they can also join some language coaching centers locally but that will be a paid service.

Some of the countries that have adopted Spanish language as their state language are Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, and Equatorial Guinea, besides Spain itself. With so many countries speaking Spanish, it could be a great thing to learn and use it during travels to those countries. Spanish as a language can become the carrier of world tours in the process.

Spanish or the Castilian is basically a language of Romance and comes under the Ibero Romance Group of languages. Evolving out of multiple dialects and languages in the northern fringe of the Iberian Peninsula during the tenth century, it spread gradually outward to various countries. Ultimately it became the principal language in the entire Spanish empire.

Origin of the Spanish language is linked to Latin that is the basis of all the romance languages in the world. Apart from Latin, the language has also been significantly influenced by Arabic language.

From sixteenth century onwards, Spanish was adopted by Americans and the influence of writers like Cervantes helped it grow in popularity considerably.

Spanish is recognized as one of the official languages of United Nations. Spanish speaking countries also are linked to other international organization that recognize the language officially such as the European Union, Organization of Ibero American states, Union of South American Nations, Latin Union, Caricom as well as the North American free Trade Agreement.

This article is about “Overall organization of Politics and the English Language “, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Overall organization of Politics and the English Language “:

The style of your organization is unique. However, the differences with other styles are minor. There are not too many ways in which a company unfolds itself into the (near) future. We all have to solve problems. We are to compete and cooperate. We are to build equipment and systems. We organize activities. We interact with clients and sell products or services.

Still there is this unique voice that resonates between the walls of your organization. The tone of this voice can alter, but much of it is as it is. Yours!

Style is a way of life. The way you organize activities, plan projects, manage people, solve conflicts, and react on disasters.

And with all that, style shows you the way. Like a tradition. Like a ritual. It is a way of conduct. As a habit; the repetition of activities.

Like the house-style is defined by rules, your organizational style also responds to rules. Those rules are tacit. It is the implicit knowledge of the way your organization “organizes.”

If you read the style guide of the economist - – which refers to the guide written by George Orwell (Politics and the English Language: http://www.k-1.com/Orwell/index.cgi/work/essays/language.html) – - you experience a guide that shows you part of your writing solution. It directs you.

Therefore, the word “Guide” combines very powerful with the word “Style.”

A “Management Style Guide” guides your organization, not only management. It shows the rules that you implicitly use. Rules that have solved conflict in previous situations and that have produced case-law. Situation you have dealt with before. And solved. Most of the time you can just follow that way…

Which is the best language to learn? Which is the easiest?

Two different questions, often uttered in the same breath. But that’s okay, because there will be only one answer. Whichever language you wholeheartedly choose to study will be both the best and the easiest. However, here’s some help choosing.

The choices.

Here is the Modern Language Association’s 2002 list of the most commonly studied languages at university level in the United States. I have not included ancient languages like Latin, Biblical Hebrew, or Sanskrit, special purposes languages like American Sign Language, or U.S. heritage languages, like Hawaiian or Navajo since the choice of those languages follows a different dynamic:

1. Spanish

2. French

3. German

4. Italian

5. Japanese

6. Chinese

7. Russian

8. Arabic

9. Modern Hebrew

10. Portuguese

11. Korean

12. Vietnamese

13. Hindi/Urdu

14. Swahili

Difficulty, according to Uncle Sam

First, consider some cold facts. The U.S. State Department groups languages for the diplomatic service according to learning difficulty:

Category 1. The “easiest” languages for speakers of English, requiring 600 hours of classwork for minimal proficiency: the Latin and Germanic languages. However, German itself requires a bit more time, 750 hours, because of its complex grammar.

Category 2. Medium, requiring 1100 hours of classwork: Slavic languages, Turkic languages, other Indo-Europeans such as Persian and Hindi, and some non-Indo-Europeans such as Georgian, Hebrew and many African languages. Swahili is ranked easier than the rest, at 900 hours.

Category 3. Difficult, requiring 2200 hours of study: Arabic, Japanese, Korean and the Chinese languages.

