That is an interesting question you have asked and invited me to address. OK – this is what I do but it may not work for you. Then again, it may!

In my hand luggage there is a very simple “Reporter’s Notebook” in which I jot down everything I can. It may never be used but if it is needed when I return to Scotland the factual information is there.

I jot down every possible detail – when I leave – were flights on time – and how was the flight? Who met me at Nairobi Airport and what was the weather like and what did I see and observe as I was being driven to my base.

Was I tired? Did I settle in easily? Did I manage to have some sleep after the overnight flight from London?

But I know I will have to speak and write on this when I finally get home, so I include phrases which come to mind, or the possible title for an article. These will not remain in your mind, but they will still be there in your notebook three or four weeks later, and your notes will keep you to the facts. that is important too.

I was in Kenya to teach at Christian Pastors and Leaders Conferences and Seminars. How was I driven to the Church? Who and how many were present? If there was a torrential shower was there a hole in the roof and did they have to move the white plastic chairs? All this is written down.

What were the themes and topics at each Conference or Seminar? What type of questions were raised by those attending? My people at home will want to know all this type of thing.

Visiting slums orphanages and prisons all have their own unique descriptive language. What were the emotions? How did you feel. Were there tears? If yes, why were you weeping?

The cost of items you see in the shops and was what you required in that particular supermarket? You may not be back there but someone else in your hometown may be visiting next year and you can share all this important information.

Now, I have written about my recent three weeks in Nairobi, Kisumu and Bungoma and have described the various experiences and emotions as the days went by.

Jot it all down. Five prisoners in Kibos prison gave their testimony as to how they came to real genuine faith in Jesus Christ and as they spoke I wrote as quickly as I could, and then emailed this crucial day back to Scotland later that evening.

In a second jotter I am starting to prepare talks and articles for when I return. I would arrive back in Scotland on a Saturday and I will have to speak on the Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Now that could be frightening! But if it is all there in rough outline it makes it so much easier to polish it up and tidy the presentation.

How much did I write this time? I have some 50 pages of notes with a further 20 pages of re-written material. And some material has already been emailed home.

I have been home five days and I have re-written all my notes and I have written the various articles for newspapers and newsletters which people request. And, yes, I have spoken on these four occasions.

Does all this sound too simple? No it is is not. It simply means disciplining yourself to get down in black and white what you need you will want to remember or refer to in a week or in a months time.
