This article is about “Diary of a wimpy kid ideas projects”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Diary of a wimpy kid ideas projects”:

One of the best sources for easy, hands-on social studies activities is the History Pockets series of books. These books provide many ideas for history activities without much planning or preparation for the teacher. Each title in the series is packed with projects, which are all meant to be photocopied for every student. Best of all, most of the completed projects are flat so they can be stored in the students’ History Notebooks. The series consists of several titles for Grades 1-3, and then more titles for Grades 4-6.

Each book concentrates on one historical theme, and that main topic is then divided into several specific areas, such as Daily Life, Government, Religion, etc. In each of these areas you will find several projects that will fit into a “Pocket” made from folded construction paper. The Pockets are then hole-punched and bound together with string or ribbon to create a Pocket Book.

It is also an option to simply pick out several of the suggested social studies activities without making any pockets. Since the projects are not bulky, students could easily store individual ones in their own History Notebooks. However, even if you make the Pocket Book as instructed, it could still be put in a notebook with the same punched holes that were meant for binding the book together.

To give you a general idea of what each History Pocket book includes, let’s take an in-depth look at the Ancient Greece book for Grades 4-6. The activities start with decorated Facts pages, a Map activity, and a Timeline that is ready to cut out and assemble. The Timeline guides the students with illustrations and captions to add information as they progress. You will also find writing activities, creative booklets to put together and decorate, and plenty of low-fuss crafts. In this book, the crafts include making a Hoplite Shield, an Alexander the Great banner, Mosaic (paper) tiles, a booklet of Olympian gods, Greek coins, and more. The instructions for Knucklebones tells you first how to make the game and then how to play it.

This book is about 100 pages long, and most of those pages are meant to be photocopied for student use, giving you lots of ideas to choose from. The Greek book has instructions for 9 separate Pockets with activities on a different theme of Ancient Greece, including Daily Life, Religion, Military Power, Art & Architecture, Government, Sports & Entertainment, and more.

If you are looking for social studies activities for your classroom, you will want to see all the ideas in the History Pockets books. Your students can be actively engaged in your historical topic by making these creative projects. The books give a wide selection of crafts and save the teacher from excessive preparation time. This is a resource you will want to add to your history lesson plans.

This article is about “China xyz shoes”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “China xyz shoes”:

IMAGINE it is a terribly busy day, you are in Singapore, you have not slept well last night, and you have a bad headache. What would you reach for to put you out of this misery? Chances are, you’ll say “Panadol”.

“Branding is not about getting your prospects to choose you over your competition; it’s about getting your prospects to see you as the only solution to their problem,” says branding expert Rob Frankel. Your product has to be the solution to your niche customers. That means even if you are a car mechanic in a small town, you can be the “Panadol” for car owners living and working in the area, if you are good enough, and if you can market your brand well enough.

For decades, branding has been the domain of large corporations because of their relative ease to get on television and other media to blare out their brands. With limited media choices, consumers simply sit through all these advertising messages. Consumers can only recall the brand that has been advertised long and frequently enough, and that is what they’ll buy.

Not any more. We now have cable and satellite television, and more importantly, and the Internet to distract our attention. To create a strong brand in the Information Age, you need to know what are the components that make up a brand.

A good brand has three characteristics: visibility, positioning, and functionality. Without one of these, the brand will not work.

Visibility refers to the exposure rate the brand has on your target customers. Before the invention of cable, satellite, and the Internet, visibility can be easily achieved through television and print media advertisements. With more choices of media, visibility has somehow been eroded.

Brand visibility is a reason why some dot.coms failed to take off. If you are selling a consumer’s product, you can still place your products in a supermarket, a petrol kiosk or at bus stands. You can still create substantial visibility. In the online world, it’s either you log on, or log off.

To create visibility, many dot.coms turned to heavy advertising, which in turn burned up much of their capital until they went belly up eventually.

To complement the lack of visibility online, you can enhance your brand positioning. Positioning is the battle for the mind, according to marketing gurus, Al Ries and Jack Trout. It is a reflection of your products’ strengths and weaknesses in the customers’ minds. It is about how people perceive you to be, what you can do, and how you do it.

Like the Panadol example earlier, you may perceive that it cures headaches, is low-cost, and easily available. If it fails to work, you’ll simply perceive that you are very ill and need to see a doctor. Somehow, Panadol has achieved this kind of cult status in the minds of its customers even though it has few advertisements. It relies on good positioning.

According to Ries, brands are born with publicity, not advertising. With no advertising, The Body Shop has become a powerful global brand.

