Through my own work in Nursing Homes throughout the years, I can assure you that sexuality is indeed one of the last things to go, and many people who work in Nursing Homes will tell you that in terms of sexuality these places are often more like college dormitories than hospitals. Much like is probably true for Junior Highs, dating events, nightclubs, and any other places people go to meet one another, humor is the catalyst that often brings people together.

On a personal note to emphasize this idea, my grandfather Hank just passed away at the age of 90. He was one of the funniest men I ever knew, and his outlook on life helped instill in me a lighthearted template for life which I hope I will always be able to remember. He was married to my grandmother Lee for 67 years, and I have no doubt that the humor and laughter between them was one of the best reasons they were able to reach their Golden wedding anniversary and much, much more. A person could fill their home with books on maintaining relationships, but not find a simpler recipe for marital success than being able to consistently laugh at life’s little moments together. This was the secret of my grandparent’s success, and a lesson I hope I’ll continue to remember.

The classification of an open relationship implies that two people have a core commitment with each other with a loop-hole that allows each party to see other people with some rules associated with these relationships. The first thing that comes to mind for most people is the thought of threesomes or orgies, but many of these open relationships may not go to such extremes. According to an article written by Russell Goldman on August 10, 2007 titled, “Are Open Marriages More Successful Than Traditional Couplings?” an image of the stereotypical 70′s swingers scene is depicted in contrast to the modern era of open relationships. The goal today for many involved in this sort of relationship is to foster and promote acceptance of this life-style that strays from the traditions of monogamy.

The question about whether these arrangements work or whether they are best served remaining in the social under-belly of society is the question. Finding hard statistics may be hard to find because most people rarely volunteer to discuss their personal activities in the bedroom. However one thing is for sure, this life-style continues to be reflected in the television programs and movies, so it can be assumed that this practice does continue to thrive. Online these communities flourish as couples exchange ideas and partners regularly.

Now, these relationships are varied in scope due to the tolerances of the parties involved. Most often dormant fantasies may motivate such aspirations among seasoned couples that have remained monogamous throughout their marriage or relationships. A common fantasy fulfillment practice associated with open relationships is the practice of interracial dating among established couples. There are numerous personal ads and web sites dedicated to couples seeking men and women of certain ethnic groups for external relationships.

Fair (1978) established that the premise for infidelity has more to do with routine fatigue in relationships and therefore an open relationship may be a viable alternative for couples. The main difference between an extramarital affair and an open relationship is that in the affair one of the other parties is not aware of his or her participation. The open relationship is more of a mutual arrangement between the parties involved to either share intimate experiences together with another party, couple or group.

The implications are that in an open relationship the two parties may consult on the gender of the third party, age, ethnicity, and in some cases the requirements for this individual. This same practice holds true for those seeking other couples. In the minds of many of the participants it is not classified as cheating or committing acts of infidelity, but a sense of sharing their inner-most thoughts and desires.

The trend for bisexuality expanded in Generation Y as a continued rise from Generation X and with this rise several factors came into play. The definition and structure of the family changed and with this change came tolerances that accepts same-sex couples and bisexuality. This is nothing new because in ancient Roman and Greece these practices were exercised according to historical findings from that era. Caligula is said to have had multiple sexual encounters with the wives of his court and critiqued their performance in the presence of their spouses.

This enhancement of the open relationship that exists today is based on hedonism and the concern with self fulfillment as witnessed during the era of entitlement that United States experienced during the economic boom. In some cases women used unconventional methods to satisfy their partner’s sexual needs that steered clear from the traditional fears of unwanted pregnancy. Technology brought the bedroom to the social networking discussion rooms and couples found it easier to disclose their desires in personal profiles that openly state their sexual preferences. The difficulty associated with managing an open relationship is endless despite the assurances of the parties involved.

The introduction of another party exposes the couple to potential sexually-transmitted-diseases (STD), managing another independent personality, enforcing rules associated with the conduct and behavior in dealing with that person or persons, and ensuring that the core couple remains in-tact.