Will you get a chance to practice this language?

Now, consider another important factor: accessibility. To be a successful learner you need the chance to hear, read and speak the language in a natural environment. Language learning takes an enormous amount of concentration and repetition, which cannot be done entirely in the classroom. Will you have access to the language where you live, work and travel?

The 14 most popular courses according to a combination of linguistic ease and accessibility.

1. Spanish. Category One. The straightforward grammar is familiar and regular. It is also ubiquitous in the Americas, the only foreign language with a major presence in the insular linguistic environment of the U.S. Chances to speak and hear it abound. It is the overwhelming favorite, accounting for more than fifty percent of language study enrollment in the MLA study.

2. French. Category One. Grammatically complex but not difficult to learn because so many of it’s words have entered English. For this vocabulary affinity, it is easy to attain an advanced level, especially in reading. It is a world language, and a motivated learner will find this language on the internet, in films and music.

3. German. Category One Plus. The syntax and grammar rules are complex with noun declensions a major problem. It is the easiest language to begin speaking, with a basic vocabulary akin to English. Abstract, advanced language differs markedly, though, where English opts for Latin terms. It values clear enunciation, so listening comprehension is not difficult.

4. Italian. Category One. It has the same simple grammar rules as Spanish, a familiar vocabulary and the clearest enunciation among Latin languages (along with Romanian). Italian skills are easily transferable to French or Spanish. You might need to go to Italy to practice it, but there are worse things that could happen to you. It is also encountered in the world of opera and classical music.

5. Russian. Category Two. This highly inflected language, with declensions, is fairly difficult to learn. The Cyrillic alphabet is not particularly difficult, however, and once you can read the language, the numerous borrowings from French and other western languages are a pleasant surprise. It is increasingly accessible.

6. Arabic. Category Three. Arabic is spoken in dozens of countries, but the many national dialects can be mutually incomprehensible. It has only three vowels, but includes some consonants that don’t exist in English. The alphabet is a formidable obstacle, and good calligraphy is highly valued and difficult to perfect. Vowels are not normally written (except in children’s books) and this can be an obstacle for reading. It is ubiquitous in the Muslim world and opportunities exist to practice it at every level of formality.

7. Portuguese. Category One. One of the most widely spoken languages in the world is often overlooked. It has a familiar Latin grammar and vocabulary, though the phonetics may take some getting used to.

8. Swahili. Category Two Minus. It includes many borrowings from Arabic, Persian, English and French. It is a Bantu language of Central Africa, but has lost the difficult Bantu “tones”. The sound system is familiar, and it is written using the Latin alphabet. One major grammatical consideration is the division of nouns into sixteen classes, each with a different prefix. However, the classes are not arbitrary, and are predictable.

9. Hindi/Urdu. Category Two. The Hindustani language, an Indo-European language, includes both Hindi and Urdu. It has an enormous number of consonants and vowels, making distinctions between phonemes that an English speaker will have difficulty hearing. Words often have clipped endings, further complicating comprehension. Hindi uses many Sanskrit loans and Urdu uses many Persian/Arabic loans, meaning that a large vocabulary must be mastered. Hindi uses the phonetically precise Devanagari script, created specifically for the language. Predictably, Urdu’s use of a borrowed Persian/Arabic script leads to some approximation in the writing system.

10. Modern Hebrew. Category Two. Revived as a living language during the nineteenth century, it has taken on characteristics of many languages of the Jewish diaspora. The resultant language has become regularized in grammar and syntax, and the vocabulary has absorbed many loan words, especially from Yiddish, English and Arabic. The alphabet has both print and script forms, with five vowels, not normally marked. Vowel marking, or pointing, is quite complex when it does occur. Sounds can be difficult to reproduce in their subtleties and a certain amount of liaison makes listening comprehension problematic. It is not very accessible outside of a religious or Israeli context.