Brands are not confined to products. McDonald’s is a great brand, although not many people will admit it serves great food. It’s positioning is about being fast and clean. Its crew is always cheerful and says the exact same things from the time you enter the restaurant, to the time you receive your order.

There is also a functionality aspect to branding. Brands convey a certain message that describes their functionality. This is not to be confused with positioning. While both Chrysler and Mercedes Benz have the same functionality as car brands; they have very different brand positioning, even though they belong to the same company.

Once again, it is the perceived functionality of the brand that matters. Hush Puppy is a popular brand of shoes, but if they introduce Hush Puppy clothing, I don’t think they will achieve much success. Not many will warm up to the idea of wearing shoes on their bodies!

My guess is that Courts will be stronger with its furniture sales, but weaker in its electrical goods because its brand functionality is furniture. That means customers will shop at Courts when they want to buy furniture, and may perhaps add on a couple of electrical items before checking out.

The same principle applies to brand positioning as well. Courts is generally perceived as a low price, normal quality furniture retailer. When it ventures into upmarket furniture at Orchard Courts, it didn’t perform as well as it expected.

To get around the perception problem, NTUC Fair Price launched Liberty, an American-style supermarket that caters to people with more up-market taste. Even though Liberty sells NTUC’s house brand products as well, its brand position is more western, more upmarket and hip. The statue of Liberty is located in America’s fashion capital, New York. This is in contrast with Fair Price’s position as the favourite housewife’s haunt for fair-priced produce, and perhaps explains Liberty’s success in attracting expatriates to its supermarkets.

The plot thickens with the advent of the Internet, and every respectable company with a Web site. If you are the boss of XYZ Enterprises, and you have a Web site with the name XYZ.com, is it a brand, or just an online address?

According to Al Ries, the domain name is a brand. In addition, traditional companies should never use their company name or existing product name as their domain name because the public perception of a traditional company and that of an online one is very different. Online shoppers will never put traditional companies as their first-choice and vice versa for traditional shoppers. Ries disagrees with New Economy observers who believe brick and mortar companies can also sell online, and if such companies were to go online, they have to operate as a dot.com under a different name.

Rob Frankel suggests that a company should have as many domain names as possible and take on as many “personalities” as possible. Since brand visibility is weak online, why not create multiple domain names, each appealing to different groups of people?

The Internet has become so much a part of our lives that there will be no difference between online and offline shoppers. Consumers are expected to search items on the Internet, find the best product at the best price. Alternatively, they can shortlist a few vendors, go to the shops and inspect the products personally before buying.

E-brand

In this interpretation, the “E-brand” has lost its novelty, and the domain name is another channel of communication, distribution, and transaction. It is also the most cost-effective and efficient one as well. Hence, one-to-one marketing experts Peppers and Rogers suggest merchants offer multiple channels – physical shop front, telemarketing, catalogues, Web sites, online malls – so that the customer can choose whichever channel is the most convenient at the time of purchase.

Despite having poor brand visibility, the Internet offers the possibility of two-way communication. With one-way communication most companies have no idea on what goes through the minds of their audience. They gauge public perceptions by “guess-timation” at best.

Nowadays, you can get very accurate, and yet cost-effective feedback from your target audience through E-mail. Not only is E-mail a two-way communication channel, it also allows you to segment your markets right down to the last individual customer. You can be pro-active in engaging prospects and customers in explaining what your brand is all about and what functions will the brand fulfil. Subsequently, you can even achieve a pinpoint positioning of that brand to each individual customer.

Cost-effective Branding

The impact of the Information Age on brands is lower cost and higher accuracy in communicating the brand positioning and functionality. However, this does not mean that the playing field has been levelled.

Large companies still yield great influences over their markets because they have access to better customer data and have better resources to build efficient online communication channels with their audience. Small companies can also create strong brands to their niche clientele if they can convince its customers of its distinctive benefits over large companies.

Whether you succeed in building a strong brand in the Information Age will depend on your ability to identify unfulfilled gaps in the market and segment your target audience, and then increase your visibility levels through two-way communication and fine-tuning your brand positioning.

Since branding is a matter of managing perceptions and perceived values, the costs incurred should be seen as a secondary factor. The strongest brands will belong to companies that best communicate with customers and manage the clients’ perceptions.

This article is about “Bands that were influenced by boston”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Bands that were influenced by boston”:

Phish fans all over the world are still celebrating the reunion of one of the world’s most famous bands. The reunion tour started with three dates in March 2009 in Virginia’s Hampton Coliseum. Following this weekend, the band played thirteen further shows, making up a summer tour.