In the case of two parties getting together with full knowledge that another person or other persons may be involved in the relationship may have a better chance of sustaining it for a longer period of time. Occasionally, married or monogamous couples may care to experiment with other parties and the danger is that one member may find the other party or parties more interesting that their primary love interest. Usually, the person within the relationship that suggests the introduction of another party is the person that has routine fatigue. Husbands and spouses may give anniversary and birthday gifts in the form of a romp with a fantasy girl or guy. Other couples may specifically look for a single or couple to become a permanent fixture in their relationship.

It is not uncommon for couples to encounter problems if another party becomes too romantically involved with one or both of the parties in a lover’s triangle of sorts. The risk in open relationships is that the two parties know what they are capable of doing, but the other party or parties remain the third -wheel. Another approach is for the couple to have private lives away from each other while treating the home as neutral ground meaning that they can do it in the streets, but not bring it home. We see this a lot with women in denial about the cheating husband that would rather keep the standard of living in exchange for ignoring that he is not home with her and kids.

Jealousy is an emotion that has to be managed constantly, especially if the female partner is not as physically attractive as the other female member. Some women try to manage the interaction with her primary love interest by having intimate relations with the woman, not because she is bisexual or a lesbian, but to keep her man. Guys may run into this same issue when a partner fulfills his woman’s sexual desires more thoroughly. The guy may implement certain rules during encounters that limits the third party’s ability to find comfort with her.

These are just some of the complexities associated with dealing with an open relationship others include the possibility of pregnancy, a partner leaving for another party, the risk of ruining a professional or social reputation, and the constant weight on the marriage as a whole with other people involved.

The theory that it is only sex or “fun” as swingers commonly refer to this practice can easily be a facade that drapes other unresolved issues in the relationship. There still remain few people will to endure their spouse or partner being intimate with another party while doing the same. The question comes to mind is that maybe the primary couple should find someone else instead of maintain a facade of a relationship for cosmetic purposes. In the end Fair (1978) may be correct in that these two people may be bored with each other and therefore an external party has to stimulate something that has apparently died.

In his book “The Bridge Across Forever,” Richard Bach asks the question,

“Have you ever felt alone in a world of strangers, missing someone you have never met?”

The book goes on to describe his search for a partner in life, what he calls a “soul mate.”

I believe that all of us have a profound desire to find someone with whom to have a deep and abiding, intimate relationship.

This search springs from a longing inside each of us to find completion and wholeness with another person.

We fear what I we want most

Let’s take a look at some of the obstacles to finding this kind of relationship.

Fear of intimacy

We human beings are fairly complicated. Many people deeply fear the very thing they most want. Striking a healthy balance between a fear of and a desire for an intimate relationship can be very difficult. When a fear of intimacy takes over, people can become experts at relationship sabotage.

Faulty relationship radar. Some people continually make the same poor choices of partner. It’s as if each of us had an “internal radar” that picks up “our kind” of person.

Whether your radar scans for healthy or unhealthy choices depends on how it is set. How your internal radar, is set depends on three factors:

1) your self-esteem,

2) the model of relationships set by the family in which you grew up and

3) your own relationship experience.

Movies, literature and music have given us the notion that “somewhere out there” is the one perfect person for each of us. I’ll probably get some letters about this, but I don’t think this matches reality. If you just look around, you’ll notice that many “perfect matches” are divorced within a few years.

In one episode of the 1-V show “M•A•S•H” is a scene in which Hawkeye and Margaret are sitting at a bar commiserating about their relationships, which have just ended. One says to the other, “Our problem is that we keep looking I for a perfect, tailored fit in an offthe-rack world.”.

This is where a great many people get stuck. It’s my belief that in fact there are many people out there who have the potential to be a “good fit” as a soul mate.

Chain relationships. In much the same way that chain smokers will smoke one cigarette after another, some people move out of one relationship and then immediately into another’. These people are typically running from something and have very little knowledge or sense of self when they are not in, relationships.

Concentrate on yourself

Now that we have looked at a few of the obstacles to finding a soul mate, let’s consider a few tips that might aid in the search.