11. Japanese. Category Three. Difficult to learn, as the vocabulary is unfamiliar, and the requirements of the sound system so strict that even the many words that have been borrowed from English, French and German will seem unrecognizable. With three different writing systems, it is forbiddingly difficult to read and write. Also, social constraints may impede useful interaction.

12. Chinese. Category Three. Whether your choice is Mandarin or Cantonese (the MLA survey does not make a distinction, oddly enough). It is the most difficult language on this list. It includes all of the most difficult aspects: unfamiliar phonemes, a large number of tones, an extremely complex writing system, and an equally unfamiliar vocabulary. Personal motivation is absolutely essential to keep the student on track. On the positive side, it is easy to find, since Chinese communities exist throughout the world, and Chinese language media, such as newspapers, films and TV, are present in all these communities.

13. Vietnamese. Category Three. This language belongs to an unfamiliar family of languages, but it does borrow much vocabulary from Chinese (helpful if you already speak Chinese!). It has six tones, and a grammar with an unfamiliar logic. It’s not all bleak, however, Vietnamese uses a Latin derived alphabet. The chances of speaking this language are not high, though there are 3 million speakers in the USA.

14. Korean. Category Three. Korean uses an alphabet of 24 symbols, which accurately represent 14 consonants and 10 vowels. However, the language also includes 2000 commonly used Chinese characters for literary writing and formal documents. Speech levels and honorifics complicate the learning of vocabulary, and there is liaison between words, making them hard to distinguish. The grammar is not overly complicated and there are no tones. It borrows many Chinese words, but the language is unrelated to other languages of Asia.

The most important factor of all: personal motivation

The third, most important factor is up to you. The easiest language to learn is the one that you are most motivated to learn, the one you enjoy speaking, the one with the culture that inspires you and the history that touches you spiritually. It is useless to try to learn a language if you are not interested in the people who speak it, since learning a language involves participating in its behaviors and identifying with its people.

So, consider all three factors: motivation, accessibility and linguistic ease, in that order, and come up with the final list yourself. The bad news is that no language is really easy to learn, but the good news is that we humans are hard wired for a great amount of linguistic flexibility, as long as we know how to turn on the learning process. If the rewards and benefits of the language are clear to you, you will be able to get those rusty language synapses sparking in your head and start the words rolling. Bonne chance!

The English language has one of the largest vocabulary among the world’s languages, with close to one million word items estimated to be available in its arsenal. As such, mastering the English vocabulary typically takes a very long time, especially for those starting their English education from scratch.

Despite that, gaining a good enough mastery of the English lexicon isn’t an impossible task. In fact, if you put in the time for study and use the proper tools, you might just surprise yourself with the amount of vocabulary you find yourself equipped with.

One way of enriching your facility with the English language is to write in the vernacular on a frequent basis, all while employing new words within your sentences every time. Whenever you sit down to write something in English, whether an email or a essay, put the thesaurus included with your language software to good use, employing it to help you discover new words to express your ideas.

While vocabulary mastery isn’t the easiest thing in the world, it’s definitely something you can integrate into your everyday life, making it an achievable goal to aim for. Apart from the exhaustive thesaurus, writing software (such as Whitesmoke) usually includes a suggestion feature that recommends replacement words and phrases, for both clarity and better reading.

As a matter of fact, since English has been very prominent and common to use, learning English can might as well help in order to understand people even if they came from different races with different languages.

This article is about “Most useful languages for fbi”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Most useful languages for fbi”:

While the Rosetta Stone Japanese learning system is the largest selling language software program, the Pimsleur language system is one of the longest selling systems. Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone share some common elements, but Pimleur also includes elements that appear to be at least theoretically opposed to their competitor’s system.

Both Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone take a scientific approach to teaching foreign languages. They are both based on well-tested linguistic and psychological learning models. In particular, they share the belief that languages are best learned from the ground up in the same way that children learn their native language. Neither system wastes time with a lot of translation or grammar lessons. They both jump in and teach the student the spoken language.