They were the headline act for the Bonaroo festival 2009 along other greats like Bruce Springsteen, The E Street Band, The Beastie Boys, and Nine Inch Nails. This led to a well-received fourteenth Phish album, released in September 2009 and titled “Joy.” The band then embarked on a fall tour, taking their music to several US locations.

In February 2010, Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB hit the road for a month-long tour starting with a benefit show in Charlottesville, VA. Cities announced in this trip include Washington DC, Philadelphia PA, Boston MA, Wallingford CT, Red Bank NJ, New York NY, Milwaukee WI, Chicago IL, Minneapolis MN, Kansas City MO, St. Louis MO, Nashville TN, Charlotte NC, Atlanta GA, and Knoxville TN.

Phish enjoys a devoted fan base. They were formed at the University of Vermont in 1983 by Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth (both on guitar), Mike Gordon (bass) and Jon Fishman (drums). They are known for building a following via non mainstream means such as word of mouth and early internet technology, rather than radio and advertising. Their music takes inspiration from many genres, including bluegrass, reggae, rock, jazz and blues.

Rolling Stone magazine has called them “the most important band of the Nineties.” The band is most often compared to the Grateful Dead, and was well known in the 1990s mostly for its live shows where they would perform free-form rock and roll influenced jams. The band broke up August 2004, only to reunite five years later, in the summer of 2009.

This article is about “Musicians inspired by nirvana”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Musicians inspired by nirvana”:

In 1994 musician Kurt Cobain of Nirvana died suddenly from an apparent self inflicted gun shot wound. His death was officially ruled a suicide at this time. However, in the years that followed his death was questioned by media and fans alike. His controversial marriage to singer Courtney Love in 1992 fueled the gossip surrounding his death. Their drug use was public knowledge and Cobain’s use of heroin assisted the singers developing state of depression. After an attempted intervention by Love and several fellow musicians, Cobain’s behavior became erratic and unpredictable.

On April 8th, 1994 Cobains body was found in his home with a shotgun and suicide note nearby. Whether he was actually suicidal has raised questions following his death. Many close to the singer say that he was not suicidal and that any information to the contrary came directly from Love.

The controversy of Cobain’s death began when it was reportedly classified as a suicide at the scene before any review by a qualified medical examiner. Further examination revealed that Cobain had died several days before his body was found. A week prior, Love had hired Los Angeles County detective Tom Grant to try and locate her husband. Cobain had left a treatment facility unannounced and apparently had not been seen since. Grant maintained that Love was being less than truthful with him regarding her husbands disappearance and stated so in interviews and news reports.

When an examination was made of the evidence found near the victim, specifically the shotgun, suicide note and the pen use to write the note investigators were faced with a puzzling question. Why were there no prints left on any of these items if indeed the victim had used them prior to his death?

In addition, in 1998 Mentors bandleader Eldon Hoke was chronicled with saying that he was aware of someone having killed Cobain and that he in fact had been offered $50,000.00 to kill Cobain by Courtney Love. Within days of Hoke’s statement he was killed by a train, never having revealed the supposed killer. Holk’s revelations regarding Cobain’s death and then his own sudden demise increased the mystery. To the public the case appeared to be one frought with cover up and one that demanded a reinvestigation. As to who may have pulled the trigger that ended the singers life, public opinion is divided. Many point towards Love while others maintain he died at his own hand.

Throughout his life Cobain was in and of himself an enigma. Talented yet haunted by his own demons, demons mutiplied by drugs, Cobain was destined to die an untimely death. The mystery as to what really happened to him is one that sells magizines, books, and films. Greatly missed and mourned by numerous fans, it is this that continues to breath life into the controversy of the death of Kurt Cobain.

Nirvana remains an inspiration to musicians and fans across the globe: In the course of popular music, there are few bands who came from more humble …

Nirvana (band) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer … introduced the pair to Chad Channing, and the three musicians … guitar, followed by big, loud hardcore-inspired choruses …

The musical wonders the Foo Fighters might seem a bit out of place in this food-inspired lineup, but the post-grunge rock stars will nevertheless add just the right amount of seasoning for the monumental Thanksgiving episode of the reality … If the Foo Fighters’ signature sound is strikingly similar to that of Nirvana, it is because the band was formed by Dave Grohl, the drummer for Nirvana before the band’s disbandment following lead singer Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994. …

It could be Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit”, Gun’s n’ Roses “Sweet Child of Mine”, Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lot of Love”, The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” but whatever it was you knew that you had never really been alive until you heard that … come across as a forced interview designed to say what genius the musicians are and that if you want to understand pure art you will buy their latest album. This documentary about musicians comes across as three people who are brought …

This article is about “Dorothy Herzka”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Dorothy Herzka”:

If Elvis Presley was the king of Rock and Roll in the post-war America, definitely, Roy Fox Lichtenstein, or simply Roy Lichtenstein was the American king of Pop Art. He was an ordinary man with an extraordinary ability to transform chewing gum wrapper characters into salable art. He was an ordinary artist from an upper middle class family, blessed with an uncanny ability to convert comic strips into a gallery-worthy art.