Becoming the right person vs. looking for the right person This means at least two things:

1) developing yourself to the point that you become eligible to be someone’s right person and

2) adjusting your own relationship radar so that you bring yourself into contact with suitable potential partners.

The truth of this has been borne out in my interviews with hundreds of couples. When I ask the question “How did you two find each other?” countless people say that, when they stopped looking and focused on something else in their lives, their current partners just showed up.

It’s an interesting paradox – finding by not looking.

Know what you are looking for

I was on a radio program recently when a man phoned in to say that going to singles meetings looking for a partner is like going to a used-car lot to find a nice car. I bet he gets lots of dates.

That aside, a different car analogy is useful here. When we go shopping for a car, we usually have a mental list of things we must have in a car as well as things we would like to have. Sometimes, we find one with many things we would like to have, but without one of the must-haves. It would still drive OK, but it’s just not for us.

Looking for a soul mate, it’s important to know what you would like to have and what you must have. That’s a list worth developing.

In his book “The Bridge Across Forever,” Richard Bach asks the question,

“Have you ever felt alone in a world of strangers, missing someone you have never met?”

The book goes on to describe his search for a partner in life, what he calls a “soul mate.”

I believe that all of us have a profound desire to find someone with whom to have a deep and abiding, intimate relationship.

This search springs from a longing inside each of us to find completion and wholeness with another person.

We fear what I we want most

Let’s take a look at some of the obstacles to finding this kind of relationship.

Fear of intimacy

We human beings are fairly complicated. Many people deeply fear the very thing they most want. Striking a healthy balance between a fear of and a desire for an intimate relationship can be very difficult. When a fear of intimacy takes over, people can become experts at relationship sabotage.

Faulty relationship radar. Some people continually make the same poor choices of partner. It’s as if each of us had an “internal radar” that picks up “our kind” of person.

Whether your radar scans for healthy or unhealthy choices depends on how it is set. How your internal radar, is set depends on three factors:

1) your self-esteem,

2) the model of relationships set by the family in which you grew up and

3) your own relationship experience.

Movies, literature and music have given us the notion that “somewhere out there” is the one perfect person for each of us. I’ll probably get some letters about this, but I don’t think this matches reality. If you just look around, you’ll notice that many “perfect matches” are divorced within a few years.

In one episode of the 1-V show “M•A•S•H” is a scene in which Hawkeye and Margaret are sitting at a bar commiserating about their relationships, which have just ended. One says to the other, “Our problem is that we keep looking I for a perfect, tailored fit in an offthe-rack world.”.

This is where a great many people get stuck. It’s my belief that in fact there are many people out there who have the potential to be a “good fit” as a soul mate.

Chain relationships. In much the same way that chain smokers will smoke one cigarette after another, some people move out of one relationship and then immediately into another’. These people are typically running from something and have very little knowledge or sense of self when they are not in, relationships.

Concentrate on yourself

Now that we have looked at a few of the obstacles to finding a soul mate, let’s consider a few tips that might aid in the search.

Becoming the right person vs. looking for the right person This means at least two things:

1) developing yourself to the point that you become eligible to be someone’s right person and

2) adjusting your own relationship radar so that you bring yourself into contact with suitable potential partners.

The truth of this has been borne out in my interviews with hundreds of couples. When I ask the question “How did you two find each other?” countless people say that, when they stopped looking and focused on something else in their lives, their current partners just showed up.

It’s an interesting paradox – finding by not looking.

Know what you are looking for

I was on a radio program recently when a man phoned in to say that going to singles meetings looking for a partner is like going to a used-car lot to find a nice car. I bet he gets lots of dates.

That aside, a different car analogy is useful here. When we go shopping for a car, we usually have a mental list of things we must have in a car as well as things we would like to have. Sometimes, we find one with many things we would like to have, but without one of the must-haves. It would still drive OK, but it’s just not for us.

Looking for a soul mate, it’s important to know what you would like to have and what you must have. That’s a list worth developing.