Where the Pimsleur method differs from the Rosetta Stone method is that while Rosetta Stone, theoretically at least, opposes the behaviorist (or behavioralist) approach to teaching, Pimsleur actively employs it and has historically used it as part of their marketing strategy. Dr. Paul Pimsleur introduced his language teaching technique over forty years ago, at the height of behaviorism’s popularity.

At its most fundamental level, behaviorism takes a mechanistic view of human behavior. We are basically automatons who respond to stimuli and lack any unique and meaningful human qualities. The strict behaviorist believes, for example, that free will is an illusion.

While a more humanistic approach to both learning and psychology has been adopted in more recent years, nobody denies the effectiveness of many behaviorist-based models, including Dr. Pimsleur’s. Two of the Pimsleur system’s techniques for memorization and retention are particularly noteworthy.

The first of these methods is derived from the “Principle of Anticipation.” What this means is that the learner must anticipate the answer to a question rather than have the answer given to them time and time again until it “sticks.” Dr. Paul Pimsleur, creator of the Pimsleur language learning technique, called this type of interactive learning an “input/output” versus a passive learning technique. While they don’t exactly like to give Dr. Pimsleur credit for it, most if not all modern language learning programs also employ this technique.

Another one of Dr. Pimsleur’s contributions to language teaching is called “graduated recall.” When we learn a new word for the first time, we will only remember it for a minute or two, no matter how many times it is repeated to us. If the word is repeated to us at graduated intervals, more frequently at first and then at longer intervals, we will memorize the word more quickly and retain it longer than if it is repeatedly “drummed into our heads.”

The Pimsleur Japanese learning series of CD’s will appeal to those learners who like a thoroughly comprehensive audio teaching system that can quickly teach students how to speak and comprehend spoken Japanese. This method is used by the CIA and the FBI – hence the Pimsleur slogan: “Learn like a spy! Pass for a native!” At $274 per 30 lesson (30 minutes per lesson) unit, the entire suite of lessons costs over $800, so it is for “true believers” only. It does come with a money back guarantee, but you may want to try their short starter kit first. At just under $20, it contains the first 8 lessons and is designed for people who just want to understand some fundamental Japanese.

If you are interested in learning to read and write Japanese, you will have to look elsewhere. The Pimsleur Japanese learning system is entirely devoted to conversational Japanese. While the approach may be considered limited, Dr. Pimsleur believed that a language can be more thoroughly grasped if it is learned in this way, just as children master their spoken language long before they learn their alphabet.

Teaching students to quickly speak and comprehend conversational Japanese is where Pimsleur excels. While it may not appeal to all, it is a very effective system and has been used by businesses and government agencies for decades simply because it does its job so well.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has jurisdiction of over 200 different areas of federal law, these are grouped into three national security categories and five criminal categories. The FBI has a mission statement “to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats and to enforce the criminal laws of the United States”. So therefore, the majority of FBI works lies in investigation, and of course protection of United States citizens and our country.

The three national security Priorities of the FBI are Counter-terrorism, which includes international and domestic terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Then there is Counterintelligence, which includes counterespionage, counter proliferation, and economic espionage. The Federal Bureau of Investigation also handles Cyber Crime such as computer intrusions, online predators, piracy, and internet fraud.

The Criminal priorities of the FBI include public corruption, such as government fraud, election issues, and corrupt foreign policies. Civil Right issues like hate crimes, human trafficking, color of law, and freedom to access clinics. Organized crimes issues like mafia, Balkan, Sports bribery, Asian and African. The FBI is also responsible for white collar crimes like antitrust, fraud of bankruptcy, securities, health care, mortgage, telemarketing and corporate fraud. Then of course the FBI handles all major and violent crimes like art theft, bank robberies, cargo theft, and crimes against children, gangs, jewel thefts and serial killers.

Basically if you go to bed feeling safe at night from cyber criminals to violent gangs and mob bosses, and everything in between thank the FBI. They are the ones that keep our country safe from it all and more through their investigative teams, law enforcement and intelligence partners both in our country and around the world; they are working around the clock around the globe.