Born in Pre-World War II America, on October 27, 1923, at Manhattan, New York City, Roy Lichtenstein was a dabbler in many ways. He often resorted to teaching and painting simultaneously to support himself. After finishing his public school in New York, he enrolled for Franklin School for Boys, Manhattan at the age of 12. After graduation, he enrolled with the Art Students League of New York, under the tutelage of the American painter, Reginald Marsh. Roy then migrated from New York to study Fine Arts and a studio course at the Ohio State University. His education here was interrupted, however, for three years (1943-46) during his service in the Army around the World War II. Once back, Lichtenstein joined the graduation program of Ohio State and even occasionally served as an art teacher for the subsequent decade. In 1949, the artist completed his M.F.A. from the Ohio State University, and the same year, he tied knot with Isabel Wilson.

In 1951, Roy Lichtenstein held his first solo exhibition at Carlebach Gallery, New York. The same year, the artist migrated to Cleveland for six years, working sometimes as a window decorator and sometimes as an artisan. During this phase, Lichtenstein’s paintings kept swinging between ‘Cubism’ and ‘Expressionism.’ In 1954, his first son was born, followed by the second in 1956. The artist returned to New York in 1957 and resumed teaching. At this time, ‘Abstract Expressionism’ marked his paintings. In 1958, he joined as a teacher at the State University of New York at Oswego. He started teaching at Rutgers University in 1960, where his romance with Proto-pop Imagery rekindled.

Roy Lichtenstein’s life in itself was unremarkable, almost bordering on the mundane, without any major tragedies or traumas as were associated with many of his calling. Even his skills were not something legendary. What set him apart, however, was his way of taking commercial art and putting it before viewers, as the advertisers wanted them to see. During 1961-65, Roy Lichtenstein indulged in the cartoon oriented Pop Art. He blew up the small boxes of DC comics into large prints, where the use of “Benday Dots,” first time in “Look Mickey (1961),” was distinctly noticeable. The same year (1961), an American art dealer, Leo Castelli, started exhibiting Roy’s works in his New York gallery, followed by the artist’s solo show there in 1962. Fame was Lichtenstein’s from here. Magna paints, thick borders, bold colors, and Benday Dots, became the identities of Roy’s works, such as in “Drowning Girl (1963).” In 1964, the artist took a break from teaching, in order to focus on his artistry. His marriage with Isabel was over in 1965, followed by his remarriage with Dorothy Herzka in 1968.

Alternating between ‘Pop Imagery’ and shameless kitsch promotion, Roy’s blown-up, larger than life “Whaam! (1963)” was an iconic commercial bull in the until date conservative gallery, China Shop. Lichtenstein made every American to no more consider the potential ‘Comic Art’ as lowbrow. He, in fact, made the world understand that the perspective of treating commercial art as “low,” was only indicative of insular thinking, rather than the narrow expression of the art form itself.

During his lifetime, Roy Lichtenstein was hailed as the torchbearer of modern ‘American Symbolism,’ who took art into the mainstream, out of the confines of its rigid high society definition. The artist borrowed heavily from comic strips, super heroes, and commercial icons, but managed to put them into meaningful concepts. His art works did not represent merely enlarged copies, but were also connotative of a different take on the American outlook towards its commercial icons. Roy Lichtenstein is known more for his sense of design, rather than for his sense of beauty. His style, and form of image placement, made the viewers see familiar objects in a new light – a light that made kitsch fashionable and fashion kitsch. During 1970s-80s, Roy started producing the sequels of his earlier works, such as “Artist’s Studio, Look Mickey (1973).” ‘Surrealism’ started reflecting in his works by late 1970s, such as in “Pow Wow (1979).”

His iconic sculptures, like “Head (1992),” screen prints, and the cover design for Universal Studios made him the undisputed king of the commercial art. Lichtenstein’s renditions made him the darling of the art galleries. On September 29, 1997, he succumbed to pneumonia, at Manhattan, New York City. Despite the lack of brilliance of an accomplished artist, Roy Lichtenstein will always be known as the icon, who made commercial art, avant-garde, a man turned comic books as fashionable as the Mona Lisa is.

