The Guitar Lessons I wished I had…

Now that I have enjoyed playing guitar for over 4 decades it might seem a bit much to voice any regrets. But I really could have done better with a better instructor. I’m putting out a message to beginning guitarists to take a moment to evaluate their course of learning.

Here is some advice, free gratis. Many methods of instruction tend to overload and overwhelm the beginner. Two dozen chords or more plus a dozen songs to learn, all within the first six months can be ovewhelming, not to mention disheartening. These days with online learning you can learn at your own pace, go over finger positions as often as you want and just avoid being rushed.

My suggestion is to start with just 2 easy chords and learn them perfectly. Get the proper rhythm going for just one song, instead of trying to manage many different beats demanded by as many different songs. The first year of guitar is so crucial, that to complete it with only a handful of songs learned well may become key to going on to become a rock star.

There are thousands of good songs that require a maximum of 5 to 6 chords to play. If you have not played with a capo, I strongly suggest this convenient gizmo. It makes the guitar sound better, with clear bell tones. It makes playing the guitar easier, because the clamping effect of the capo pulls the strings a bit closer to the fretboard. Your fingers don’t have to press down as far or as hard in order to produce a nice clear chord. A good capo will cost about $20 to $30 but you will feel and hear the difference right away! The cheaper capos use elastic but usually fail to put a tight hold on all 6 strings.

Your finger pain should decrease, another benefit of using a strong capo. Those of you who have played guitar for at least a year will probably have learned these two easy chords. The F Major 7th chord requires only three fingers and the C Major 7th chord only needs two fingers. They are also right beside each other so this makes it simple to alternate strumming these two chords.

One very famous song, ‘Horse with No Name’, can be played entirely using only these two chords! Add D Minor 7th chord and you can play ‘September’. Add D Minor chord and the G Major chord and you can play ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Wonderful World’.

The point is, if you practise and nail these 4 songs perfectly in just 4 months, you will sound semi-pro very fast!

You will hear the subtle difference between the verse and chorus. The great thing about using the capo up the neck is that you can see BOTH of your hands and correct either your strumming or chording or both very quickly.

It is good to stand up and shake your hands about every hour to avoid muscle cramps. I forgot to do this the other day and my hands almost seized up! By the way, make sure your capo is positioned in the middle of the fret to allow some space for the heel of your hand.

As I said in the introduction, I wish a guitar veteran could have been there to coach me better, but I had to learn the hard way after many years. If you are new to the guitar I wish you well and I hope these suggestions are helpful to you.

To summarize my keep-it-so-simple method: use only 5 or 6 chords for the first 6 months, work on 4 or 5 songs at the most and use a capo. I do hope you continue playing guitar and I hope these suggestions will speed your progress!

There are a variety of airlines that accept pets either in the cargo or even in the cabin so we are going to consider here which of those airlines are the best airlines for pets. Remember, pets include birds, rabbits, kittens, hamsters, or guinea pigs, but these pets do have additional restrictions.

United Airlines — The United Airlines pet policy is that they do allow pets in the baggage and cargo areas as well as in the cabin. Some short-nosed breeds of dogs are not allowed as checked baggage or as cargo during the summer months which are from June 1 through September 30. The breeds referred to are Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier, English Bull dog, French Bull dog, Lhasa Apso, Boxer, King Charles Spaniel, Pug, etc. Heat is a factor here. This does not affect the transportation of pets in the cabin. So United Airlines can definitely be considered one of the best airlines for pets.

Northwest Airlines — The Northwest Airline pet policy is that they are accepted in the cabin on all U. S. flights except to Hawaii. They are accepted in some international flights but the airline must be contacted regarding this. Pets are also allowed in the checked baggage and cargo compartments. Northwest airlines boasts to be the industry leader for pet transportation in a safe and efficient manner. So the three options that Northwest Airlines offers for pet transportation are — Cargo Shipments (with passenger or traveling alone); Carry-on pets; pets traveling with checked luggage. Northwest Airlines is one of the best airlines for pets.

Delta Airlines — Delta Airline pet policy is that they accept pets in the cabin, in the checked baggage, and in the cargo compartment. There are restrictions as to what type of pet is allowed in the cabin. They are dogs, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, and cats. The animals that are prohibited include mice/rats, sugar gliders, spiders, pot-bellied pigs, frogs, or reptiles. Delta Airlines boasts safety and comfort for the pet but do have some guidelines for the size, etc of the pets. The pet(s) must fit in a carry-on kennel that fits under the seat in front or the seat the passenger is sitting on. The pet will not be able to travel in the cabin if the flight is going to Hawaii. Lastly the pet must be at least 8 weeks old.

American Airlines — The American Airlines pet policy is that pets are accepted in the cabin and as checked baggage. No more that 7 pets can be booked on one flight in the cabin so it is important to advise the airline ahead of time of the transport of a pet. However, checked pets do not need a reservation. Cats and dogs are the limit of pets that are permitted on the American Airlines.

The best airlines for pets are the four listed above determined by the breath of the policy for the transported pets such as in the cabin, cargo, or checked baggage.

The mall: I would stay away from the store clerks, unless these women flirt with you first. That being said, there are tons of gorgeous women at every mall. Be prepared with some group tactics, as most women shop with a partner or two. Where to pick up women in the mall? The food court is a good place to start. The point is that beautiful women are everywhere at the mall.

Ask a woman what she knows about whichever art piece you approach her at. Even if she has only read the description, she’ll tell you what she knows. If she is educated on the piece, ask her to explain it to you.