As of March 2010 the FBI employed a total of 33,925, this includes 13,492 specialist and 20,433 support personal. In the FBI are intelligence analysts, language specialist, scientist, forensic experts, technology experts and many others.

The budget of the FBI for 2010 is $7.9 billion this includes the $618 million to increase our programs in counter-terrorism, surveillance, weapons of mass destruction and white collar crimes.

The FBI literally has locations around the world; there are 56 field offices in the United States that are located throughout major cities. Then there are over 400 resident agencies in smaller cities across the United States, with Headquarters being in Washington D.C. On top of that there are also more than 60 international offices in U.S. embassies worldwide.

Since 9/11, the FBI and its amazing men and woman have implemented an organization that helps to protect and prevent terrorism. The National Security Branch was created to help prevent terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction both from being any kind of a threat to our country. It is run under the Senior FBI directive.

This article is about “Summary of politics and the english language”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Summary of politics and the english language”:

Today I’m going to be talking about Why I Write, a collection of essays by George Orwell. The book was written in 1946. This particular edition is from the Penguin Great Ideas series, and it features four essays. Along with Why I Write there is Politics and the English Language, also from 1946, The Lion and the Unicorn which was a campaign for socialism written in 1940, and a piece called A Hanging from 1931. Today though I’d just like to concentrate on Why I Write and Politics and the English Language, because they go very well together as two essays.

Moving firstly onto Why I Write, this was written in 1946 and it’s Orwell’s attempt to explain why he himself writes, and also by proxy why other people write too. He defines four reasons, and I think they’re as relevant today as when they were first written over 60 years ago. The first reason he defines as “sheer egoism”, which is the desire to seem clever, to be talked about, or to be remembered after death. I think sheer egoism really goes a long way to explaining a lot of writing on the web today, especially that done for marketing purposes.

Orwell’s second reason is what he calls the “aesthetic enthusiasm”, which is the perception of beauty in the external world or, on the other hand, beauty in words and their right arrangement. Most writers I think want to write nice flowing pieces in the same way that Orwell himself does: his writing isn’t extravagant, it’s quite plain but it’s very precise. He moves onto this subject later too in his other essay.

His third reason for why he writes is what he calls the “historical impulse”, which is the desire to see things as they are, to find out true facts and to store them up for the use of posterity.

His fourth reason is what he calls the “political purpose”. He says he’s using the word political in the widest possible sense here, meaning the desire to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other people’s idea of the kind of society they should strive after. Orwell in this particular essay claims that he’s not a political writer, but his other writing really doesn’t bear that out! In this book alone, The Lion and the Unicorn is a socialist polemic – some of that piece may not be as relevant today as it once was, but a lot of it is, especially the first part of The Lion and the Unicorn which is sometimes republished under the title England, This England. That’s still relevant, that’s worth reading.

If we move onto the second part of this book, let’s look at the essay Politics and the English Language from1946. This is really Orwell’s reaction against the kind of writing that was prevalent at the time, the very formal, stuffy types of writing that obfuscate the writer’s meaning rather than making it clear. He says that writers deliberately try to obscure what they’re saying to make it more palatable. In fact, the front cover quotation on the book isn’t from Why I Write – I think somebody got confused there – it’s from Politics and the English Language. The quotation, which is actually what drew me to the book in the first place, is “Political Language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” Quite!

Orwell’s six commandments, really, for writing as he sees it, are:

1. Never use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. He’s really talking here about not using cliches. People still do that today of course, and some people have even argued that using cliches can be a good thing because at least everyone already understands the meaning of the phrase.

2. Never use a long word where a short one will do. I think maybe that these days people are really coming round to this view. There’s the Campaign for Plain English, and the whole heap of faux-friendly informal writing that you get on gas bills and things – everyone’s your mate these days (even though they’re not!).

3. If it’s possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

4. This is one for the grammar people among you: never use passive where you can use the active! You either know what that means or you don’t! If you don’t, Wikipedia can explain.