This article is about “Half off dining ct”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Half off dining ct”:

Connecticut is known for the abundance of fresh seafood. The seafood can be fairly inexpensive, if you know where to look. You can visit lobster wholesalers and get fresh lobsters “right off the boat” at below market price.

One of my favorite places to visit is Ford’s Lobsters located in Noank. Actually a wonderful shot of Ford’s is featured in the movie Mystic Pizza, with Julia Roberts.

Mystic is just a few minutes away.

If you don’t want to cook the lobsters yourself, you can visit Abbot’s, just a few blocks down the road. Abbot’s offers incredible seafood. Make sure you order a lobster roll, which is a hotdog bun filled with fresh hot lobster served with melted butter.

My love affair with clams started before I could talk. I love clams in every way: raw clams on the half shell, clams in chowder, stuffed clams, clam fritters but my favorite is fried clams. Now these are not strip clams mind you, these are whole clams fried up with the “bellies” on them.

Clams come in several different varieties. The lager hardshell clams, or quahogs are used for chowder. Some of these shells were made into beads by the local Indians. This was called wampum and was used as money. Generally, the quahog is what is used as a topping for pizza.

Smaller hardshell clams are known as cherrystones or little necks. These clams can be eaten right out of the shell raw with a little lemon or cocktail sauce. My brothers and I have spent countless hours with clam rakes harvesting this tasty fruit of the sea. (We always got our clam permits first. We did not want to get in any trouble with the Clam Commissioner!)

Fried clams are different than quahogs or cherrystones, however. Most people do not even know what fried clams are. They are made from softshell clams. Generally these clams are eaten steamed and are known as steamers. Steamers can be served with a bowl of clam broth and melted butter. You pull off the covering of the clam’s foot, wash the clam in some broth and then dip in melted butter.

Fried clams are made from deep fried softshell clams, with the “bellies on them”. If you ever get a chance to go to the coast of New England, go to a local clam shack and order up a plate of fried clams! You will not be disappointed.

Here is a list of my favorite clam shacks in Southeastern Connecticut. In Mystic, I like The Cove and the Sea Swirl. In Noank, I like Abbot’s sister store, called, (what else) Costello’s. In New London, I like Captain Scott’s, which is hard to find but located right on the water. In East Lyme, I enjoy Dad’s. Moving down the coast to Saybrook, I really like Johnny Ad’s. We also spent quite a bit of time this summer at, Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale located in Madison.

Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale, deserve a special mention, here. First, their seafood is fresh and top notch. Second they have have a “flying” carousel or merry-go-round. Every cent collected from the carousel rides is donated to charity. Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale really gives back to the local community. As you can imagine, Kamalei, rode the carousel numerous times. You can watch a video of Lenny and joes’ here:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/video/17024/lenny_and_joes_fish_tale_madison_connecticut.html?cat=22

So the next time you find yourself on the New England coast: you gotta try the fried clams!

This article is about “Piano chords chart the climb”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Piano chords chart the climb”:

Ragtime is a style that developed from the roughest of neighborhoods and was originally performed in brothels. A precursor to jazz, it is enjoying a resurgence in popularity today. There are quite a few famous ragtime pianists, though many of the originators of the genre died before audio recording was widely available.

Though not famous purely for his piano playing, Scott Joplin remains the most influential ragtime composer. Joplin wrote the first instrumental (“Maple Leaf Rag”) to sell over one million copies. Though he never recorded a note, famous friends bore witness to his skills, saying that he played slowly but with perfect execution.

Joplin created several piano rolls for companies, some of which survive today. Unfortunately, the illness that eventually killed him also caused his later playing to suffer, which is why there is debate as to his technical skill. Still, Joplin’s mastery of ragtime composition laid the groundwork upon which later pianists would embellish.

Another ragtime composer noted for his piano skills was Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton. Beginning his training at a young age in a local brothel, Morton developed both great technical skills and a rather infamous ego. He brought the techniques he had learned from playing ragtime piano to Chicago, where he wrote the first jazz song, “Jelly Roll Blues.” Morton brought traditions from New Orleans to the rest of the world and turned piano playing, and music in general, completely upside down.

Eubie Blake was yet another practitioner of the style, though he incorporated other musical genres into his playing. As a boy of four or five, he climbed onto an organ bench while shopping with his mother. Blake started fooling around with the instrument, causing the store owner to proclaim him a genius. His parents bought a pump organ, and he received lessons from his neighbor. He also played in a bordello before moving on to play in proper bands.

Blake composed the song Charleston Rag, which became a huge crossover hit. He went on to write one of the first Broadway musicals written and directed by African Americans.

Sometimes referred to as New York Ragtime, stride piano developed from traditional styles into its own form of playing. Developed during World War I by Luckey Roberts and James Johnson, it relies heavily on the left hand playing a bass line and the right hand playing chords on alternating beats. Though it is often related more to jazz playing, stride was given birth through ragtime.

Modern pianists continue to keep ragtime in the public eye. Butch Thompson was an integral part of A Prairie Home Companion between 1974 and 1986, serving as both the house pianist and band leader. Thompson began playing at the age of three, taking up lessons a few years later. After playing the clarinet in high school, he went to college and joined a local jazz group. After this, he traveled to New Orleans to learn from the masters of jazz and ragtime. He currently tours the world and hosts a jazz program on the radio in Minneapolis.

Among the numerous thousands of things sold are automobiles along with other automobiles of each and every imaginable make and model. Actually, tens of thousands of motor vehicles are sold by the federal government at public auctions throughout the country just about every year.

How can there be so many vehicles for sale? Simply because the government is so enormous that it is challenging to even comprehend just how significantly asset is amassed for resale. The truth is, the govt seizes, confiscates and forecloses on residence that results in numerous millions of pieces of asset just about every year, and that number continues to grow.

Incredibly, the administration isn’t a private company that is certainly interested in creating a profit on the items it sells.
Securing Licenses and Permits

City, county, state and/or federal licenses or permits are often needed before entering a particular organization or assistance operation. Often these are issued solely being a fund-raising measure, and therefore, are easy to obtain by submitting a fee.

Within the other hand, licensing is also used as a method of regulating the competency of those entering a particular field and to protect the public from shady operators. In some instances an exam is administered, and moral and financial requirements may well will need to be met as well.

From the used-car business enterprise, most states require that you obtain a dealer’s license if you’re buying and selling vehicles for the purpose of generating a profit. However, you might be not required to apply for a license when you only make an isolated or occasional sale. You are not considered to be within the business of selling motor motor vehicles in that event. “Isolated or occasional sales” in many states means the sale, purchase, or lease of not much more than five motor motor vehicles in a 12-month period.

Once you began to offer additional vehicles for profit that’s allowed by your state law on an annual basis, you should apply for a Dealer’s License by contacting your state department of public safety of department of motor car.

Check with your attorney or other city officials to determine what licenses and permits are necessary. Basically begin up a company without having having the proper authorizations can result in severe penalties, and you could be forced to discontinue operations.

Numerous states and some cities and counties require that income taxes be collected. The state sales tax permit is readily available from the State Department of Revenue. City and county permits are readily available from the tax department in those jurisdictions.

Even though a particular amount of “red-tape” must be tolerated to obtain some licenses and permits, this is usually a one-time occurrence. Then, it is just a matter of submitting an annual renewal fee.

The world changed dramatically during the second half of the Twentieth Century, as the United States became the most powerful nation both politically and culturally. One American phenomenon that has left its mark in all corners of the world is pop music. Here is my list of the most important pop songs of the Twentieth Century, in chronological order. Perhaps they were not the first, the best or the most original, but they were the right thing at the right time, and they changed history.

1. “Rock Around the Clock,” (1954). Bill Haley and the Comets. In the early years of Rock music, the inclusion of this song would be a no brainer. It was the first great Rock and Roll hit, selling 25 million copies. Nowadays, we may have a desire to right the record, and say that black performers like Big Joe Turner, Bo Diddley and Ike Turner were the real originators of the style, but the fact is that in the segregated atmosphere of that time, it was necessary for a talented white group to champion the music to a larger audience. The Comets were able to rise to the occasion.

2. “Only You,” (1955). The Platters. They became the personification of the emerging doo-wop style which was a blend of rock and roll combos and vocal styling that can be traced back to the Ink Spots and other performers of the Big Band era. Doo-wop was first successfully introduced by the Penguins a year earlier, with “Earth Angel,” but it was The Platters, a classy act from the West Coast that really established the genre. Their many hits, such as “The Great Pretender” and “My Prayer,” served as a standard of quality for other groups to strive for. With its popularity in the multi-ethnic society of the Northeast, doo-wop was the first racially integrated style, and it still has a devoted following to this day, thanks to the many brilliant vocal performances.

3. “Hound Dog,” (1956). Elvis Presley. In that year Elvis exploded on the scene with this hit, plus “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Heartbreak Hotel” and others. He was revolutionary in the McCarthy era age of conformity. The influence of Elvis Presley cannot be underestimated: he introduced national audiences to rockabilly music, white audiences to black rock and roll and his on-stage persona made venues accessible for the even more flamboyant acts like Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. He created the Rock and roll version of the teen idol, updating the image from Frank Sinatra’s time.