5. Never use a foreign phrase, scientific word or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. The thing that really annoys me is when people write little Latin phrases when the English one would be fine, eg “in toto” instead of “in total” or “completely”.

6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous. That’s ironic in the way that Orwell has written this essay because he claims that people couch barbarous things such as war in political language. This essay was written in 1946. If you look at Tony Blair and the Iraq war, and at George Bush, you see exactly the same thing going on! There was a book written in 2007 called Unspeak by Steven Poole, which makes very much the same point too.

There’s not a great deal of depth to go into with the two essays in this book that I’ve discussed, I just wanted to make people aware that they exist. They’re worth a read. The first one, Why I Write, is only 10 pages long. The second, Politics and the English Language is only 18 pages long. They’re pretty easy to read, they flow quite nicely, but they are still relevant today, so I really recommend the book to anyone.

This article is about “Fancy terms in George Orwell “The Politics of the English Language”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Fancy terms in George Orwell “The Politics of the English Language”:

Occasionally it does the soul good to raise the Andy Rooney mask up in front of one’s face and shake it back and forth.

The English language, it seems to me, has been afflicted with a disease that I christen “syllablism.” It is the opposite of racism or sexism in that, rather than discriminating against something, syllablism in modern language discriminates in favor of useless, extra syllables.

For instance, somewhere along the way the perfectly useful word “active” became “proactive.” The simple “preventive” oddly became the bloated, pretentious “preventative.” A situation is no longer just a “problem”; it is “problematic.” It’s not good enough that they’re “facts”; they can be ratcheted up or down by the media to the status of “factoids.” Some no longer embrace a “method” to process information; they have to explain their “methodology.” It’s not “curing”; it’s “curative.” It’s not “new”; it’s “new-fangled.”

And, although it’s a bit off-kilter to the above examples, folks do love their “irregardless” — “regardless” of the fact that it is not a word!

These useless, extra syllables give the appearance of substance without actually imparting any real value. You could even argue that they represent a refutation of Einstein’s theory of relativity; i.e., not all mass can be converted into energy. Some of it just sits there.

In somewhat the same vein, when did we decide that it was acceptable to replace a word with a longer version, to in essence sound smarter … only to change the actual meaning of the word? Take the word “attorney” versus “lawyer.” Simply put, they don’t mean the same thing. Anyone who has passed the bar is a lawyer, but an attorney needs a client. The word implies a relationship. There are thousands of lawyers who do nothing all day (How many of you wanted this sentence to end there?) apart from research, but, still, they call themselves attorneys. Why? Because “attorney” is a three-syllable word and three-syllable words sound classier than two-syllable words.

See what I mean? Syllablism, plain and simple. The fancier the word, the more weight we think it carries. Consumers pay attention to more bling, and products must be new and improved and super sized to get us moving in desired directions. Syllablism is the embracing of bigger words because bigger is better. Syllablism is also pretentiousness at best, bordering on pompousness. And, sadly, this partiality for bigger words doesn’t always equate to the proper use of such words — or even real words at all!

I’ll close with thought-provoking quote from George Orwell’s “Politics and the English Language” (1946): “Bad writers, and especially scientific, political, and sociological writers, are nearly always haunted by the notion that Latin or Greek words are grander than Saxon ones, and unnecessary words like expedite, ameliorate, predict, extraneous, deracinated, clandestine, subaqueous, and hundreds of others constantly gain ground from their Anglo-Saxon numbers.”

Be watchful for creeping syllablism in your copy!

My passion is words and their power to inspire and bring about action, leading recently to fulfillment of a life-long dream — launch of my own consulting gig (http://www.polishedimage.com). As an editor, I’m even more persnickety than I am as an administrator. I have run point on monthly and quarterly magazines, website launches, flier and brochure development, advertising “creative,” and marketing initiatives, as well as the more mundane writing of HR- and admin-related manuscripts, handbooks, annual reports, etc. I have also written a great many speeches that have been extremely well received. My background includes a journalism degree and a career principally in the nonprofit community. And all of that has added up to some “thoughts” on words, writing and business.