4. “La Bamba,” (1958). Ritchie Valens. This song is important on two counts: it brought the Spanish language and Mexican tradition into the mainstream of Rock music. The opening phrase, “Para bailar la Bamba,” sounds like an historic cry, “un grito.” It is also important because it launched the fad of dance songs that conceived of dance as an expression of the inner self, rather than a dating ritual. “In order to dance the Bamba, you have to have a touch of grace,” and listeners began to see dancing in a new light, as communication with their own bodies.

5. “Shop Around,” (1960). Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. A perfectly crafted blend of doo-wop vocals and driving rock and roll beats, this is the recording that launched Motown. The Shirelles, a New York “girl group” had scored a hit a few months earlier with “Dedicated to the One I Love,” (1959), thus establishing the genre. The Shirelles were trailblazers, building on the success of the earlier doo-wop oriented Chantels and leading to many other girl groups, but it was Motown that became the spiritual home of this new musical style that eventually came to be called “soul music,” and so the Motown recording is the one that made history. Motown was one of the richest veins of pop music of this entire period, culminating in the landmark recording, “Papa was a Rollin’ Stone,” (1972) by the Temptations. By that point the cultural revolution that was the 1960s had transformed the Motown sound into something completely different.

6. “At Last,” (1961). Etta James. Mixed the styles of raucous R and B, Rock and roll and the female slow groove. She did not have the jazz cachet of her contemporary Dinah Washington, instead she represented a new, rebellious era of earthy hedonism. She opened the way for the acceptance of other iconoclastic female performers like Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin (with her distinctive version of “Summertime”). It proved to be fertile ground for male singers, as well, notably, Percy Sledge with “When a Man Loves a Woman,” (1969).

7. “She Loves You,” (1963). The Beatles. Though not an American group, they had an enormous influence on the history of American music and the pop culture of the 1960s. “I Wanna Hold your Hand” was their first U.S. hit in January, 1964, and was followed almost immediately by this song. The two songs taken together illustrate the innovative quality of the Beatles in terms of melody, song structure and vocal harmonic style. “She Loves You,” however, was the more iconic of the two, with its “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” refrain that came to symbolize this genre. The British Invasion that followed changed music history.

8. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” (1965). The Rolling Stones. The Beatles were soon followed across the Atlantic by their bizarro-world evil twins, the Rolling Stones. If the Beatles had little halos, the Stones had horns. Their spirit of rebelliousness would find fertile ground in the atmosphere of the 1960s. They stayed true to their heavy guitar based genre, even as the Beatles became more cerebral and psychedelic. The Rolling Stones can be seen as the fathers of Heavy Metal, and through their influence on groups like the Velvet Underground, the spiritual fathers of Alternative Rock.

9. “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” (1965). Bob Dylan. As a singer of protest songs, Bob Dylan had been one of the leading performers of the early 1960s folk movement. His move to “folk rock” in 1965 was shocking to his fan base, and when he appeared on stage at the Newport Folk Festival with an electric guitar, he was vigorously booed, in one of the most famous incidents of the period. This song was revolutionary not only for its innovative blend of musical styles, but also for its new use of language. The intensity of imagery was something that had never been heard before in pop music and would not be equaled again until Grand Master Flash and “The Message” of 1982. (See below).

10. “White Rabbit” (1967). Jefferson Airplane. This was their second hit song to come out of the album “Surrealistic Pillow,” after “Don’t You Want Somebody to Love.” “White Rabbit” really exemplified the West Coast psychedelic style of the 1967 Summer of Love, with its surrealistic lyrics and mindblowing crescendo. Grace Slick single handedly invented the concept of the powerhouse rocker female. Other important West Coast groups at this time were the Doors with “Light My Fire,” and the Byrds, with their cover of Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Anybody going to San Francisco?

11. “Hey, Joe,” (1967). Jimi Hendrix. Working mainly in New York and London, he represents the Atlantic variant of the psychedelic rock scene. His guitar work and his performance style made him a trailblazer of that period, along with the Who and Cream. He is a giant of pop music history because he bridged black and white musical styles so successfully, and with his creativity helped to launch both the Heavy Metal style and the Funk style of the 1970s.

12. “Respect” (1968). Aretha Franklin. With the overwhelming impact of the British Invasion and the psychedelic styles, soul music had lost its luster as a vanguard form of pop music. Aretha changed that with her infusion of gospel and driving rhythms to the old formulas of Motown music, bringing the music back to its African-American roots. Respect is a perfectly appropriate title for this achievement, because suddenly the centrality of black music to the creative spirit of American pop music became indisputable.

13. “Living for the City,” (1973). Stevie Wonder. Profoundly significant both from a musical and a social perspective. The use of synthesizers and the spoken interlude in the song gave it an innovative structure. The social commentary and spoken dialog led the way for the development of rap music later in the decade.

14. “I Will Survive,” (1978). Gloria Gaynor. It is the anthem of the disco mania of the 1970s. Previous disco hits had been “The Hustle,” (1975) by Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony, and “Tangerine,” (1976) by Salsoul Orchestra. These instrumentals allowed dancers to focus on the rhythms and steps as they learned the new dance crazes of the period, be they partner dances, like the Latin Hustle, or line dances like the Bus Stop. The 1977 film, “Saturday Night Fever” included songs with vocal parts by the BeeGees (Stayin’ Alive) and the Trammps, “Disco Inferno.” However, the lyrics to these songs were always secondary and usually barely intelligible. With the soaring vocal performance of Gloria Gaynor on this song, and the message in the lyrics, the hustle finally found its voice and came alive.

15. “Rapper’s Delight,” (1979). Sugar Hill Gang. This song marked the beginning of rap music. It is a moment of pop music history every bit as significant as anything done by Elvis or the Beatles. The rap style was soon perfected and packaged by other groups, notably Run-DMC, and went on to permeate Western pop music in the following decades.

16. “The Message” (1982). Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. By infusing their verses with such powerful social commentary, they demonstrated the immense power of the rap style. The syncopated line of monosyllables, “Don’t push me ’cause I’m close to the edge, I’m try-in’ not to lose my head,” was unprecedented, and the little laugh that followed it was truly haunting. With their virtuoso command of language, they did for rap music what Bob Dylan did for folk rock. The form was brought to complete commercial fruition 13 years later with Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise,” (1995).

17. “Thriller,” (1982). Michael Jackson. A huge event. Musically, it was a synthesis of many styles that came before: funk, rock, r n b, disco, novelty song, but it was so much more than its parts, as it seamlessly fused these styles together. It was also the prototypical music video, a visual accomplishment that has never been duplicated. The album is the best selling album of all time.

18. “Like a Virgin,” (1984). Madonna. Both she and Cyndi Lauper crashed onto the music scene at the same time in 1983, as the first female performers to create every aspect of their onstage personas and to present themselves as performance artists rather than simply artists who perform. However, Lauper’s style remained idiosyncratic and inimitable, but Madonna’s style became a genre. She created the sexy, leggy female pop idol, in the tradition of male performers like Michael Jackson and Prince, and she was followed by an endless string of other women, some imitators, some artists in their own right.

19. “Conga,” (1985). Miami Sound Machine. It introduced English speaking music lovers to the Caribbean Hispanic style that had been percolating on the East coast for the previous two decades. Gloria Estefan’s clipped phrasing even gave the English lyrics a Spanish feeling. She matched or even surpassed this achievement with “Oye Mi Canto” in 1989. World Music and Latin fusion are concepts that began to take their present form here.

20. “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” (1991). Nirvana. The grunge style of the 1990s got its most iconic performance in this. Kurt Cobain’s stage persona and aesthetics have influenced all the alternative rock singers that have come after him, giving them an alternative to the fake cockney whines that had dominated before. The members of Nirvana were particularly articulate through their music and artistic statements, thus codifying the characteristics of this new style.

This is a list of twenty very different and unique songs, but there are certain characteristics. One striking thing is the low number of women on this list (six, including Grace Slick and Gloria Estefan). It seems that women have had a hard time being seen as innovators and being given the opportunity to take a lead role. An example of this double standard can be seen in the way that Mick Jagger, with his middle class British background from the opposite end of the English speaking world, never faced serious questioning about his embracing of black performance and musical styles, but Janis Joplin, born and raised in the Deep South, was criticized as being derivative or worse, and her reputation suffered for many years because of this. A clear division of styles along racial lines is, in fact, one of the most persistent traits of pop music even to this day. However, if such divides are normally seen as polarizing and undesirable elsewhere, that is not necessarily the case in pop music.

Here, they have created the terrain for multi-faceted and rich traditions that thrive on cross-pollination, and when we allow performers to bridge these gaps with their creativity, we get some of the greatest performers, such as Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix. As American pop music has grown in complexity, the opportunities have emerged for more productive mixtures, but the innovative spirit seems to have hit a dry patch. It remains to be seen where the next great song will come from; it’s been a long time coming.
